Coming soon, for a limited time only, plan "H" (well I used up the rest of the letters!)

Everyone needs a third race car...

That was supposed to be mine. But you stole it from under me. :knock: :p

So it came home today, a 1981 Honda Accord, mechanically standard but came with rally tyres, a full roll cage, Cobra seats and a harness. More spares arriving tomorrow, but the ones I already have include 6 wheels, full exhaust with extractors, 32/36 weber and adapter, reground cam and 2 radiators.

With some assistance from friends including Gaz914, it got an oil and filter change, coolant flush, new plugs and leads, new battery brake fluid flush and a quick clean. It got some bling in the form of a new gearknob and a radiator cap with temperature guage.

Had a minor issue with clutch adjustment and the exhaust hits stuf, but that is not going to stop it from being raced at Hampton next weekend!

List of things to do before Hampton...

Fit drivers seat with rails for the different driver heights
Fit navigators seat
Fit fire extinguisher
Battery sticker
Buy and secure safety triangles
Buy and fit first aid kit (or maybe borrow the one from home)
Buy and fit new dissy cap and rotor button (nobody had any in stock)
Fit 3 inch harnesses to replace old 2 inch
Change wiper blades
Secure radiator overflow bottle
Fill with petrol

It's a MUCH shorter list then my other cars...

Best part about this, the consumable stuff I bought was more then the cost of the car :D

you know, if you put your time into working on your projects instead of buying more projects that allegedly need less work than the last one but never do, then you'd have finished one by now :p

His place will end up looking like ALLMTR's.
Nice score BTW.:)

The yard is starting to look a bit crowded... doesn't help that I can't get the new car trailer through the gate in to it's area so it has to stay out the front until I dog proof it. This "project" is only going to be one weekends work, one weekends racing and then one weekend to scrape it off the tree and get rid of it. (or store it until the PF Hampton weekend for the next owner)

Picked up the rest of the spare parts today, now I need to put them under the house, it's going to take a while!

http://www.hoonboy.com/Honda/Images/08.parts.jpg

Under all those struts there are a few gearboxes...

http://www.hoonboy.com/Honda/Images/09.parts.jpg

It looks so different after being hit with the high pressure sprayer...

http://www.hoonboy.com/Honda/Images/10.cleaned.jpg

Seat mount is half done, hope to finish off the rest tomorrow. Had to use a universal rail set which cost more then the car, blown the budget now!

Does it drive ok? ( I am assuming you have punted it down the road atleast)

HoonBoy
07-12-08, 10:03 PM
I think it's already sold... that is assuming it is still driveable after next weekend!

HoonBoy
07-12-08, 10:04 PM
Drives fine, got an exhaust rattle in reverse but I can live with that.

Grumpy Rooster
07-12-08, 10:07 PM
Just take it off. That'll fix it.

Scrubs up not bad.

Can't believe you got all those spares/junk.

HoonBoy
07-12-08, 10:10 PM
If I could be bothered, the second exhaust system may fix it. I'll leave that to the next owner :p

I can't believe I have to move all the spares before the weekend!!

HoonBoy
12-12-08, 01:32 PM
95% ready to go for the weekend, got to do:

Replace a small section of roll cage padding
Fit replacement rotor button for the replacement rotor button that didn't fit
Check timing and advance a bit just for the hell of it
Change wiper blades
Fill with fuel
Avoid tress and other hard things!

Had to empty out the box trailer of parts as well, there are three sets of struts, 4 gearboxes, two starter motors, three carbs(two stock, one 32/36 weber), two radiators with thermo fans, two guards, a bonnet, a drivers door, complete exhaust system, control arms, driveshafts, reground cam, two cobra race seats, six wheels (two with rally tyres) and some other assorted bits and pieces. Whats the bet I break something that I don't have and need to buy it!

Photographer was in the wrong spot. I got enough upwards movement for it to wheelspin at the top of second gear, which was hard for the power it had, I got a cheer from one of the officials so it must of been OK!

So the full run down for the weekend...

Got the car ready, passed scrutineering easily enough, had to wrap some tape around the positive battery terminal and take off the airfilter as the way I had it on could of caused the throttle to jam.

Did the first run OK, getting used to the car which is very controllable on the dirt, had a moment in one very wet left hand bend and biffed the right hand edge of the front bumper. It didn't dtop me so that was fine :) A few banging noise from the back over the larger bumps, but that wasn't a worry either :D

Wife had her first run, hit a bump going in to a corner which thre her hand off the steering wheel and the car up on to a dirt bank stopping less then a metre from a large tree. Fortunately SLO78U was on hand and dragged the car back on to the track.

Second run went better but I hit the same bank again! time was faster but the car felt a little slower going up hill. Second run for the wife was better and didn't hit anything.

Third run, I missed the bank! But I lost it on the VERY slippery next corner and lost a lot of time getting out of the mud. Got to love rally tyres for not getting completely bogged :) Power was even lower, hills were becoming a problem. Time was faster again so I was happy. Wife's third run was much better again and took a heap of time off the previous run she was really starting to enjoy this rally stuff.

Next came the recce for the second circuit, at slow pace it was obvious that the engine was not well, it would not get to redline in 1st gear on a flat section and it looked like there was a bushfire behind you. After struggling through the bigger hills, it was obvious that it wasn't going to last and we pulled out of the rest of the event.

Back at the service area it became obvious just how much smoke there was and how much power was lost, holding the engine at 2,000rpm with it parked had smoke bellowing out the exhaust! I resisted the calls of bricking it in the hope of being able to do a dodgy re-ring, install the reground cam, weber and extractors for the next event.

Now I just need some motorvation to get it fixed, from my initial thoughts, it's going to take a similar amount of time and dollars to get this running as getting a manual valve body in to Budget-o-dore... decisions, decisions... It's also a major pain having four cars, a car trailer and buttloads of spares hanging about. If the wife didn't like driving it, the decision would be much easier...

That series of Honda engines didnt have much room for a head gasket to clamp between the bore and water jacket which leads them to a high rate of failing in such a spot. Good thing with the 1.8l is it can be shoe horned into a 74-78 Civic with most bits to make it happen being retro fitted stock bits.

ebay or blow it up at hampton

HoonBoy

I don't have a good run with selling big stuff on ebay.. they never want to pick it up! Towing it to Hampton just to blow it up is way too much effort!

With a dodgy engine rebuild, it would be perfect for the PF Hampton challenge.

Maybe I should keep it and sell budget-o-dore instead...

So I hear this heading back south (sort of where it came from) !

Bargain price as well!!!

Is the Budget-o-dore coming to the CL Rudd motorkhana on Feb 1?

Probably, hopefully, maybe... sales been on and off, I will believe it's sold when it's not in the yard anymore.

more like THE CAMIRA, you have to say it with some enthusiasm Jim.

because it is a very one off and unique camira.

CAMIRAngimmeapush?

It has been lightened for racing through an intensive oxidisation programme

HoonBoy
14-01-09, 09:02 AM
About the only part of a Camira I would want is the steering rack! If you get a chance, could you measure how far from the centre of the rack to the steering colum shaft thingy? Everything else is easy to adjust...

Jim

You want me to put effort in to this??? Bloody hell, whats a guy got to do to get the internet to do everything for him??

Bloody usefull info there! I reckon changing it to work like the Falcon conversions with a big plate from the rack and tie rods to the plate should be easy as :)
