So before I paint these calipers, I'd like to smooth the surface by, presumably, filling the casting imprints.

What should I use that will stand up to the rigours of braking?

No really, would some sort of exhaust putty work?

Flapper disc on an angle grinder. They come up a treat.

Not just file them off

Quicksteel

File finish FTW. It will be lighter too.

I want easy....

I might just take them to my mates place and see if he will mill them and sand blast for me.

depending on depth, file/sand it flat (they look cast iron, alloy calipers would file/sand easy) or fill with some type of epoxy resin found at any local engineering store (they have some fancy stuff), doubt it will fall out with heat, the paint layer will hold it, haha, should be easier to sand smooth then quicksteel or kb weld.

all that aside, i would just clean and paint as it, it's not like it's going to look non-attractive, but maybe this is for autosalon or maybe just a real maticulous owner i'm not sure.

Honestly, if you just want the writing gone, then a flapper disc will clean it off in 30seconds. Dont worry about a mill.
I got all the casting imperfections out of mine this way, and the paint was nice and smooth.

Potsy looks like the writing on them is an indent rather than raised.

Yep, i know.
I'd still vote the Flexovit flapper disc.

quick side question, what is meant by "engineering store"? i've been looking for a place for epoxy shit for years now. . . .

just grind it off. it'll give you less unsprung weight, and if it can be less thick with the imprints, then it should cope just fine with the same thickness for the entire unit.

Engineering stores are the sort fo place where you can buy industrial tools, pipe fittings, fasteners, adhesives, etc etc etc. Look up www.blackwoods.com.au to get an idea of what a typical Australian one is like.

No published prices online and then you go in there and there are no prices on the shelves (if you can get to the stock area that is). Pricing depends who you are and if you don't have an account then your pretty much stuck paying double what its worth.

Tut is in Belgium. I was merely pointing him to one with a website so he could see what sort of stuff such a place stocked.
