So not being into bikes at all, i happen to come across an article in a mag i was reading at work, saying that the YZF-R1, i assume that means, it is just the normal R1?

has crossplane crankshaft, instead of conventional type engine?

also has twin injectors per cylinder.

dual length manifold etc.

how does this bike compare to the old engine bike?

good or no good, they say the torque is easier for the rider to control?

sorry if it has been discussed already, hook me up with some links, as i thought it was interesting to find out the pros and cons.

Well its won 3 out of the 4 super bike races this year with a bloke who hasnt seen the tracks before. Id say that if you can actually hang on to an R1 a full throttle the new one would grip a little better out of corners

says injector changeover is at 9k rpm, which is "mid rpm", how freaken hard do they rev, if 9k is "mid rpm"?

09 test ride... believe the hype!
just dropped down to pro kawasaki/yamaha on Moss St to get a new tyre for the g/f's zx2... and low and behold, what do i see? 3 09 r1's being prepped as test bikes for tomorrow morning... cheekily asked if i could go for a test ride now and not tomorrow and spent a great 30 minutes playing

Since reading about the new R1 i have been half sceptical about the hype surrounding it, so it was one hell of a great shock to see that most of the hype is true.

sitting position is VERY comfortable for me, bars are at a good angle, so are the footpegs in the upper/back position. Controls are all easy to find and the D-mode switch is easy to change on the fly with no looking and no worries. Dash is very clear and easy to read despite all the info (all useful). Feels like 600 to sit on, quite wide, but very short though.

Then you start the motor...... I can quite clearly say that all the video clips on youtube etc of the exhaust and the bike running do it no justice whatsoever! The intake noise when you blip the throttle is absolutely awesome and complements the exhaust - i could almost contemplate not buying an aftermarket exhaust for it....but then i think it wouldn't be doing it full justice if i didn't!

Taking off for the first time is a little strange, you sort of almost stall it as the motor doesn't pick up like your expecting at first, but you get used to it within 2 or 3 sets of lights. There is a slight vibration, but nothing like you'd get off a v-twin.

The first thing that strikes me is how quickly the motor spins up..... gentle take off, little bit of throttle and suddenly i find myself doing 80 with no effort and in almost no time! As for bottom end... apart from the "pause" (easily gotten past by using just a few more revs) when first taking off in first gear, the damn thing pulls like a train from everywhere!

A fair portion of the ride was in traffic and i was just lugging around in 3rd and 4th gear and not slipping the clutch.... just slow down and let the motor pull you back up to speed on the throttle.

Of course cruising around the backstreets was good for getting me used to the position of the bike, finding the d-mode button and generally just getting a little used to the bike, but i wanted the real action... and no sooner did i think that than i got my chance, a fair series of medium speed corners before a shortish straight a few corners then a highway run.

The first few corners were interesting as i was getting used to how the bike enters the corner.... the next few were absolutely awesome as i started to crack the throttle on coming out earlier and earlier (and enjoying that intoxicating intake and exhaust sound - it becomes addictive!). And i believe at one point i actually managed to lay a blackie, but i wasn't game to check because the next corner was coming up!

The slipper clutch is a bit tight and i had her chirping a few times on corner entry on downchanges, but actually i quite like this, whereas others probably don't

The front end is planted and handles really well, and the rear end is incredible.... People ask if you can actually feel the difference in the power delivery and how planted the rear end is on this bike... it's night and day to me - the rear end feedback you get is enormous!

anyway, after the twisty stuff, which left me shouting and with an enormous grin on my face (test rider kept laughing at me whenever we stopped at the lights i was grinning so much), we got to a nice highway entrance, so i whacked the d-mode selector into A (best response) and FAAAAARK ME!!! Twisting the throttle hard just makes the bike squat a bit then take of like a scalded cat with a serious case of diahhorea... the response to the throttle is incredible. Front started lifting gently at about 9000 rpm and stayed there till i hit 2nd gear (at warp factor what god only knows as i wasn't looking) then the same again until till 3rd gear (yes i was trying!) and about here i had to back down for the traffic on the highway.

after which i just started playing with the gears and seeing what gear she'd pull from. At 3000rpm she really starts pulling fast! Very very easy to just dump it in 6th gear and just lug around on the highway.

Now i know i have a slight bias, but i've never got off a bike and had as big a buzz as i did from this one..... somehow i'm going to have to come up with the cash for one - finally Yamaha have produced an R1 with a bottom end again, that (i think) looks good and damn near makes you cream your pants when you open the taps and listen to the glorious song being made by the engine Smile

If you can, i'll make only 1 recommendation - test ride one if you can

I'm not sure if you need to be a member to view so i just threw it in here for you. Theres alot of other stuff on the forum about it.

I'm still stuck on chassis #0000010 on a 1/98 R1 and loving it after 88,000ks (about 13k of them are mine)

They sound, absofuckinglutely unreal with a full system. I mean really, really, really fucking unreal. Think RC30/45 but way ballsier.

At PI for the ASBK/WSB opener and I couldn't get enough of the exhaust note of the new R1. Every time I was free and the team Yam boys were warming the bikes up Id wander up there for a few minutes and get wood.

Front of the race fairings looked odd, and overall they dont look as nice as the older model I dont reckon but fuck me do they sound unreal. I took some vid on my phone hoping to capture the sound but the mic is crap as it turns out so no joy.

They seemed to go ok, nothing startling though and in theory they wouldnt have the top end of the I4s (which is what it looked like on the track too for the local boys at least - not that it would matter on the road) - which is a big move in the opposite direction compared to the older R1s that had a big top end hit.

Tell you what Im looking forward to round 2.. :D

Saw one in real life the other day, looked very nice although the factory exhausts are huge.

Some guy in QLD recently bought one for $21k on road, I thought that was fairly expensive but it doesn't surprise me.. no idea how much Sydney dealers are charging for them, I'd say the first people buying them aren't getting a deal by any means.

I'm looking forward to having a ride of one, although at the same time i'm trying to avoid it.... I figure it'll cost around $6k over what mine is worth (minimum), and I don't know whether it'll be $6k better. No doubt if I ride one I'll find some way to justify to myself that it is..... :)

I heard one, with an exhaust, on full noise the other day, absolutely pornworthy... fucking awesome.

The guy was typical R1 tosser though, big wheelie down a completely packed Moss Street.

Hate those headlights.

hmm didn't even know there had been a major revision since mine :) - guess thats what you get for being a car guy that likes bikes... must go test ride.

although the 9,000 rpm wheelie sounds exactly like mine.. i like the fly by wire too :)

You realise thats an R6 based chop of what a "R7" might look like - lots of MV bits used in the image.

This is the ugly fucker:

Pretty awesome, I'm no bike guy but that video does sound fucking horn, no doubt it's all to do with the flat plane crank. I know other racing engines I've heard with one always sound amazing.

The reason its won the first few superbike races is all spies and certainly not only the bike...

Its good yes and it allows Yamaha to finally run big bang in Superbikes

Will it turn your average punter into Rossi? Errr no...

Power delivery should be much improved though
