OK so a few weeks ago Damo picked this up from Pickles for me:
http://www.rowdyrallysport.com/stuff/photos/VT@pickles.jpg
http://www.rowdyrallysport.com/stuff/photos/29032009102.jpg
1998 VT S pac Supercharged. It was a repo and came complete with about this much rubbish:
http://www.rowdyrallysport.com/stuff/photos/29032009109.jpg
but has a 10 psi S/C pulley (pulls 10 pound no probs) and a twin 2.5 into 3 inch exhaust (which will have to go- waay too low and heavy.
It still needs a tiny bit of work- new rear bumper cover, new airbox(ordered), and me to fit some new Lower Inlet manifold and rocker cover gaskets for it to be running reliably.
I'm holding off doing anything with it til all the other cars are sorted and gone, but have already got a manual pedal box on the way, so just need to get a T56, and order a flywheel, clutch and bellhousing from chevtorque in WA and it'll be manual baby.
Will have the 17's for a sale in a coupla weeks though if anyone is interested.

Rowds. Just out of curiosity, what was/is the price of getting it all manual? pm if you want.
rowdytoot
30-03-09, 02:00 PM
Swill - from my understanding.
for a T56:
factory manual pedals - 200 bucks
custom flywheel/clutch and bellhousing from chevtorque- about 1600 bucks I guess.
T56- 1500 bucks tops s/h.
stock t56 mount - however cheap I can get one- say 200 bucks.
clutch master, slave and lines- 200 bucks say?
wiring and ECU cheats- 300 bucks.
so probably a bit over 3700- ie. more than the cost of the car.
Mal woods will sell you a 'kit' for about 2.5x times that...
For T5 I reckon it looks like:
pedal set:200
flywheel 500 (chevtorque)
T5 and bellhousing- 500-750
clutch 300
wiring and ECU cheats- 300
so 2200 ish.
the extra cost of the T56 isn't too bad.
Damo- hrmmm... the white ute is wearing all stockies now. thinking about the wheels on the VT...hrmm..

Hey I just thought of something...
This car was repo'ed in Canberra right?
And you got hte ignition replaced with codes from Holden and stuff right?
Does that mean that someone who had their commodre reposed from them now has the keys to your car?
Dun dun dahhh!
Good to see that the previous owner also thought it was more important to buy Bourbon and Coke pre mixes, than it was to pay back his loan.
If he was serious about paying it back... THen those would have been Woodstock not fancy la di dah Beam!
Also, why the fuck does he have an opened packet of pasta and sauce in there? Was he cooking in the car or something?

Ian, what have you heard?
Sorry forgot about this thread, that and working nights so I can't get near a computer long enough.
Stories I've heard include new owners not changing the plates and finding their "new" car going missing the first time they leave it at the supermarket. People having getting car jacked/bashed/shot, has happened in the US. Granted mainly on cars that are easy to identify, those shitty wheels would make this thing easy to spot. Ask any towies about repo jobs, most hate them with a passion.

Cheers Ian,
This one came without plates, and the wheels are already off it and about to go onto ebay, and will only be driving to/from rallies anyway, but I can understand what you are getting at with it. .... plus it's insured so even if it gets stolen from our place we're covered.

By my reasoning, anyone who leaves their birthcertificate in their (about to be repo'd) car along with opened packets of pasta sauce is not going to have the skillz to steal a car. They probably have velcro shoelaces and don't own a belt.

so after a few months in the 'wilderness' that is/was Damo and Rorges backyard, the VT came home after hampton. Many thanks to the randoms who 'donated' it to me after I said it was too good to hampton bash- that's the official g/f accepted story and any p'fers who even hint at another version will be killed... ;)
So it's now sitting in my shed, and damo is getting up me to get it to a hillclimb in oh 3 weeks, and the only weekend I'll have to work on it I'll be in brisvegas for the rugby uniion! awesome!
so what's the plan.
1) find rear bumper a new or plastic weld the one I've got.
2) finish interior strip out- might take a day off next week and do that...
3) fit new battery- something sealed that'll be happy in the cabin eventually.
4) fit new rear window
5) new rear tail light
6) fit new rocker cover gaskets
7) change oil, filter, and coolant
at this stage I don't think it needs more powers, or torques for teh dirt, until we've got a handle on the thing. It picks up between 60 and 130 pretty quick at the moment, and that'll be plenty for finding our feet on dirt.
I need to sell the uterus- panels being painted today, and teh gemini- Chris5ltr is working on the new front guard for that for me-champion!-to fund the big work, which will be:
full strip, cage and sump and tank guards
3.9s and tru trak diff
T56 conversion- anyone got a t56 going cheap??
bilsteins new suspension
usual rally gear-seats, harnesses etc.
i wanna do some carbon/kevlar on the sideskirts and front lip to give them a bit of impact/abrasion resistance too
Longer term I've worked out that I really want a VZ monaro rear subframe for it- that gets me the toe control links with vented rear discs & matching calipers that will still fit under 15 inch wheels.

rowdytoot
27-08-09, 05:49 PM
it's got a tear in it somewhere near the top, and it's got a few scuffs and some paint transfer from where it's been reversed gently into something yellow by the silly french bitch who owned it when it was repo'd.
thermostats are a cunt to change on these, it's under the throttlebody. Holden up here say blower has t come off (horseshit) but you can get it with a 6" 1/4"dr extension and a 10mm 6 point for the easy to access bolt and a cut off 10mm ring spanner to slowly work the rearmost bolt around (a poofteenth of a rotation at a time, haven't found a ratchet spanner small enough to get back there).
If you do a combustion leak test (the gas ones) and it comes back positive, it's probably just your intake manifold gaskets.
Oh, and best coolant we've found for them is the Tectaloy VPlus :D

spent today working on the VT -aside from the coupla hours spent doing some heavy lifting for the girl-although given she moved a full sized railway sleeper about 25 metres by herself yesterday....
have fitted the p/s cooler and bled the system- messy, but all good. hopefully got the small leak fixed too.
rivetted the brackets to the VX rear bumper I bought and fitted it up
bought some aerocatches for it a coupla weeks back, so ill fit them up tomorrow morning, as well as the extinguisher brackets.
have to check with a dude on ebay, but I might be able to get hold of an entire VY rear end- which would give better toe control.
Currently the ride heights (hub to guard) are 380 mm rear, and 370 mm front- which are ~ stock apparently, although I think the front is very low, and will need to come up about 30 mm at least

Cage will start when prolly december ish- wanna have a run at the hillclimb in mid november- so all the work at the moment is going into preparing it for that.
I've gotta sell my VS ute & the gemini to 'raise the capital' to do the cage, and suspension, which will then free up a bunch of space too!
Rod Kilby will be doing the cage- he lives about 2 minutes from my place, and his w/shop is only 10 minutes away.
Cage will be the full set of bars- tower to tower, Xbraced main hoop, with harness bar, Sainz bars, windscreen spreader, Xdoor intrusions. integral rear shock tower brace.

rear spoiler ghetto painted in hammertone charcoal topside, satin black underside- superdodgy styleee.
I belted out the slight crumple in the passenger guard out this morning, and have spent the arvo sorting the interior wiring still got a coupla hours work to sort it out finish it off.
Have got hold of a battery isolator, will work that out during the week, along with the battery relocation.
am planning on getting some neg on the fronts next weekend hopefully!
the P/S is bled finally,

OK photo time :D
done as attachments cos I'm feeling lazy! :D
aerotech flush bonnet pins- they're fiddly as to install, require lots of cutting- the underside of the bonnet ain't pretty, but meh...
ghetto sprayed rear spoiler- satin black underneath (turned out uber shite) so I used some charcoal hammertone spray on the upper side and that turned out pretty OK think for 10 minutes with a piece of sand paper, 2 coats of primer, and about 4 of colour. All done on an oily tarp in my driveway!
rear bumper is on now, and fits lovely I've dispensed with most of the factory mounts, and only using the 2 through the boot wall- it's only light so it hands on fine.
I got a little more neg on the front on sunday arvo- on one side anyway, definately possible to get a heap more.
Hopefully during the week I'll have time finish the wiring stuff off (removing rear power door locks, and window wiring and stuff) leaving the w/end to make extinguisher mounts, a battery clamp, and a shield for the radiator overflow, and get the seat back in it!

OK decision has been made to remove the power locking& windows from the rear doors - simplifying wiring stuff, saving more weight too :D
Have sourced (ta Damo and the boys) some nice fat battery cable for the battery relocation.
have also decided that I won't bother with alu sheilds for the radiator overflow (lives in the front guard in front of the wheel) I'll get some kevlar and lay that up instead.

31-10-09, 06:49 PM
man I should have removed the rear door power stuff days ago. All of a sudden sorting out the wiring became MUCH easier. Still have power locking and windows in the front though :D I'll make the loom all pretty when it's out of the car for the cage build.
made an extinguisher mount this arvo- really simple! 4 holes in a bit of aluminium strap, and a bend on one end
refitted the front bumper.
refitted the drivers seat- but then noticed that I'd left it at an odd height/squab angle before I removed it- and the squab and height are power adjustments. will have to hit it with 12 V tomorrow!
tomorrow it's time to build a battery clamp, an ECU mount/brackets/ power window switch bracket etc.

got a bit more done on the VT yesterday- battery clamp complete and ECU mount mostly made- just gotta tidy up some wiring, and nicely finish some edges, then quick vacuum and, then brakes(pads/rotors/bleed), alignment etc. Add a sticker ninja sticker too!
I took it for a quick blat up the street yesterday, and it single pegs big style as soon as you hit full throttle :D Will be MUCH better with the LSD rear end in it, but will bag up more in a lower ratio!

OK time for a list of things before sunday.
1) fix thermo mounts
2) bleed cooling system
3) top up auto trans
4) tidy up interior/ wiring -P Clips to sills
5) tidy up ECU mount
6) bleed brakes/install brake pads/radius rod bushes (if they arrive)
7) wheel align (home)
8) check handbrake adjustment (seems weird)
9) check diff oil
10) clean up engine bay
11) install bluetooth GPS receiver (5Hz)
12) fab a mount/power for N96 to log speed etc.
not much really!

max'd out the neg camber on the front- I have about 1 degree neg at full suspension droop- which should mean 2.5 at least at ride height..
going to do the rear brakes now, and then bleed everything.
feeling quite edgy about having a drive ;)
I want to see skids tomorrow
Skids or drifts. Or both.
Will try and get out for a look. Good luck with the debut. Hopefully the forcast of heat won't be a problem.
Crikey... it actually made it there, and ran... and did skids.

Vids are currently encoding at home. Will have them up on jewtube or something tonight.
Not a bad day out.
Once again struck scrutes who have NFI about the general requirements, and was told that as my car was unreg'd it HAD to have a cage, 4 point harness and rear firewall, I played it dumb, and said, oh I didn't realise etc etc. So they let me run.
I double checked the manual when I got home-cages, 4 pt harnesses etc, and aren't required til State and above for unreg'd cars in hillclimbs- although that just proves that the speed event rules are bizzare- cos you could run the same car with reg, and not be required to have a cage etc. I have NFI how you can justify that on a risk basis- Rego'd cars are safer in crashes??? I guess it just reinforces my view that Tar baby regs are a special kind of misguided in some instances.
The other amusing comment the scrute had was that 'the wiring was shithouse' it was pretty had to resist "it's the factory wiring, just doesn't have the pretty plastic covers on it..." but I did!
nonetheless they let me run.
Slow(didn't get over 100 km/hr - came close on one of the early runs), ill handling, no traction (completely worn road rubber and an open diff),auto never new what gear to be in, amusing enough. It's a long day for sub 5 minutes of driving though. I don't think I can come up with an event that involves less driving in a 7 hour competition day- next time won't bother hillclimbing- will go to wakefield.
Was good to catch up with Buzz, lobby, shell, and of course Simsy and Damo :D
Oh and now I leave the Vt alone for a few weeks- and get the VS and the Gemini ready for sale so I have the $$ to pay Rodney for the cage, seam welding, sump guard, rear firewall, VY Xmember strengthening, K frame plating etc.

If the tank is under the boot floor & the filler pipe is enclosed in a "fire proof cover ,then NO rear bulkhead is required. If the tank or any other part of the fuelling system [surge tank, pump, fuel lines, filter] is inside the boot ,then a sealed /fireproof bulkhead must be fitted. Sched.B.11

tank is under the boot floor, filler pipe isn't inside the boot either. so their was no need :D if push came to shove I was going to go through the manual with them, in detail... would have been fun!
Additionally even if the filler pipe was in the boot, if the car was road rego'd there would be no requirement to have a 'firewall'! If the interior was all in place- the rear seat folds down, the parcel shelf and seat back have so many vent holes in them, they may as well be swiss chesese, and the seats ares is made of flammable materials. In my view having or not having a seat in place is neither here in a standard fuel system road car.
When the car gets caged etc, a 100 litre fuel cell, pumps and surge tank will live in the boot, and will definately be firewalled :D
You know I hate to point this out Dave, but both the Speed event bit and Shed A and B are incredibly inconsistent in their approach fro no reasonable safety reasons and unncessarily lead to confusion for all :D

Nah... you enjoy pointing it out :D......I do have a good sense of humour luckily & I do agree that the Cams "book" isn't all it should be.
I/we don't get uptight about things like that over here [Hillclimb&sprint only]...if there is "daylight " visible through the cabin floor/boot floor/rear bulkhead ,we TELL,not ask, the the driver to tape the holes B4 issuing the OK.
There is plenty of latitude given & we are definitely "Fair but Consistant"
We keep a record of ALL faults found on non Log Booked cars ...3 strikes ...they are not "OUT" ,but it WILL be fixed properly B4 they get passed, which I feel is fair enough.{you may not] Non Race events are all for a "day out".to enjoy a track /hill without rubbing too much paint off [unless it is self inflicted!]
Circuit Racing on the other hand is definitely more to the book , especially when a Steward is looking over your shoulder.
EG: A top running Under 2litre IPRA car...Doing a Targetted Scrutiny Audit last Sunday...had a "baked beans sized tin" for an Oil Catch Tank.
The specs. state that the tank will be 2 litres for up to 2000cc ,3litres if over.
I should have put a "fail" for that which would have meant a visit from the Stewards & a note in his Log Book to be rectified by the next meeting. I know the driver & he Knows me...I explained the rule & even recommended an easy fix to fit in the space .Next time I see his car I will have a look. Is that fair or not?:D
**** the last 10 events he did were all in the eastern states!! & not picked up at his last 2 Audits, but as you said , they wanted a rollcage & harness in your "F..W...odore"..slack & that crap would not occur in SA.:wtf:

16-11-09, 10:33 AM
Dave- indeed- I agreed with all of that.. (and that's gotta be a 1st!) :D
I expect when I go rallying that things will be looked at properly. and circuit racing for sure- the risk is much larger!
baked beans tin sized - geez.. on the FWodore I'm just going to run the factory breather system cos finding somewhere to fit a 3 litre catch can is just hard work! :D
BTW I have NAFFs for every event I've ever done in the gemini and I make sure my car is compliant- I always read the regs closely. Once when I was 1st starting out a nice scrute very nicely pick up a loose bolt on the steering coupling- I went outside, droped the sump guard, undid everything, did it all back up nicely and represented, no drama.- I then proceeded to drive the car up a bank at 100 km/hr and DNF the event, and bent everything in the front end- rails, Xmember, rack, control arms,(all plated & gussetted) and the LHS hub carrier!
*1* Dave- indeed- I agreed with all of that.. (and that's gotta be a 1st!) :D
*2* BTW I have NAFFs for every event I've ever done in the gemini and I make sure my car is compliant- I always read the regs closely.
Thanks mate!!:worship:
I'm sure you do!;)
You have to 'enter 'your car onto the Targetted Scrutiny Audit System.
then has to be done at least every 5th event. We do the cars that are due + any others up to 25% of the entries [ Circuit only, not Speed/non Speed]

Even though the exhaust is a twin 2.5 into 3 inch it's still waaay too quiet.. I think it needs 3's into 3.5 with no mufflers and to dump though the rear bumper will be easy once the fuel tank comes out :D
'MMoooooooooooooooooooooo"
In rally, I don't think a catch can is required if all the special stages are on dirt.Transport stage ,the car reverts to a "road reg vehicle" under the relevant State Road Rules. [May be wrong there:D...I only do the Classic Adelaide & that is all Tarmac...depends on the particular class the car is competing in.?? I am not doing the Classic this year because of "a disagreement" with the Chief Scrute regarding a Ferrari driver's helmet ....no AS or other stickers apart from a E13 sticker inside...No such certification in the book. E22 & 3 amendments, yes. On googling "E13" that night I found that "E13" is the name of the Chinese Helmet factory, but he approved it.
I got shitted off when he rejected a VW drivers helmet for a very minor scratch.Rally Scrutes are not members of the SA Motor Sports Scrutineers Assn.,we only help out with Classic because of the number of entries.
You would really enjoy them, Rowds.:)

just did some calc's at work for the T5 conversion.
Looks like the 3.45 diff ratio I already have, ready to go it will be ideal, gives top speeds in gear of 54, 89, 137, 177, and 246 km/hr at 5000 rpm,
and the drop from 5000 rpm going up the gears is to 3000, 3300, 3800, and 3500 rpm, which is waaay in the heart of torque curve.
I note that based on auto trans calcs that hitting the limiter in 1stwith the 3.07 gears as I did at the hill climb is about 75 km/hr and 120 in 2nd.
Oran park GP will be fun with the auto.. should only need to use 2nd and 3rd.

Appologies for the shakyness- seems the gopro mounts really ain't up to the task, although the camera performed quite well.
http://www.youtube.com/rowdyrallysport - see here for vids..
Car was mostly great all day- turns in surprisingly well for something so big and heavy, but the lack of a slippery diff kills it out of the tight stuff.
did manage to crack/hole the radiator overflow tank at some point, which lead to a bit of overheating but sorted that out. (wasn't helped by the 33 C ambient temperature, and the low speed of everthing)
I knew it was a risk leaving it in the stock location with no protection. Will have to make a shield for it, or wait til I relocate the battery and move it into the engine bay.
Hopefully there will be some photos of the car in action at some point.

OK so I went to an Oran Park GP driver training/track day just before it closed. Thanks to Boz, Mick Ryan and their crew for running it - tops day out, nice to catch up with all the rally dudes- MattyA, Monkhouse, pRic Cary et al. Shared a garage with Kohler and had epic lols. Kohler was punting his weber fed Datto 1600 around in semis in the low 1:27s, and having a ball.
I went with low expectations of both my ability on tar and the car, and came back feeling suitably meh with a 1:35 on road tyres, and 200,000 km old suspension.... had fun chasing a dude in M5 estate on semis though
Car chucked it's guts up after the 1st session, but a quick refill and bled and it ran OK for the second session, but started to misfire in the 3rd, 4th and I only did about 3 laps in the 5th cos it had no power at all. Powertrain light is on on the dash. I'll have to get the laptop hooked up this week to read the codes.
I finally got around to putting some of the in car up. Go Pro HD. youtube has fucked the session 2 videos converting them from widescreen to 4:3 for some reason, even though they are native widescreen videos... GRRR...
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=rowdyrallysport#p/u/2/6WF-Eq4OeNQ
just go to my channel and watch Session 1, Session 2 part 2, and session 5. If you run session 1 in HD full screen you can read the GPS speed on my phone on the dash. Session 2 has the GPS log overlayed, and Session 5 I haven't got to yet- not much point it was sloooowww...

seems like the RH O2 sensor is stuffed- so have ordered a new one (4 wire on the fuckinwooshmang engine)
Discovered a bent pin on the MAF connector was not letting the connector go in properly so fixed that.
then found the source of the misfire- #1 spark plug lead is stuffed, and is not really connected somewhere in the middle... hence not much spark at the plug...
also has suspect LIM gaskets, but will wait til the engine comes out for the cage to fix that up

going out to the shed now to fit new leads and plugs to hopefully cure the mis fire... then pull the new LSD apart to have a look to see if I need to take it to Dr Rob :D

Sweet write up Rowds, I agree with the comment earlier that this is a sensible, reasonably cheap form of motorsport, that looks like heaps of fun!!
Can't believe you bashed it round the dirt pipe sans LSD!!

yeah it sucked sans LSD.. with all the rain on the w/end I got nothing done diff wise, but will think seriously about having a look tonight after dinner..
have cured the misfire though. Goddamn it's nice to be able to plug the laptop in, read the error codes, change a sensor, replace leads, & clear the codes and have full grunt back.
Very close to having the VS ute ready for sale, once that's rego'd and sold, it'll be a full strip, and off to Lochleigh Ent. for it's cage, plating etc. etc.
Should be caged, and manual for sub 10 K including purchase price...

once i have the racechrono log i export it from the phone and use chrono2avi to record an avi of the gps log i then use adobe premiere to overlay the gps avi on the video
