View Full Version : Big Block HJ Tonner

Follow on from the 'I'm bored' thread and got a cheapo HJ tonner to muck around with. Bit more rust than I expected (every panel and some holes in floor and roof) but it'll give me a chance to work on some panel beating skills. If its really fucked when I strip it I might just bog it.:D
As it sits now pissing off all my neighbours (and parents till it goes to my place next week).

..
Plan from here is to get rid of the tray, fuel tank, engine and box. Try to recoup some money from original purchase price of $411. Chassis looks pretty good which is the main thing.
Options for body are:
- Bog it, or
- Weld in new panels, or
- Buy better panels, then
- Spray it a colour to be decided.
Engine:
468 I've already got hopefully without oil leaks
Cheater nitrous kit I've got already (maybe upgrade to big shot kit $300 ish)
Box:
T400 I have but needs rebuild ($2-3k),
or might but one already done (same)
Needs a converter ($1100ish)
Diff:
Either weld stocker (not ideal but $0)
Commodore diff (no idea)
9 inch (most likely if I can find a cheapy)
Interior:
Kirkey or Jaz uncomfortable seat
Small fuel cell in engine bay
I've got two carby fuel pumps.
Got a PWR aluminium radiator here too
I have some random HQ panels and parts I can probably use too, like a GTS grille, bonnet, nose cone. I'm searching ebay for better cond panels and there's heaps of them out there. No real budget at the moment but trying to do everything on the cheap. Long term project.

Oh yeah, I'll chuck a cage and the rest of the ANDRA crap in it too which will be the main $$$.
Not going to be registered, but if its red I can chuck the plates off the other tonner on it.:p

ive got a glide for sale still :)
Have fun, hope you know a decent panel beater/painter that can help you out. :D
You have problems, if you are that bored i have a car you can finish off. :)
So you're now a 2 tonner man. :)
The purchase price of $411 seems an odd number, how was that worked out ? lol
blackbart
30-05-09, 05:09 PM
Glide is tempting but would probably have to go 2 piece tailshaft cos of the longer wheel base of the tonner. Sorting a box is a long way off. HEAPS to do before I get to that stage. Cam and springs in the other one for a start.
Nah dont need a panel beater or painter. I'll butcher it myself.:p
Edit: 411 is from ebay. Incl the tow it owes me smack on $500. Im going to keep track of the cost of this one. The other one I dont want to know.
Nah dont need a panel beater or painter. I'll butcher it myself.:p
Nice.
This really needs a pair of MT radials.

Nah full slicks all the way, which I already have.
10's for 10k???? :)
Better not cost that much! Would be definitely less if I didnt need all the safety shit.
I'm talking total cost ie motor as well???

You going to put fibreglass panels on it?
fuckers wont rust & save decent weight, just fix the cab & paint it red.
just fuck off all the front steel off and get a fibreglass front end for it?
blackbart
31-05-09, 12:06 AM
Probably not. A bit exxy and they usually need just as much work to get looking decent. I'll see how bad everything is once I get it stripped and get the paint off.
Fibreglass front ends are a PITA. Strip the paint off and fibreglass as required :)
Will this be ready for the next Autosalon?

Ripped off the air cleaner, hooked up a battery, had the Aerostart ready, and hit the key... nothing. Had a better look at the car and its got no starter motor. May have something to do with it.:D

Opened the passenger door last night and two massive cockroaches fell out and scurried away, opened the drivers door today and kicked the door trim and four little cockroaches fell out and scurried away.
Currently has one of those roach bombs going off inside it. Third car I've had to roach bomb. One was for red backs though.

Now in driveway. Took the tray off and with three of us we still couldn't lift it! Had to sort of slide it off. I can't believe how heavy it is when only the base is steel. I put the aluminium one on the red tonner by myself.
Emailed Andrews Race Cars and an 8 sec cage template is $900. I think thats for moly though. Doesn't have to go through the back window either which is interesting.
Planning on taking the front off the car on Thurs arvo, and probably ripping the engine out too. More crap for ebay.
Waiting on photos of uncles cab too. If its in better condition, which it must be, then I'll use it.

Cage template??? What does it include?
blackbart
02-06-09, 02:02 PM
All the precut pieces for certain common cars. Just needs to be welded in. I sent another email to try and clarify the rear bit and he said something about the bars going under the tray like TOYTON, then something else about welding it near the diff with an X piece in the middle which will need to go through the rear screen.
I dunno. Cage is a fair way off yet. I've looked at the ANDRA rule book and I dont know how he does it while staying in the cab.
HoonBoy
02-06-09, 02:12 PM
ahh, that makes sense, just a weird name, I would call it "weld in cage, not fitted" like everyone else does.
Whats the basic ANDRA rules? Do they have them on-line or do youhave to buy the book?
blackbart
02-06-09, 02:51 PM
You have to buy the book. There is pictures with measurements and a table with the required tube thickness.

Looks like pretty much all the panels can be saved except the passenger side door. They wont be pretty but will do the job cheaply. Cab is super stuffed.
Man, I thought my neighbours were shitty...
Ha Ha, nice Blairs Tyres sticker on the back window!
I now know exactly where that house is.......
The Wife used to live just around the corner, small world eh?

Yeah, pretty quiet street too so no one drives past unless theyre lost or live here. I'm moving next week so blue tonner will be going with me.
So the blue one is going with you, so can i have the red one?

Red one stays locked up. Unless you want to pay for the cam and springs. Then I'll let you drive it up there and straight back.:D

Sold some random stuff and parts off this so total has gone down for now.
Going to put it in the garage tomorrow and rip out the engine, trans, dash and column.
New garage or old garage?
blackbart

Old. Havent moved yet. Red one does not live on street so it will be back outside after its stripped.

Will get some pics on the weekend but cars panels, doors, interior, dash, wiring, etc all stripped. Sold some stuff and bought some stuff so at the moment the grand total is $430.20. Still have about $230 worth of stuff that people have said they'll take but haven't picked up yet.
Got paint stripper and bog (4l of each thanks to Sucker) so panel work can start soon. Garage at my new place (single lock up in a unit complex) doesn't have a power point so I'll be doing all the work at the house.
Looking for a new cab and passenger side door. Found a great cab just trying to get some more pics and a price. Going to rip off the old cab and not sure what to do with it. I want to clean up the chassis (full of dirt and dust) and get the engine and box mounted without converter.
Still waiting on pics of uncles cab!:p
Trying to decide on whether to get the old Slingshot converter sent back with a 'this is shit, fix it' (probably cheaper), or just order a new one from TCE ($1200ish).
Also what are peoples opinions on diffs? Go 9 inch straight out or modify a Commodore?
Reckon a 4l fuel tank mounted up front will do for a burnout, staging, pass, and return to pits with a little left for safety? (850dp ~450hp + 200hp nos).

Had to take the glass out of the stuffed door toady and pulled it out of the rust hole at the bottom of the door.:D
So you haven't finished the body work yet?
I'm not sure how good the paint stripper is so put a little bit on your arm to see if it works, after 5-10 minutes it should start to feel warm.

No worries. If you need to check if fuel has gone off just rub some on your arm pit.
Finished the body work yet?

Working on three cars at home at the moment. I used paint stripper for a while and its ok but hard to get the paint off the bogged sections. Doing the nose cone and theres not that much rust but alot of bog covereing small dents. Way too much when a small bit would have done it.
Other panels will have the rusted bits stripped back, bogged, and primered. Cant be fucked getting it all back to bare metal.
Todays goals are to get tow bar on the red tonner (did the carpet yesterday) and change the smashed indicator on the daily then tow it somewhere.:D

Bought a spare TH400 last year and ripped the pan off it today. Looks pretty clean inside. No crap in the pan and fluid nice and red. Might throw it in with one of the old converters and see what happens.:p

Going to wire brush the chassis tomorrow and give it a quick coat of rattle can Kill Rust matt black.
Pulled the brake lines off too. Brakes are something I'm not going to bodge up. Got a set of working front callipers, disks, and soft lines spare from the red one. Also a plate and Mazda master cylinder that goes on. Don't need a booster.
Also picking up a better condition cab on the weekend. Ebaying some cab rubbers too cos the old ones are too farked to go back on. Hoping to have the new cab mounted and the bottom of the floor painted on the weekend. Got to change the engine sump gasket and the oil filter on the auto then I can fit them. They'll come out again at some point. Going to use the old converter out of the Statesman. It was around 2200rpm stall but the nitrous should push it higher. Not going to bother trying the Slingshot one, too loose even with the engine NA.

Going to wire brush then clean with thinners and just spray it on. As long as its black I don't care if its not perfect.

Ordered some new cab mount rubbers for $110.
As per converter cleaning thread in General I'm going to take my three big block converters to Re-Nu and have a chat about getting one good one. Failing that the Slingshot one goes back to them for fixing @ roughly $200.
Went and picked up a better condition cab today. Made a pit stop on the way back. Has fark all rust. One sill has a tiny bit, the bottom of the rear window has some surface along with the floor. Also got two doors and a drivers side guard thrown in that are all way better than what I have.

Got a new sump gasket for the 454 also. Its either leaking from there or the rear main, I reckon rear main but you have to take the cap off to change it and fark that. It wasnt leaking that bad so I put a one piece gasket with silastic on it.

I'll dummy fit the engine and trans to work out where to drill the hole for the trans mount on the cross member and to check the angle its going to sit on. Once the rubbers get here the cab will go on and get painted. Then its a matter of fixing/painting the panels and fitting the assorted parts I have here, radiator, hoses, wiring, etc. Absolutely run out of money now and no more will be spent for at least three weeks.
Still needs diff, tailshaft, oil temp and water temp gauges with electric senders, tacho, seat with mount, a few nitrous fittings. I really need to make a list.:p

take the main cap off and change the seal you lazy cunt:gay:
Also, do yourself a huge favour and weld some steel across the trans crossmember, mine flexes real bad let alone big block torque...
That cab dont look too bad btw!
p.s. got any calipers lying around:)

Already got the sump back on. It was a really minor leak I just changed the gasket cos it was out.
My old Statesman used to have a stock cross member in it. Red tonner has an rhs one. I will probably end up with another one the same.
Yes I have callipers but they're going on this one. The old ones you can have if you want.
Work on cab, etc wont be till mid next week if that. Damn work keeps getting in the way.:p

Rubbers came and new cab is sitting on the chassis. Have to jack it up and put the rubbers in tho. Farkin heavy with the doors and glass still in.
Engine, box and pipes will be mounted to get them out of the way in the garage and car rolled out. Won't be touched for a while.

Got to many cars and no space so got rid of it. Need engine to sell HQ tonner as well.
Not saying I wont get another car to build as a dragger but it wont be for a while, and not until either the HQ or Cressida or both are gone.
