View Full Version : Ski race boat build :)

well the time has come for a mate to build a new boat.. i used to race RC boats with him and his daughters are out skiing his current boat..
the plan is 8 weeks time to be finished in time for the Hawksbury 120... where his 11 year old daughter will race :)
the plan of attack is this
tomorrow we drive to melb to purchase a 565ci twin turbo motor with all the good bits... the motor has run 115mph in a V drive boat and has not be run since a freshen up will do 125mph+ in this boat
fit autronic SMC computer (I know its not a microtech!!! LOL)
1200cc injectors
cam driven fuel pump and water pump setup
turbo 400 gear box mating up to a Merc 5 drive with dry sump etc...
this will be bolted into a brand spankers 21ft Connelly boat which will be layed up in the next 3 weeks featuring 400L under floor fuel tank and 250L Ballast tank in the front.. The Boys at Connelly are very keen to get this baby on the water :)
dash board will consist of a PCS Dash with GPS speedo, G meter and EGT setup all hooked into the Autronic with enough logging to be able to log the entire bridge to bridge race...
Seats are high back Connelly race buckets and drivers are kept in contact with a inbuild radios into the helmets...
this is the look that we are going for with this boat... same hull and similer motor setup :)

Have you got a new water based dyno to tune it?
Looks like it will be a weapon, what kind of power numbers?

So it's a low-budget DIY thing?
So it's a low-budget DIY thing?
lulz...
I know shit about boats, thats pretty cool though

Cary, the engine makes around 1200hp, to be honest it will only need 800hp to run around 100mph fully loaded so we wont be working it hard..
tuning boats on the water is the only to do it.. we have full EGT setup and Lambda setup going in so tuning wont be any issues for me, boats are good to tune as they are always under load...
Hoonboy... nothing low budget about it.. we are being smart with the money and using good qualty second hand parts.. the motor is fresh and hasnt been started since a rebuild, the drive unit is fresh and is 1/4 the price of a new one. the parts that matter are new and top of the line, ie, fuel system, water pumps etc etc
it will be one well put together boat and with full backing from Connelly boats there wont be any problems with it running right and running fast..
the boat would be able to run superclass with some good skiers on it, the motor ran 3rd at southern 80 last year so it has the grunt :)
How long do the races last? Couple of hours?
What size turbos etc? Would they be a lot more free flowing because of the constant load?

Building stuff with other peoples money must be so good.

cary, TA51's from what he tells me... but illl measure them up on saturday morning.. either way they should be good for 1600hp..
sydney bridge is about the longest race and it is about 50min for these girls, super class do it in under 38min...
Blackbart, yep it is good, this is for a long time friend i used to race the RC boats with.. he sponsored me back then so now i have to return the favour! LOL
Dale, excuse my ignorance, but does 565ci = BBC? or is it some custom block thing?
Building stuff with other peoples money must be so good.
:yup:
I love working on other peoples cars :D

yes it is a BBC but the block is a aftermarket merlin block
best you bring your laptop and tune my fuel hungry ute while your in Melbourne.....seeing as you wont send me an ecu

no worries dude. will call now!!
1200 out of a twin turbo 565? what at like <10 psi ?
cant be working too hard at all
suppose thats what you want for half an hour of flat stick
HoonBoy

Hoonboy... nothing low budget about it..
I thought I was being so obviously sarcastic that it didn't need italics, guess I was wrong :)

nope not working hard at all... and on pump fuel...
you dont want to work them hard or they dont last...
at a guess im wanting to push 110mph on 10psi boost and have the boost controller setup to run 6psi and 10psi...
at the start of a long race it will be pushing nearlly 2 tonne of boat along so they work a little until the fuel levels drop..
Hoonboy yeh i thought you might have had a little joke there but wasnt sure :p
What sort of rpm are you looking at in one of these??
10sec_rx7
05-06-09, 07:55 AM
6500 tops o reckon..
Noice.
Looks like I'll be building a 6L NA LS donk to replace that rammed clevo I did a while back - clevo is running great & is reasonably competitive, but he's stepping up to 6L class & it'll lack a little there, so rather than push the clevo harder it's going in his road car & we'll build a bad ass iron block LS.
He keeps talking turbo's - I keep telling him he don't have the coin to play with the big boys, pity tho, the hull is good for a fair bit more HP/MPH.

thats awesome dale!!! I'll stick to my little outboard jobbies because that looks expensive. Build photos are a must do mate. :)

tony..
we built a social boat with a stock 6L in it. the hull is full socail and V drive with 14% gears and a stock L76 crate motor does 82mph... in a good bboat they will do 100 easy...
Bernie
dont worry pics will be happening the whole project.. we leave at midday to go get the motor.. heres hoping it is what the guy says it is...
Yup, that's why we're going LS!
It's a psyco marine hull, will be LS 6L iron block, steel crank, H-beams, forgies, main studs, head studs etc. head will be current SS 6L - whatever they are, I had a set in the other day, fuck me they've got massive potential!
Probably have to be carb on a single plane intake - gotta sus that, I'll call you when we need ignition etc for it.
tk talk with supashake on here. currently has some IPRA car with a ls motor and carb on it.
sounds good dale and well 2hp per cube doesn't sound like much work for the motor at all.
excuse ignorance, but this ski racing thing... is it just an excuse for this guy to have a hardcore boat, and drive it flat stick at the expense of his daughters arms?
ie. is the sport all about power and the skiers are just along for the ride (while obviously having enough skill to go around bends etc.), or am i missing something?
10sec_rx7
06-06-09, 01:46 PM
We are half way back now with the motor :)
For the first few years his daughter will be the limiting factor, by the time she is 15 she will be skiing 115mph and the boat will be working, basically a build it once and do it right!

this is a social boat hehe: http://www.backcountryjournal.com/socializinginanelectricwoodenboat.jpg
a boat that does 82mph is anti social and very very cool :)
10sec_rx7
06-06-09, 07:56 PM
hahaha this is like that. well not that old but it is 100% social boat...
here is the motor, it is back in sydney now and will go on the engine stand tomorrow and during the week ill get it stripped down and inspected...

turbos are T51 non roller bearing, 72mm comp wheels, 1.05 exhaust housings, twin 60mm hks gates..
apparently the gates have 16psi springs in them so ill be ripping them out and fitting 6psi springs...
also picked up the ignition system which is a MSD marine 6a2 system..
Injectors and data logger are ordered.
boat will be starting on tuesday with a mould prep :)

where do u put the fishing rods?

this is realy cool, and yet i never got the idea of why you would spend so much money on a social ski boat that would ony get used 10-15 weekends a year and cost a motza in fuel, but i want a realy fast one for shits and giggles and get bored of it in 6 months.
This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OWbJenD1jY)20b jobbie seems like a cool bit of gear
10sec_rx7
06-06-09, 08:43 PM
this will be used pretty much every weekend of the year aprat from 10 weeks in the off season

07-06-09, 07:05 PM
Ok went and saw the connelly boys this morning and got a big block ready engine stand... I then stripped the engine... Lucy i did... There was a LOT of shit in the bores and just general slap together stuff....
2 new lifters and the rest old, the reason this motor was pulled out was for a broken lifter, so why not put a full set in it????
So tuesday will order a new oil pump, 16 new solid roller lifters, arp 2000 rod bolts to replace the stock lunati ones, then i have to measure everything and make sure its right then throw it all back together...
Autronic found and will be paid on tuesdsy thanks to Gravatron ...
Didnt get too many pics but ill throw them up when i get home...
All these boat guys blow their shit up all the time so that probably explains the half arsed rebuilds.
Always the same imhe.
10sec_rx7
07-06-09, 10:11 PM
nah they dont blow them up much these days... the superclass boats generally go many races on a engine...
95% of it is good just a few bits slapped together...
once i measure it on tuesday night ill know more...

ok just got back from measuring the motor up
measued everything apart from the ring gaps and it is all good :) which is a bonus... i was a little worried that something would be wrong..
ill do the rings over the next few days and then start bolting it all together...
I'll give ya $10 if you fit this to my ute on Wednesday.

08-06-09, 08:31 PM
Got a spec list for the engine?
or is it secret squirrel?
10sec_rx7

08-06-09, 09:07 PM
Yeah thats what I was after. Mainly heads.
10sec_rx7
08-06-09, 09:16 PM
ill be ripping the heads apart in the next few days... they have inconial exhaust valves and 1 piece stainless inlet valves with isky valve springs and crane gold rocker gear..
Do you go through the gears in the TH400 ? or just leave it in top 1:1, then through a step up V Drive ?
10sec_rx7
09-06-09, 02:39 PM
no start in 2nd and change to 3rd....
HoonBoy
09-06-09, 03:31 PM
3rd = 1:1???
Looks like it'll be a vicious little setup especially with some young girls being dragged along for the ride!!

How did you dial the cam in with no lifters? :D
Nah looks fuckin tough man. The main caps look bulletproof.
10sec_rx7
24-06-09, 09:35 AM
ive got the old liffters there.. well 1 pair of new ones... what a cunt of a job it is to dial in a cam with a gear drive and no markings on it... just pure guess work... after nearlly 2 hours it was right...
the main caps weigh a fucking ton... they are not going anywhere...
10sec_rx7
02-07-09, 09:12 PM
ok what a prick of a job this stuff was...
got the altinator and Power steering pump all sorted and lined up... took fucking hours and hours... had to machine the back out of the PS pulley and re weld the hub back into it to get it lined up...
altinator was pretty easy... just remove a washer and machine a spacer...
PS pump is from a VK commo and the Altinator is from a HQ 350.. nice and easy to get parts if we need them...
water inlet pipe is done as well... -20 inlet.. thats going to cost for the fittings...

whats the hull weigh by itself ?
10sec_rx7
01-09-09, 09:35 PM
about 475kg.
it holds 420L fuel and 180L Ballast,
so can weigh over 1 tonne plus the motor and drive line which is around another tonne...
Is there a weight limit in its class?
10sec_rx7
01-09-09, 09:43 PM
nah no rules at all apart from the basic fuel shit.. no exotic stuff.. avgas or pump are legal everything else banned...
the heavier the better, it gives the skiers a smoother wash to ski in so as soon as it gets a little rougher the ballast tank is filled, it can be filled in under 1min and empied in under 2 :)
E85 classified as pump, or is it "special"
10sec_rx7
02-09-09, 09:16 AM
wouldnt hold enough in the tanks to make it through the race...
Ah, guess thats a good defining factor.
not sure what is crazier, the spotter (or whatever they're called) sitting cm's from this engine at full song watching the skiers, or the skiers themselves at 120mph behind it on a piece of carbon fibre/fibreglass.... top work dale,

why do you need mufflers? all them thai 1gz-gte boats running on the rivers don't need mufflers, and they aren't that loud!
out_in_front
17-09-09, 01:50 PM
Are they pointing directly at the back of the boat? photo angle might be playing tricks though. The exhaust isn't going to melt / discolour it is it?

Well today is the day it hits the water!!
Seeing as how there's been no updates, does that mean someone forgot to put the drain plug back in and lottsa dollars are now sitting at the bottom of a dam or river?
Although with teh fasts this thing has, I guess it wouldn't matter whether it was in or not.
10sec_rx7
31-10-09, 08:00 PM
hahaha nah got it out there but had a few little issues, will get most of them sorted out tomorrow and get back out on monday for another test run,
on the upside the engine works, the gear box works, drive system works, data logger works etc,
10sec_rx7
03-11-09, 08:23 PM
well sucess!!!
after a few days of head bashing against the wall we got it back on the water this arvo for a good shake down run...
Ian from Autronic sorted out the ignition problems so massive thanks go out to Ian :)
this thing is going to be fast... on just a quick squeeze of the throttle it hit 80mph and wasnt even on boost or trimmed up hard.
will dump the run in oil tomorrow and fill with some of Brad Penns finest and get back out there on friday for some long runs and put Shantelle on the back for her first ski behind it.
so finally there are smiles all round!
Hot Damn!
Take a video camera!

fark yeah. 80mph and no boost! this is going to haul arse!
10sec_rx7
04-11-09, 11:56 AM
its going to be good,
totally different to the outboard.. the outboard pulls hard to around 60mph then creeps up to 70.. this thing pulls slow out of the water once at 40mph it tries to throw you out the back it pulls that hard!!
I'm not an expert on the matter but I think Prop choice is the main factor there... obviousely inboard and outboard props vary greatly. but if you put a massive 4 blade prop like you see on wakeboard boats it would pull from standstill to 60mph really well, but then it would have too much drag from that point.
10sec_rx7
04-11-09, 06:37 PM
its the fact that it is 2 tonne of boat trying to get going...
we are running a 15x26 3 blade cleaver on it now but will go to a 14x25 4 blade later on..
wow thats heavy.
interesting your going to run a 4 blade. alot of drag/circuit race boats I've seen run 2 blade props. but then again they aren't towing skiers so that must be a different kettle of fish.
I'm only just getting into boats so I'm still learning alot about all this sort of stuff!
10sec_rx7
05-11-09, 06:56 PM
most ski race boats are running 4 or 5 blade props, some even 6 blade props.. they are paying over $10k just for a prop... the one we have is a second hand prop off "The Gun" and it is still close to $3k worth i reckon..
apparently the 4 and 5 blade props settle the boat over 110mph which we are not going to get near so dont really need it.
we drained the oil yesterday and put 18L of Brad Penns finest in her today, trim guage hooked up so we know where the leg is, everything given a once over ready for some longer runs tomorrow, if the weather is good will be out there about 3 or so..
Couldn't you borrow a prop and get someone with a cnc mill with a probe to copy it?
You could make it out of billet cocaine and it would still be less than $10k.
10sec_rx7
05-11-09, 08:27 PM
probably could i suppose.. but they have a habit of throwing blades off if not done right.

here is a quick vid from the other day...
still got a few little things to sort out with a fuel pump issue..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiaYiCL00XE
That's great.
What happened with the fuel pump?
10sec_rx7
07-11-09, 08:49 PM
the cunt cant pump enough and the fuel pressure goes to ass once the boost goes over 6psi...
the problem is they are not gravety feed and need to suck though a 2 meter hose... so the electric primer pump running all the time seems to fix the problem.. so fitted a brand new 044 this morning and will take it back out on monday..

big waves from wankers in wake boarding boats come over the back.. got 2 bilge pumps that pump shit loads of water...

surely that would rip the arms off anyone mad enough to be skiing behind that boat!

im not hanging on either... got a AFR meter in one hand and laptop in the other.. good fun LOL

Could I have spotted this being towed down Warringah road towards Brookvale yesterday afternoon?
If it was, it looks pretty impressive.
If it wasn't, someone has made a clone of your boat...

yes you spotted well.. going to the sign writers..

that is fvcking sick man...
last year there was a drag boat guy testing at hazelwood when we were wakeboarding there.. he was testing props to see how the boat handled when it got air off other boats wakes... was incredible. when the boat got air it would throw sideways from the engine torque... very impressive. Apparantly with the right prop this is minimised but I preffered to watch him actually getting out of shape because it was way more entertaining!
10sec_rx7
18-11-09, 06:42 PM
yep props make a huge difference.. unfortunatly a cheap one is $3500 and a expansive one is $10k.. so we have one and one only LOL
Michael
18-11-09, 07:31 PM
What do the expansive ones do?
10sec_rx7
18-11-09, 08:36 PM
Go faster, handle better etc etc
bernie-rx7
19-11-09, 07:53 AM
I must admit the 4 blade 24' I run on the bullet is much more usable. gives away a little top end but the bullet is much more stable and accelerates harder everywhere else. heaps better for sking at a measly 75-80mph
I didn't realise that that thing weighs 2tonne!! shit thats heavy. mine would be lucky to weigh 800kg i reckon
10sec_rx7
19-11-09, 09:00 AM
you got a 24 tempest on it?? we run a 26 tempest on the 21 connelly with a 225 opti on it.. tops out at 70..
yeh man fucking hevey
motor, gearbox and drive is about 1 tonne
hull 450kg
400kg fuel
200kg ballast
plus 100kg for odds and ends
just a tad over 2 tonne,
hence the reason they go through the rough water with out even feeling it!
bernie-rx7
19-11-09, 12:11 PM
nah its a 24' trophy plus 4 blade. Actually never towed a skier at 75mph so thats proabably an exageration....

why do you run ballast in a race boat?
out_in_front
19-11-09, 01:18 PM
Motor GB and drive 1T? holy shite... I would have thought motor 300kg (ish) GB -100kg ish - that leaves the drive to weigh about 6-700kg? What am I missing?
willsy01
19-11-09, 01:26 PM
why do you run ballast in a race boat?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume it can be pumped to different parts of the hull to trim it out depending on conditions.
bernie-rx7
19-11-09, 01:55 PM
yeah depending on the vevel of chop and the weight of the skiers etc
10sec_rx7
19-11-09, 02:20 PM
yep pump the water to thr front of the boat so you can really trim it in hard in rough water to make the ride smoother for the skiers...
out in front
its more like 600kg with the turbos and manifolds,
the intercooler is about 30kg and exhaust manifolds and turbos about 50kg a side with the mufflers etc
gearbox 100kg
drive is a few hundred with the gimble etc etc
bernie,
its actually a 26 trophy the ob runs

took her out today and the oil cooler mods helped a little bit but it is still not right.. with in 120sec of running the oil temp in the sump was 112deg.. better than 135deg but still a little too hot..
so it all comes apart again tomorrow night to fit a bigger cooler...
Thats some serious coin... and power

Dale is the oil cooler water cooled or air cooled - if the former, how is the pickup arranged?
Last boat i had was a 1650 bullet with 150Merc about 15y.ago on the Georges river. 'Hi5' prop for skiing and cleaver for having fun on glass water.
The cleaver took a full half turn of the wheel (it wasn't a Momo:)) once you got going LOL
The 1650 i had got to a max of 69mph which was pretty insane for pissed idiots at 21. Mates 1750 with 225 would fly past me with an easy 20mph and heaps more stable.
If your an old B2B racer, do you remember an ol' connelly called 'Dads'?????
10sec_rx7
27-11-09, 08:24 AM
the oil cooler is water cooled.. it has its own -16 pickup off the water pickup.
the old outboads are scary.. i dont like them LOL
nah dont remember it
slightly off topic - did it come from connelly trimmed? if not, who'd he get to do the trim on it?
10sec_rx7
27-11-09, 10:07 AM
yes came trimmed and it was done by D&D auto trim at windsor, Darren does to top job :)
thanks mate, can't get no cunt to trim my mates new ski boat, will give him a ring

Hey Dale. You need a Panasonic Toughbook for tuning that thing I reckon.
You can pick them up for very cheap on ebay. Could be a valuable tool for your engine tuning overall mate :)
http://shop.ebay.com.au/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=toughbook&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Do your best to strap it on and keep on tuning :) I've seen videos of these things being dropped off buildings, run over by cars dropped in water and surviving without any worries.
Although boats generally don't interest me at all this thing is unreal!

Well it won it's first race by a lap! Each lap was about 4 1/2 min and the race was 22min long, top speed was 76mph in the rough water not bad for a 12yo girl :)
All the heat problems are now sorted with the oil temp holding well
It's got bulk power on tap now with crusing at 70mph while the engine is still pulling 6in vacuum !!

How tight can you tune cylinder temps? Are the sensors calibrated?
10sec_rx7

yep sensors are all new etc etc
can get them closer than that.. that tune up was 20min at 6:30 on saturday night so not a lot of attention was paied to the egt LOL
the autronic has full cylinder trims for all 8 cylinders,
a few % in number 6 will bring it down to the same levels as the rest of them..

heres the vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R9ecCq8M3U
30sec in it tags the limiter... a little raise of that fixes it :)
Fuck me that looks wicked.
Why do they porpoise so much when they first kick it off the line? Does it need more ballast up front or something? When I see the jet sprint guys launch they seem to kick once then they are glued to the water (?) :D
Every time i see raceboat vid like that I always hear in my head... "and then... it was destroyed in seconds (woman screams)"
10sec_rx7
03-12-09, 07:59 AM
Muz,
they usually bounce 4 or 5 times then settle, the prop is not helping and im really on the look out for a 4 blade...
that is awesome... I'll bet the video does it no justice

Where is your 'woo guy'?
I've spent a bit of time near the shoalhaven river and I just assumed it was compulsory in NSW for every boat to carry a drunk bloke who yelled 'woo' every 10 seconds from 7am to 7pm.

bit of a update.. after all the oil temp issues i thought it would be a good idea to pull the engine down and check everything out.. the high temps were resulting in a drop in oil pressure so better to be safe than sorry.. luckly all was sweet and looked like it hadnt been run.. i have fitted a external oil regulator so we can adjust the pressure with out having to play inside the motor!
here are a few more pics from the race meet from the pro photographer..

Awesome boat, simply awesome.
Many years ago i got my boat licence to drive a mates boat in the bridge to bridge, it never came to fruition. boat was called the hammer, had a narky 200 outboard on it.
Couldn't have gone any higher with the shutter speed!
Will have to pop out and check this thing running sometime

How tight can you tune cylinder temps? Are the sensors calibrated?
hey muz... we changed the cam shaft last week and now with out and changes to the cylinder trims they average about 25deg from coldest to hotest and at one point after 25min running they were with in 10deg on all 8 cylinders..
it has so much power with the new cam im looking for some 6psi wastegate springs to replace the 14psi springs they are in it..
oil temp and pressure problems solved.. the temp holds steady at 109deg after 20min running, we put a external oil pressure regulator in the system and locked up the internal reg and we can adjust the oil pressure with the turn of a spanner.. much better system.
just fixing up another little oil leak in the sump and at the back of the inlet manifold and its all ready for the nationals next week :)
Whens this running on the hawkesbury next? :D
Where are the nationals?

Just spoke to Dale. The races yesterday were postponed due to a swell in lake Jindabyne????

thanks guys just got back home.
on the last lap past she was 2min in front and doing it easy,
there was 7 girls including the VIC state champ and last years Aus champ and she lapped them both, the only one she didnt lap was her ski partener for the 2 up races and all the other skiers were behind 75+MPH boats as well,
there as also 8 boys racing and she came 5th outright which is a top effort as some of the boys are skiing at 90+ MPH...
the boat didnt miss a beat and is running the best it has ever run!
will have some pics probably next week as the racing dosent finish till friday!

Congrats Dale. Well done. Good luck for the Southern 80
Michael
25-01-10, 07:33 PM
Congrats on the win before and 2nd.
About the speed, is it really down to what the skiier can handle? spose you have signals given by the skiier on faster or slower.
The pic of your skiier she looks fairly bent over, would ba fairly sore after a full run.
IT should be on the telly, or i should get paytv if it is.
10sec_rx7
25-01-10, 09:30 PM
Yep all comes down to how fast the skier can go, the boat will do 105mph now and with a gear change will do 125mph,
She dosent get too sore she does a lot of traning and can run for well over a hour no probs at all,
it is on tv, speedweek 1pm on Sundays for the next few months
This boat needs a HD camera mounted to the front facing back :D
