as per the Australian story thread, I am going to post this off soon to the old fella.
Dear Sir Jack,
After watching you on Australian Story on the ABC, we at performanceforums.com decided it was necessary for us to get together and let you know that you are not forgotten in Australia. We, as a group, would like you to know that your achievements and success will be long remembered and revered.
For many of us you are an icon of motorsport, and source of inspiration. Your involvement with the sport is longer than most of as have been alive, and we acknowledge the huge impact you have had on the sport. Pushing your car over the line to take the WDC at the Sebring GP in '59 is an example of both your guts and everything that we love about motorsport and Australia. We doubt that any of the current crop of F1 superstars would have a tenth of the ‘balls’and grit it took to achieve what you have in your racing career, achievements that to this day are un matched.
We are all proud to be able to say that we, like you, are Australian motorsport supporters and will continue to be so while we can.
We, as a group, would like to thank you for your involvement, efforts and accomplishments, and wish you the best for your future.
With kind regards, and much respect,
The members of Performanceforums.com
any one wishing to have their name attached (real ones) either post or PM them to me and I will print out a list and post it off to him.
I think this is a great idea and urge any one who agrees with me to attach their name.
cheers, Paul
2ND paragraph....."you HAVE been an icon of motor sport" ...past tense??
he is still alive
should read....................... "you ARE an icon.... present tense???
note the question marks, it didn't sound correct.[to me]

An overwhelming majority of members watched your story on ABC on Tuesday night and after discussion felt compelled to write to you.

+1 for me - great concept and well written on the revised version (first one was good - Datzed's is REALLY good!)
Add me in - Cam McEwen
it seems rather contrived to be sending him stuff saying how much he's appreciated only after a TV show on how unappreciated he is in his own country.
but if you really must send him something, how about you take the time to research his career and mention something other than the example they gave in Australian Story of pushing the car over the line at Sebring? All that says is "we know nothing about you other than what the telly told us on Monday"

if ya think so. eg????
While I agree that it is a pity it took this show to motivate us, I dont think it will come across as contrived or in sincere, research or not.
I was more wondering If we should wish him well with his health. Dialysis is not an ingredient for a long life.
Yep put my name down

it seems rather contrived to be sending him stuff saying how much he's appreciated only after a TV show on how unappreciated he is in his own country.
In a way, I think we (as motorsport people) are a bit "insulated" from how little he is known in Australia. I just assumed he was a household name everywhere, and everybody knew of his achievements. The reason for this is when I go to motorsport events (such as Speed on Tweed) and see him (and a huge number of his cars) there, I just think "great, good on them for recognising him" without realising that all the non-motorsport followers are blissfully unaware of his achievements.
PM with name coming. Thanks for putting it together nastypaul.

The Jack Brabham Story is an incredibly good read, and the photos are brilliant.

Block mounted picture with a plaque could be easier.

Dear Sir Jack,
After watching you on Australian Story on the ABC, we at performanceforums.com decided it was necessary for us to get together and let you know that you are not forgotten in Australia.
Performanceforums is a large close knit car community based in Australia with a handful of ‘ex-pats’ residing internationally, totalling 1000+ members. It’s a community with a strong interest in motorsport with many members competing in various categories at a grass roots level with some at a national level and international.
An overwhelming majority of members watched your story on ABC on Tuesday night and after discussion felt compelled to write to you.
We, as a group, would like you to know that your achievements and success will be long remembered and revered. For many of us you have been an icon of motorsport, and source of inspiration. Your involvement with the sport is longer than most of as have been alive, We are incredibly proud of the huge impact you, a fellow Australian has made on the sport . Pushing your car over the line to take the WDC at the Sebring GP in '59 is an example of both your guts and everything that we love about motorsport and Australia. Watching this footage in black and white struck many close to heart as a display of true Australian grit and determination. We doubt that any of the current crop of F1 superstars would have a tenth of the ‘balls’and grit it took to achieve what you have in your racing career, achievements that to this day are un matched. An era when men were men.
We are all proud to be able to say that we, like you, are Australian motorsport supporters and will continue to be so while we can.
We, as a group, would like to thank you for your involvement, efforts and accomplishments, and wish you the best for your future.
With kind regards, and much respect,

We doubt that any of the current crop of F1 superstars would have a tenth of the ‘balls’ and grit it took to achieve what you have in your racing career, achievements that to this day are un matched. An era when men were men.
We are all proud to be able to say that we, like you, are Australian motorsport supporters and will continue to be so while we can.
We, as a group, would like to thank you for your involvement, efforts and accomplishments, and wish you the best for your future.
With kind regards, and much respect,

I will leave it till monday arvo, and then I will get it printed on some nice stock and get it sent away (have to find his address too).
the following is a response to an email I sent around asking people to give me their names for the letter. The reply is from one of my good friends dad charlie (My mate died of a heart attack at 28, and we still keep in touch with the family, in fact charlie races the escort with no beer with my occasionally, and has owned more than a few quick cars back in the day). I thought some of you may appreciate it:
You can put my name down. I have never met Jack but have followed his career with avid interest.I was lucky enough to sit next to Phil Irving on night at a Sunshine rotary meeting and was apparently the first person in the club to appreciate Phils place in Australian motor sport history The skunk works for Repco Brabham was in an old shed in Braybrook and I was fascinated by the insiders view on the Brabham era.As I was a petrol head I think Phil was relieved that he could converse with some one in the club about motor sport. We spoke of his role(Chief Engineer) for Repco .He was impressed that I had detailed knowledge of the history of himself and Jacks career. My father and brother had a garage and my brother had raced alongside the likes of Bob Jane Norm Beechey (whom I dug a tennis court for)
_another story. We also spoke of Repco Holden Heads for the old grey motor and his pride and joy the Vincent motor bike which he developed. We also spoke about the Redex trials Of the fifties.I was indebted to Modern Motor and wheels magazines. I will never forget that night it was like being in presence of royalty except better.Getting back to Jack I have seen early footage of him( Movietone News when it was current) and I have always thought Jack Brabham represented Australia more humble than the other Aussie Hero at the time Don Bradman.I was lucky enough to live through those early days and shared the joy and passion of our first World Champion in Grand Prix and to repeat the performance with a car he built himself.I think he even raced in the Indyr in the US.

A mate took this at the indy museum 2 years ago, this is the blurb that came with the pic
I thought I new more about Jack Brabham than most motorsport fans, having seen his 1961 Cooper that was entered in the Indianapolis 500 first hand a couple of years ago(attached). I did not untill this week know of his heroics at Sebring. I cannot believe this isnt replayed endlessly in the media to remind us all what can happen if we never give up. A truly inspirational story.

125 names and 3 car clubs... not too shabby
Dear Sir Jack,
After watching you on Australian story on the ABC, a few people decided it would be appropriate for us to get together and let you know that you are not forgotten in Australia. We, as a group, would like you to know that your achievements and success will be long remembered and revered.
For many of us you have been an icon of motorsport, and source of inspiration. Your involvement with the sport is longer than most of as have been alive, and we acknowledge the huge impact you have had on the sport. Pushing your car over the line to take the WDC at the Sebring GP in '59 is an example of both your guts and everything that we love about motorsport and Australia. We doubt that any of the current crop of F1 superstars would have a tenth of the ‘balls’ it took to achieve what you have in your racing career, achievements that to this day are un matched.
