Hey guys..

I've changed all my rotors to the new RDA Zinc coated ones.
They are slotted and dimpled.

Are they meant to feel like you have no brakes until the run in is over??
Does the pad need to penetrate the zinc coating before they start to work normally?

Did you wipe off the protective coating before fitment?

We used to get this with the Chain Gang rotors for the bikes, they came zinc spun, what we did was cruise around with the brakes on for a kay or so to get them nice and hot so the pads cleaned the swept area nicely. Dropped pads out for a quick wire brush and then they were good to go.

They were dry as the zinc was the protective coating on the rotors...

I might have to ride the brakes on the dyno as it is also a new motor...

Zinc coating is bullshit, just a sales gimmick.

as far as i know its not a sales gimmick but just a protection thing for pre-sales storage... maybe not necessary but because the coating is made to wear off i don't think anybody use it as a reason to buy them

Actually, RDA promote them by saying that they are good for backing trailers back into the water (boats) because they wont rust!

LOL..

I just got them because I didn't want rust on the rotors and also that they are slotted and dimpled , not drilled

But obviously the zinc coating will have a different coefficient of friction to the iron underneath, plus the zinc could get embedded in the pads and change their operating characteristics.

i was under the impression the zinc was only a thin layer on the outer surface, therefore it would wear through this pretty quick and then there would be no zinc left on the pad surface soon afterwards either? if that worried then i'd break them in initially with some shit pads, then clean the disc surface and throw on the better ones.... tho i somehow doubt it would matter much - could always be wrong tho!

The white zinc shit is just for storage. As was said, it'll come off eventually, so it won't be protecting them for long. Just scuff them up before installing. I wouldn't be driving on them with a good set of pads until they're spotless.
