View Full Version : GF's new Effy build.

11-02-10, 03:32 PM
Well we finally bit the bullet and decided to do something about the GF's 2wd, LWB f100.

So we bought a SWB 4x4 donor.

Big plan. Hopfuly it all comes together without too many dramas.

New truck is a 77 4x4 short wheel base. Comes with a 351 and 4speed. These wer ethe ebay pics from when she bought it.

The 302 2wd long wheel base she has now that we'll be using as the main donor.

We're looking to do a small lift of the cab to fit he 33s, then i'll make up a tube flat tray for her. Something like these I think, but with some kind of rear wheel arch/mud flap setup to keep the plod off her back a bit.

If i can get it too look a bit like the red one in design she'll be a happy camper :)

Pics from the first depot as it sits now. Panels are in alot better condition that I imagined so I may just flatten and paint these instead of swapping the cab with the black LWB.

Hopefully the motor is as good as claimed. If so there is actually very little work to be done. :)

Can't wait to start attacking it.

awesome dude - i have a thing for big fuck-trucks

11-02-10, 04:07 PM
I'll be honest, I was hoping you were going to turn the lwb styleside into a 4X4.

Should be a cool project anyway. This is my favourite F-truck shape.

11-02-10, 06:29 PM
I was hoping it was going to be slammed. Oh well, nothing wrong going the other way, looks like it's going to be fun.

11-02-10, 10:32 PM
cool project,

Hey, this is for your missus? If I recall she is tiny? Too funny.

12-02-10, 11:02 AM
So when is China going to start turning out reproduction cabs for these fucking shit boxes?

Panel fit could not be worse than Ford made made them straight off the factory production line.

While engines/diffs/chassis on these go forever the cabs are almost all fucked nowdays. I was serious about getting an F350 for towing duties but i can't find a good one at a reasonable price.

Dad still has his F100 (77 model i recall) and i have a bunch of hawt clevo parts. If only i could get a decent cab we would do something with it. The rust problems are just awful but then ther is the lack of handling and brakes and no mod cons what so ever.

I know of about 8 'good' to 'recoverable' cab just in katherine alone. Most of the better ones are gal and are found on the ambulance varient F series.

i reckon you need to look further than around the coast. my '77 f-banger has a gal cab and has been in the dry bits of sa and nsw all its life. the paint looks shit, but the cab is rust free.

12-02-10, 07:46 PM
That is a big banger.

I dunno if I can comment further till we see pics of the new missus :D

12-02-10, 07:50 PM
And I mean that in the nicest possible way dude :D

Turbo 351

I've always been a huge fan of 77 F100's. Reminds me of my old project. It started as a 77 F100 2wd LWB tray, then was made into a SWB styleside prerunner sort of thing, then was made into a SWB/4WD big lift -can't find pics of it in this stage :-(

Anyway, here are some pics of it at various points.

Then as 4WD

14-02-10, 01:33 PM
Pre-runner stylez FTW.

14-02-10, 03:40 PM
EL dash FTW

14-02-10, 07:40 PM
fuck you're cool turbo351

14-02-10, 07:54 PM
Awesome dude. Tell me, what do I need to ask for to find that front/grill? As apposed to the one we have on the GF black LWB which is all I seem to be able to find.

14-02-10, 08:07 PM
excuse my ignorance but what is a "prerunner"?

Also what are some good yank sites for these and online parts?

Wife has just told me she always liked these, so there is a possibilty of one in the future as a tow car.

14-02-10, 10:38 PM
Prerunners are like the sweet desert racer style trucks AFAIK.

15-02-10, 12:35 AM
You really dont fuck around with any of your cars do you Glen?

That truck is tough as fark.

15-02-10, 03:59 PM
looks like a 78 grille to me?

lmc truck in the states is the place for parts! Evry nut and bolt available by model :D

Well a weekend's worth and it's about ready to start recieving donor parts.

Striping the wiring, lines, hoses etc...

Passenger panel has no bog so it will be getting painted and used instead of the slightly repaired black one. Also the 4x4 trans cover to save from having to cut the xfer case lever hole out.

Sits level and the spings feel great, if a little ridged.

Not much worth saving in the interior unfortunatly.

The de-cabbing process. The PO just bolted the front guards on for transport so they didn't like being lifted too much lol. I couldn't bothered taking them all off for it just o be scrapped anyway.

It's going to sit there until I know that I don't need anything else from it.

Just before firing up the 351. Started instantly, no smoke or misses and sounds the goods.

Then we just spent a bit of time on the wire-wheels cleaning up the chasis abit before a coat of black.

Next up is to hang the exhaust and weld in a bit of chasis bracing. Then we start moving parts over from the black F100.

09-03-10, 04:32 PM
What you need to do is bolt some sort of seat arrangement onto the chassis and go do some skids as is for epic funnies :D

09-03-10, 04:34 PM
Oh believe me, me and her old man (pictured) talked about it more than once. The general consence was that "it was too fucking hot" to do work that wasn't required to finish the job lol

09-03-10, 05:44 PM
should have done it with no seats then, standing on the chassis, bit of string to operate the throttle...

15-03-10, 09:54 AM
Well another weekends worth of work done.

Got the fuel tank cleaned up, painted and installed. Moved the good rear brakes from the LWB to the SWB. Then spent the rest of the arvo.night swapping the cab over.

A few things in the cab swap slowed me right down though. Since the steering setups are so different, I had to salvage the shafts and tube from the old cab. It took a while as all the bolts were rusted to buggery.

The second hickup came just as I was lowering the cab onto the 4x4 chasis, and I noticed there was section of heavy bracing in front for the crossmember that was going to prevent the radiator (and therefore the cab) from sitting where it was supposed to. A combination of raising the radiator slightly, an oxy (until it ran out) and a 9inch sorted it fairly quickly and the cab droped right on. It was a bit of a pain adjusting it the 45mm it need to line the bolt holes up but eventually it was all on and bolted up.

After hooking the 'new' steering column up and bolting it all in place I called it a night.

Some pics.

Not sure what I was doing here. I think i was removing the old hand brake.

Running the strap under the whole cab like this just wasn't working for us and wouldn't pick the rear of the cab up.

So it was back to the old wraping the roof style. No damage so it was all good.

Making it a family affair I decided that the GF's little brother should be the one to cut the big ass brace out.

...Then he got the shits and got his old man to hit it with the oxy lol. Much faster. Until it ran out and he had to go back to grinding lol

All down and bolted in.

Thanks it for the weekend. Now ill spend the arvos hooking stuff up and start on the tray.

15-03-10, 12:15 PM
What was wrong with the old pick up?

15-03-10, 12:37 PM
Too long for the tracks we use and (more importantly) only 2WD.

15-03-10, 04:01 PM
I just destroyed my 77 SWB 2WD chassis with a 4" grinder :(

bit sad, but onwards and upwards!

16-03-10, 09:34 PM
Just a small update this arvo.

Decided that the 33s were a little too girly. So we have decided to lift the cab as originally planned and fit in some 35s.

This is the cab at the standard hight.

These are the lifting blocks we machined up for the lift. A little overkill but i wanted to play on the lathe :)

The GF spent the day cleaning up the cab. She got the floor all sanded and painted and fit the dash and speedo cable back up. The bench seat is prept and being sent to Darwin to be re-spung and upholstered.

Work has also begun on the tray. We have been given the bed off a retired landcruiser firefighting unit to use as a base.

All the important clearences and measurments are spot on. We just need to spend a bit of time clearing the bar work and tanks off, and make up a flare arrangment for the rear tires as the tray is a bit narrow for the 35s. Hopefully it turns out looking alright. If not, we scrap it and start from scratch as planned.

17-03-10, 12:14 PM
hey dude, out of interest, what is happening to the old tub?

EDIT - oh yeah, I have a flat tray frame off a 77 SWB F100 that I no longer require :D

17-03-10, 06:58 PM
LWB tub will proably sit in the yard until someone wants it or we get sick of it and scrap it.

Send up a pic of your flat frame :)

Spent this arvo lifting the body and got the front 35s fitted up and they fit great.

Edo pic.

Finally starting to look like a 4x4.

17-03-10, 07:43 PM
Fuck that looks tuff..

18-03-10, 10:47 PM
Didn't g et a whole lot done today due to having to work on my car. But i did get a slightly better pic and one showing the clearences in the front.

19-03-10, 08:57 AM
I'll take a pic of it this arvo, it's freakin heavy though!

what sorta nick is the tub in?

20-03-10, 06:21 PM
Cab is relativly good. A few bit of rust coming p under the paint near the rear wheel arches. Needs a good rub back and respray to fix some crows feet etc.

Spent to day hacking at the tray and fitting the rear 35s.

Still more to go. This is how we ended up this arvo mocked up. Will still come down about another 5cm. Also all the box bar work will be going and replaced with a decent roll-bar.

20-03-10, 09:23 PM
should be able to stack some nice hay bales on that.

18-04-11, 11:43 AM
Dun dun dunnnn...

18-04-11, 07:24 PM
Slowly starting to take shape.

18-04-11, 10:30 PM
Unreal work but why didnt you just stick the ford tub back on it?

Mike Lowrrryyy
18-04-11, 10:36 PM
Nice I want a F truck now.

18-04-11, 11:01 PM
Unreal work but why didnt you just stick the ford tub back on it?

Don't have one. The first truck is a long wheel base, and rust free mid wheel base tubs are very rare.

Nopics and I have agreed that if a good tub shows up we'll use it.

19-04-11, 09:16 AM
Good news from teh US today.

Power steering for these rigs, especially the 4wds, is a real cunt to get over here. IF you can find one, its fucking expensive. And there is no clear how-to as far as using aftermarket or donors from other cars.

After sending a bunch of pics to people who know shit, it looks like a previous owner has done all the hardwork for me for power steering. This truck has been modded to take a LHD 2wd manual steering box.

Which means it will take a LHD 2wd power steering box, which can be had from the US for under $400. :)

All I can assume, is that someones rigged up 2wd LHD power steering to it, then yanked it out to replace it with manual steering to sell or something.

25-04-11, 09:24 PM
Not much cosmetic done today, other than the flares.

Clutch is done and brake system is done. Will give it a good flush/bleed tomorrow and fire it up.

26-04-11, 05:41 PM
vroom vroomm

08-05-11, 06:01 PM
Blew he old clutch line apart last week so fucked around this weekend kitting salvaged master and slave cylinders and making up a new line.

I got the shits with doing it all though so since it is her truck Nopics gave me a bit more of a hand.

"We need the slave cylinder out of that wreck..."

Then when we got home, "You hook up the new clutch line while I stay in the nice cool shed kitting the master cyl.."

She's a gem :)

Surely this qualifies as "quality time" spent together.

14-05-11, 12:15 AM
Lol Droopz, fucking nice work.

I think Pom is feeling the love for his LWB 84 F100 ( 6cyl 2WD for the moment) again after viewing this thread.

Shame the view wouldnt be the same if he got me crouched in the engine bay.

16-06-11, 01:32 PM
Spent last weekend out the property camping/fishing/shooting so we took the effy out for a bit of a test run.

Went like a champ. A bit big to get to some of the gorges and falls since it has zero cab protection and i didnt want to rub it up against any rocks.

Now I just need to get someone to finish the tray off properly and get some rego sorted.

11-05-12, 01:15 PM
fuk this is fat! i want one
