View Full Version : Elektra the Valiant - 13's for $1300 project

MRMOPARMAN
26-12-10, 01:39 PM
so ive had this val lying around that i didnt know what to do with it, so im glad dennis thought this up!

meet elektra..

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_003.jpg

my aunty bought her for $200 and gave it too me for my 16?th birthday.
shes a little bit worse for wear these days. dodgy electricals, floor pan, rear quarters and c pillar rust etc etc. however should make a good light platform to do this challenge on, and give me a bit of motorvation to actually do something with it!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_004.jpg

these are the 2 cars that will be donating various bits for the project. the VE will be donating the interior (rwc items, so $0) and column($$?).

the CM is donating the 265 hemi, bw35, front end, front and rear brakes. average cost of a CM is <$100, so to be safe ill say $200 unless someone disagrees?

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_006.jpg

heres the 265 in question.. pulled it apart for a 'freshen' years ago, found it had recently been reco'd.. thats about as far as i got. nows the perfect opportunity to throw a cam in it :)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_007.jpg

bw35.. hopefully it will last a few passes. if not, i have a bw 4 speed i can use, but will require a custom tailshaft, and will add on $450 to the budget.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_005.jpg

cain 4bbl and 465 holley. recently reco'd i think. picked up for $150 at the bendigo swap meet this year. i think the 465 may be a little small depending on cam and auto stall point, so i may have to sell it and replace with 600 vac sec.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_008.jpg

cm duel outlet exhaust. similar to type used on VG pacers, should be easy to make a cheap shit exhaust with this. hope it will flow enough, otherwise some rb20 T3's will be adapted to them.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_010.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_012.jpg

1 valiant diff disassembled and ready for parts to be thrown at it, and top pic is a 2 pinion fairlane LSD.

this is where most of my trouble/expense will be. will need bearings and shit. also the fairlane LSD is 28 spline, so ill either need to buy 25 spline cones to put in it, and redrill the axles to suit late val/ford stud pattern, or ill need to get some late val axles shortened and resplined to 28 spline. also CM drum backing plates will need to be reshaped to suit VG axle flange.
oh and i left my old 4.11's out in the rain, so ill need to buy more.

diff expense so far - $60 for LSD.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20101225_013.jpg

depending on how quick everyone gets, i may have to go turbo. so above we have an EMS stinger v4 i bought at the bendigo swap meet a few years ago. cost me $120.. i shit you not! may need a repair though, as i havent been able to get it running yet.

have a few EA CFI injection setups i may be able to bodge up, all freebies.

a sard reg and duel stage boost controller. with compliments from RB30 POWER (thanks mate btw!!) cant remember how much i paid but they were fucking cheap.

so thats where im at atm.. without turbo shit, total cost to date approx $610

PS - how's the bonnet mould - want to sell it?

Edit - Cam if you do want to sell the 465 then please let me know, very keen.

eyman, see the wrecked valiant thread on H6p, then you'll reliase why its a donor only car ;( shame since its body no1, and the first val i had on the road when i was 18!

the bonnet mould WAS perfect, but the cunt that towed it after the accident ripped it off (litterally) and hung it on the wall of the smash repair shop.. fuck i was livered when i saw that!

Any bits you need towards this?

MRMOPARMAN
26-12-10, 03:45 PM
at this stage ill need:

4.11 pintara gears
25spline lsd cones
maybe a 600 vac sec holley
engine gasket kit and id like to throw cam bearings at the 265 even though it doesnt really need them
some sort of fan shround to mount a thermo
tyres
blackboard paint
various gaskets/seals/bearings
bog
oh and hot cam, lifters, valve springs, and maybe roller rockers.
thats what i can think of off the top of my head

BW to BW tailshaft should be no where near 450 bucks. Just get one close enough from a wrecker and I paid $130 (I think) to shorten/balance

This will obiously work in the EA aswell?

do you know of any other factory stalls that will take it higher?

easy enough to shorten yourself, scribe a straight line along the length, use pipe cutter to cut the section out, carefully set up on blocks with scribed line aligned, and tack in at least 4 places, check for straightness and weld

i probably didnt word that very good.. the borg warner 4speed conversion (minus tailshaft) was $450.. then id need a 727 yoke ($100+ new) and and then a shorten. so it would end up half the challenge $$ just in the box. bw 3speeds are free usually, and jmac can build me a tougher one for not alot.:h5:

im not sure bout EAs coz they ran a bw51.

google borg warner high stall. some of the Xx falcon guys reckon the 2.6 sigmas give about 2600rpm, and the 2L give about 4000rpm. then theres a few pommy cars like triumphs and rovers had em too.. according to wiki

thanks for the offer mate.. ill only be revving the engine to about 5500rpm though, so a 4k convertor is a little bit high.

i am on the lookout for a 2.6l convertor though :)

jmac

Thing to be aware of though - unlike practically all others, the valiants only have a flat 'paddle' for a flex plate. The ring gear for the starter motor on vals is actually welded to the convertor itself. That makes it harder/costlier to adapt other bw convertors for the job (wheras it is relatively a piece of piss to do amongst other different brands that utilised the bw autos)

About the best way I could describe the bw 35, bw 40 and bw 51 is that they are like the evolution of the same transmission. most of the 'consumables' (the bands, the clutch discs) are identical throughout. The later models (amongst other things) had bigger diameter main shafts, so you have to use them as matched sets with the drums/clutch assemblies as the holes through their centres is to suit said shaft diameters.

Later models also have extra support for the low/rev band servo/piston - a great idea because it's one of the first things to break in any bw auto that is given harsh treatment.

There's other minor differences, but in the simplest terms the go is to get your original car's bw35 take the output shaft, governor and bellhousing, and fit them into a later model casing and use all later model internals save for the output shaft etc (the ones that essentially need to be there to mate it to your engine, and thankfully they happen to not be parts that have any detrimental effect on the longevity)

They still aren't bulletproof, but you basically just make em as strong as you can and then configure the engine and driver accordingly. When the 4 speed autos came out on the fords, they initially had some reliability issues, and there were more than a few taxis retrofitted with the bw51 auto. Even if it was only the same longevity (and in the early days the 3 speed outlasted the 4. though I suspect it was driver abuse or something as it seemed only taxis this retrofit ever happened to), it was less than half the cost to reco each time.

yesterday and today i went to the oldies and cleaned up the old girl, as shes been used as a shed for other val parts for years.
found a bloke that will do the floorpan cheaply for me (i think), so i started stripping out the interior and looking for rust.

This is the first LPG contender. I'd like to know how you go getting the turbo DIY gas install certified. I had pondered this at times. What are you doing for a gearbox?

MRMOPARMAN
10-01-11, 05:25 PM
well ill have to find a gas installer that will let me do most of it myself. it wont be turbo'd until after the gas is put on. ive already got most/all the gas gear to go, i have the 4bbl manifold and the twin outlet exhaust manifold + exhaust.

best thing about having a car this old, is no emission laws to worry about, heaters, rearview mirrors, seatbelts etc were optional, so i can strip all that out and still be legal, unlike them crappy VN's EAs etc :p downside is because body panels are so hard to get for these now, id be fricken stupid to take the bracing out of everything. so ill probably end up the heaviest contender

i just need a holley baseplate, then ill put as much as i can together. then trailer it to the gas installer. i have to get it rego'd first, so thats the priority. then i can start sorting out where all the turbo stuff will go, mod tanks/lines etc for more flow then start tuning!

as for the auto, JMAC has kindly teamed up with me and is waiting on me to provide a valiant BW35, and an EA falcon BW51. he reckons he can make a decent auto out of them, and after following his posts for 10+ years.. i dont doubt him!

got another present in the mail today:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20110110_001.jpg

then i had a brain fart.. since the mixer is before the baseplate.. when its on boost and i back off, gas is likely to go through the blow off valve.
looks like i might have to hook the blowoff valve to the exhaust to get the hektik dose flames out the exhaust lol

This is the first declared LPG contender. I'd like to know how you go getting the turbo DIY gas install certified. I had pondered this at times.

fixed.

Gas is a great idea on this build. Congrats. Honestly, an LPG system is not hard to install at home as long as all reasonable precautions are taken and you know what you are doing. In that regard I have no doubt MrMoparman does.

My tip as for diy installs is to avoid using a copper service line. All the problems with dodgy installs stem from people not doing a proper flare on the fittings nor testing for leaks. The flex braided service line isn't cheap but there is no reason you can't cut to size and screw on the fittings at home just as well as a certified installer. If anything, on your own car you will take much more care than some monkey just tek screwing things willy nilly or running hoses wherever. A little thought put into where you will run things will yield a neat looking result.

I will ask someone on Aus Rotary for the details of their gas installer mate. I am pretty sure they are in Bendigo, did 3/4 job at home then took it to be complianced. This might really help you out.

i just quit work and should get a payout so i can finish buying the shit i need to get everything done.

so we found a little bit more rust than i thought!

so due to massive time constraints we will be using the spare floorpan for the rear floorpan sections, then steel in a can, for the rest.

hell i might even decide to not register it, do the whole gas system myself, then maybe rego it later.

body should be done this weekend, paint maybe next weekend. on 2 weeks holiday after wednesday whilst changing jobs

jmac
28-01-11, 04:21 AM
That's 'mostly' fuck all rust. The C pillars - no worries there. The floorpans - sorta to be expected. It's usually because of a leaking windscreen seal but can also be related to rust/holes in teh plenum area too. So if they look 'perfect' I'd strongly suggest throwing on some small magnets (small and weak ones that 'barely' stick against bare clean metal, but won't stick when you place a few sheets of paper between them and the fridge or whatever. Then place them (without paper) onto the plenum - you might find it's mostly made of fibreglass or filler of some sort. If it isn't - massive win.

Forgot to ask - have you had a look at the chassis rail around the steering box? Any cracks? (if there is, hold off on a repair sleeve. Sometimes a better job can be done without them)

MRMOPARMAN
28-01-11, 09:10 AM

so i may be out, had a cunting shit day today.

got woken up this morning by the missus to find the front and back of our place flooded again. turns out theres a storm water drain just behind our joint that cant handle quick heavy rain (3 times in 5 months) which then the excess water washes out the back of mine and my neighbours places. washes mulch into my storm drain and blocks the grille, then floods the back and front of my joint.

also the roof has started leaking alot worse than previously.. already had a roofie lined up, but now i have to repaint and maybe fix the plaster in the lounge room (again).

so then we went to cook lunch, and the stove has shat itself.

then i went to go to my oldies to drop off my tools, and the fucking landie caught on fire! got it out fairly quickly, but now have an insurance claim to sort out.. and im fucking itchy as fuck from the fire extinuisher powder in my face.

will have to get in contact with jmac soon to sort some shit out :(

Got to love the paint brush.

Did some time cruising sydney in a VG sedan painted in black house paint (painted by previous owner). My mate bought it first as his first Val after seeing mine and how easy it was to make them go fast. We fitted a 265 with extractors 4bbl and a 904 torqueflite. Very quick off the lights. Later on I bought the car from him but didn't change anything. I never put it down the quarter but I remember he did. Only ran 14s but with an awesome 60-ft time (1.6sec from memory). We could never work it out.

Yep, it was blistering fast out of the hole, then really didn't do much. Weird car.

It's the long boot overhang, relatively more rear wheel downforce vs overall weight of the car (which is light by modern family sized car standards) Beyond the 60 ft, you can still do great power to weight with a hemi 6. Then around 100mph it's about aerodynamic drag co-efficient and frontal area, where something like an xw with a 351 has about the same frontal area, similar CD, but more horsepower, and they'll (unfortunately) pull away.

Incidentally this is why the chargers were competitive with the phase 3 as far as 1/4mile times go (and I won't get into that dick pulling argument, they were both pretty similar). because the charger was lighter it still had decent power to weight (and arguably with a good driver a decent launch) but around 100mph, the ford had the same total drag but about 100bhp more (in realistic terms, not what they advertised in the day). Since they ere both running around 100mph at the end of the 1/4, it's at that 'cross over' point and they are similar up to that point. But down conrod, or any track where they got well over 100mph, the fords had a big advantage.

Sorry for the long winded stuff, but basically the good 60ft times aren't mystery at all :)

Unfortunately Ian Sutherthand had a severe case of secret squirrel-itis.

All I can tell you is that it has around 0.480 lift, but he did admit the cam was patterned off the old B&M blower cams and it was the same cam profile he ran in all his blown engines. Finding the old B&M specs is just about impossible these days, but guys reckon they're very similar to the Edelbrock RPM Performer cams (234/244@0.50).

It was ground by Watson Cams in Sydney to the specs that Ian supplied. He had the hemi cam made up for a guy that he made a hemi six B&M kit for (he only made one), but the guy never came back for the cam so I bought it. I used it with the turbo kit for a while, but it never really performed right with that cam so I got a custom Surecam stick, which worked much better with the turbo.

jmac
15-02-11, 06:33 PM
I'll tell you what, if it has 235 duration at 0.050" but only .480 lift, It's a fairly 'lazy' profile for a hemi lifter diameter, hemi cam base circle, and even more so considering the 1.7:1 rocker ratio :)

Do you happen to have the specs for the surecam by any chance?

And now I've totally confused my self - is it the surecam for sale, or the previous one?

The previous one is for sale. The other cam, the Surecam turbo grind is still in the engine.

I know what you're saying about lazy. After all it's based off a chevy grind so no surprise it's not aggressive like a proper chrysler cam would be.

I have the Surecam specs here somewhere but I've got the bub on my lap at the moment which makes it hard to get up and move around.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20110410_007.jpg

last night i started pulling the diff and leaves. she's just sitting there waiting to be rolled out and the new diff swung in. also brought home a spare BA 16" rim to test offsets.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20110410_005.jpg

also i loosened the radiator and started nutting out the intercooler placement. and fucked off the battery tray as its roughly where the turbo will sit. the old bracket looks like a handy jigger to brace the turbo/exhaust from.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20110410_004.jpg

then after 2 hrs sleep last night i got up and trundled off to the castlemaine swap meet. must have been delirious with the lack of sleep coz i went sick..

bought a battery box, front and rear spring eye bushes for the leaves, and a 650 double pumper holley :)

then i bought a small portable arc welder + gear bag, and a 'working' impco L convertor.

so cost list so far on items allocated for this car
car $200
cooler $40
650 holley (unmodified atm) $170
bushes $60
LSD 2.92 rear diff $90 iirc

total $560

major items still to buy

auto overhaul kit
slicks (if i cant borrow some)

so i still havent bought a turbo kit yet, and missed a cheap BW51 rebuild kit on ebay yesterday.. so hopefully they relist it.

last tuesday i finally pressed the bushes into the rear springs and started test fitting the VJ diff tonight.

found out the axle tubes are bigger than VG's so im going to have to rape one of my parts cars to get the right spring/shock mount and U bolts. cable tied them in for now and tried the BA rim on it. it works but will sit a tad to far in. will try an EF rim and my GTR rims to see if they fit better.

ok success!

GTR rims fit almost perfectly. at worst ill need a 5mm spacer which i can make at work. also ill have to machine down the axle hub to suit the GTR rims, which i should be able to do at trade school. it will also give me an excuse to put new axle bearings in and fit CM rear brakes to the diff :)

oh and the GTR has semi's on the front so i dont wont need to beg/steal/borrow/buy some slicks for this!!

so for future referance, anyone fitting a VH/CM diff to a VE/VG will need +30 offset rims on the rear.

so as you can tell, nothing much has happened with this.

have most of the rear brake parts, just have to get the handbrake cables off the old diff, then assemble that and fill diff with oil.

got the CM front end out of the old wreck i have, but it needs discs and bushes. so rather than spend $600+ i thought i could try fitting VH- front drums to the existing brakes. then i realised they are non existant. might just leave the early stud pattern on the front and put hubcaps over it and see if the club inspector notices.

bought a KKR660 for it. guy is getting postage for me on monday.

will get a turbo flange gasket off a mate this week some time, then i can start making my own J pipe setup at work.

man, im so ashamed ive done fuck all to this in a year and a half!

anyways, i havent done nothing at all..

got the diff mounted, its not great though, had to pull the leafs out to get it to line up with the spring pads. so now all that pressure has squished the bushes. not sure how thats going to work. will suck it and see.

also got some wheel cyls for the back brakes and chucked them on.. and thats all ive done. now the problem is the rubber caps on the cylinders have perished, so need to look for some more before i can finish the rear end off.

however i have been buying shit.

first off, the turbo and wastegate. KKR660, and synapse wastegate. wastegate was $100, and i think the turbo was around $250 (i cant find the PM's about it)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20140104_215723_zpscee30d21.jpg

got a BW51 auto at the shepparton swap meet the year before last. IIRC i got it for $35! also stumbled on some freshly machined VH front drums for $20.. fucking score!! so will have matching stud patterns now.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20140104_193443_zps7bdeea08.jpg

got some carb hats, one is a proper polished up carb hat, but its not the proper thick ones for boost, so im not sure how it will go (and not alot of meat to oring the base) but couldnt leave it there for $35. also got a LPG type hat that i figure i can cut up and make work, that was $10. oh and scored a carter low pressure fuel pump at the bendi swap meet. cant remember how much that was??
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20140104_215858_zpsf3f0f4be.jpg

then as per the ignition thread elsewhere here, 1jzracing kindly sold me a 2nd hand megajolt cheap. will need to convert it from TPS to MAP, but thats like a 1/2hr job to do.

Dimi supplied a surge tank for $50, and Gruelius a smaller noname wastegate for $25ish.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y75/MRMOPARMAN/project%20val/20140104_204716_zps7ee80069.jpg

and just won an 044 bosch on egay for $51, should be in the mail soon.

so plans have changed slightly, now the comp is over i have shitloads more time to get this done. and my knoledge of carbies/boost/tuning/E85 is basically zero, so im going to try and get club reg on the sucker so i can do some on the road tuning. should end up cheaper than paying $50 every weekend for a drag race, and spending the entire time working on it in the pits!

so yeah, i want to go E85 now, as i think it will be a fair bit kinder to the pistons, and thus will allow me more boost, power etc. also i wont have to use the intercooler now, so i wont have to hack the rad support panel for piping.
now having a gay 3 speed manual will be beneficial for road tuning, so ill worry about converting to auto at a later date.

so basically its shitloads of little things to do. fittings, gauged, tools, piping, fuel hoses, etc. already have a techedge a/f meter with logging. will attempt to make a knockboard so i know whats going on ign wise.. hopefully the rattles that is a hemi 6 are at a different frequency to pinging, otherwise im fucked!

will need to buy jet drillbits. theres a fuckload of mods to do to make a holley blowthrough, and ill be flying blind for the most part. there is writeups for boosting, writeups for e85/alky fuels...but not both! almost half thinking of making the cunt drawthrough.
hopefully the 044 will be enough for fuel, otherwise ill have to buy a VL pump to go with it. luckily theres room for 2 in the surge.
the beauty of the megajolt (apart from perfect timing and strong spark thats completely programmable) is it also has 4 RPM outputs, so i can use it to trigger pumps and shit to keep the flow down if need be. if i only need 1 pump ill probably use a val ballast resistor to run the pump at 9v until i need full flow.

next big spend.. getting the windows and interior put back in it, and 3/8 alloy fuel line for feed and return.

Yep, it will cost a bit more, but I would need to buy a bigger fuel system anyways, so wouldnt cost that much more. Tank I think would be ok if hot tanked clean. The main thing Im thinking with e85 is it should be kinder to the motor. As im sure you know first hand, unopened hemis dont like too much boost. Hard to keep the headgaskets in them. From the reading ive done is roughly 10psi on petrol. I reckon I could get away with 15psi on corn juice.

So yeah I havent done much with this. Come into some cash though so could probably buy the rest of the bits I need. Just hanging to get back into racing and buying tools, and getting sidetracked by the turdness and the wifes mini lol.

Go the wreckers and find a cheap late model tank and mount it in the boot. Old school steel tanks and E85 aren't the best mix, they tend to rust heavily in the seams.
