So this is our entry.
Bog stock VN V6 auto with boot rust.

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x289/SpamDragon/Red%20VN/IMG_0589.jpg

I swapped the HZ ute for it. Ute didn't sell on ebay twice (winning bidders dicked me around both times) so it was on it's way for scrap when a fella said "hey do you want to swap it for a VN?". Scrap value was about $100 so that's what I'm claiming the VN is worth.

It's getting a diet.

I started doing this before the whole 13's for $1300 came about and I'm fucked if I'm putting all that shit back in there.

Original intention was a shit load of NOS but if you cunts decide NOS is out then I'll find a turbo that can go where the CAT used to.

So far it has cost:

$36 for a fan belt
$100 for a set of 4.11's
$90 for a mini spool from ebay I bought like 5 years ago, but I may just weld the diff.
$200 for the nitrous kit (I think - may have been $150. Seriously don't remember). May be irrelevant if nitrous is not allowed.
$30 for the hotdog
$10 for the downpipe exhaust
$195 for the stall converter (Guy was shitty haha his offsider fucked up the ad as it was meant to be $100 more.)
$40 Corvette servo
$50 carton of beer (EEPROM reprogram)
$70 shift kit
$150 extractors (I think?)
some other fiddly shit I don't remember. (spark plugs/tek screws)

Running total: $950ish

**EDIT**
Best time to date: 12.36@108 on NOS (Uncle) and 14.7@91 N/A (Jim).

You had best go and drop the price of that mushroom by $100.00

mushroom no longer for sale. I ate it.

13s for $1300 with the turbo then 12s for $1450 with the NOS kit??

Saw that! Doubt it'd come in under budget tho as he hasn't stated a price on it. Doubt he'd sell it for $600.

13s for $1300 with the turbo then 12s for $1450 with the NOS kit??

That's my thought too. Or if it isnt eligable for the 13's for $1300 I'll just have to run 12's for $800

not convinced a supercharger from a 2.0L will pump the 10psi needed on a 3.8L. And $800 plus $550 = $1300 not to mention it still needs tyres and shit.

shame about the bootrust as that looks like an otherwise half decent vn!!
cut and polish the paint before you send it to nitrous nirvana :)

[TUFFVQ]
27-12-10, 01:31 AM
This appeals to my interests.
I have a brand new china t3/t4 turbo sitting on my bookshelf for this if you want? Can confirm specs and get photos if you're interested. Dunno what it's worth but I don't really have much use for it.

Jim
27-12-10, 09:56 AM
PM sent.
Jay also has the megasquirt I sold him bloody ages ago he's offered to sell me back so the ECU problem may have been solved changed.

It looks ok in photos but the paint is fucked and the driver's door is dented where it has been opened into the guard at some stage. But yeah, it'll get a cleanup.

Uncle (Steamboat) is going to be co-piloting and co-building but he's on holidays at the moment.

Jim
27-12-10, 09:56 AM
fuck this double posting shit

ALLMTR
27-12-10, 10:11 AM

I started early because he went on holidays.

ALLMTR
27-12-10, 10:25 AM
So how much is the turbo where the cat was going to cost?

Jim
27-12-10, 10:28 AM
dunno, haven't heard from TUFF yet. That's the project killer cost there. Have seen some dodgey chinese T4 clones with internal gate on ebay for less than $400 so it's still a possibility.

Jay_G
27-12-10, 10:29 AM
do you still have to wrx turbos you had a couple of years ago?

and possibility? http://www.boostcruising.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=650807 its a turbo and manifold so halve the cost and you get a slightly smokey $75 turbo

Jim
27-12-10, 10:35 AM
no, sold them a few years back...

ALLMTR
27-12-10, 10:38 AM
You'll need a return pump,yeah?

OKE020
27-12-10, 10:41 AM
Yeah i was thinking that, the VDO pumps are >$200

Cool project base

Jim
27-12-10, 10:47 AM
wonder how long a fuel pump would last with hot oil.
other thought was a holden oil pump on a washer motor

Jay_G
27-12-10, 10:52 AM
stupid idea, will a second power steering pump work somehow if you could remove the reservoir and use the reservoir feed as the suction part?? or the Holden oil pump could be a lot better, and use a old cordless drill from a garage sale and hook it up to the 12v. Ghetto.

OKE020
27-12-10, 11:01 AM
also no reason why the turbo cant use a stand alone oiling system like when jet boys make stuff out of them

HoonBoy
27-12-10, 11:16 AM
This thing looks slow from my rear view mirror! :D

I'm struggling to see a turbo setup coming in under budget. Oil control and plumbing makes the under car setup too expensive. If you could get a flange plate cheap enough a single bank log manifold turbo setup from the drivers with the exhaust going out the passenger side could work but won't leave much money for fuel control. Tuning a megasquirt from scratch without a dyno or road time would be painful and still pushing the budget. Might be able to do it with a draw through holley on that setup.

Jim
27-12-10, 11:25 AM
it's do-able but yeah it'll be close to the wire.
hah, could disconnect the PS and use the pump as the scavenge and plumb it back into the sump  wouldn't last long before the pump failed from being under vacuum all the time I would guess but should be fine for a drag car. Wonder if it would kill the turbo due to sucking it dry of oil all the time.

high mount would definately be cheaper and easier. plenty of room in the v6 engine bay too.

I have two stock RB20DET intercoolers under the bench I got for nix so they will be roped into the project build.

HoonBoy
27-12-10, 11:35 AM
Maybe I should change to the wagon. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/bolt-turbo-kit-ecotec-commodore-garret-t4-holden-/320635217184?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4aa7592520 would leave $300 for fueling with this "kit" but more importantly I can reverse the exhaust manifolds and use the afm pre turbo to help with fuel with a cheaper more DIY setup.

Jim
28-12-10, 07:20 PM
So was there any mechanical differences between the later ecotecs other than ECU and shit? Were the heads, cam and manifolds different or was all the power gains all from the ECU?

Ben.
28-12-10, 07:53 PM
power steering pumps do work for oil returns, although the one i saw was a second pump mounted down lower, but i dont htink it was completely below the level of the turbo.

ECU, as i mentioned in the turbo EA thread, pretty sure with this things to, its a $20 socket and a $10 eeprom chip to remap it (providing your not including the cost of the eprom burner)

supercharger's mentioned above arent that bad. they are 1.42L vs an M90 which is only 1.5L. obviously there is more to a supercharger than volume but quite a few people do run them at ~10psi, as much as they supposedly dont like it lol

also turbo, look to US ebay, new T3/T4's are cheap
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4-T04E-Hybrid-Stage-3-A-R-63-Turbo-Turbocharger-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5add2058f4QQitemZ39025 6941300QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries

i'll get right on that....

So I need early borg warner crownwheel bolts. VN uses reverse thread bolts that are much larger than the pintara 4.11 crownwheel uses. This is now holding up the diff rebuild.

next thingts to do are:
strip the other 2 doors,
cut the tow bar bolts and get rid of the tow bar,
gut the boot
gut the bonnet
fit the headlight controls and shit back in
fit tacho
fit NAWZZZZ
find a cheap stall converter.

Those VNs weren't that solid a car were they? Looking at your stripped-out interior pic there's not a great deal of metal in there. I always thought Dad's VP felt pretty flexy in the body and now it's obvious why.

So...
Took all the crap from the car to the tip today. Excluding the front seats, tow bar and bits and pieces, I dumped 160kg of VN shit today. Seats are prob another 30kg alone and I'm yet to gut the boot and bonnet. Hoping for a total of 200kg to be shed from this thing.

I'll weighbridge it when it's done.

1335kg according to redbook so 1100ish should be do-able

This needs my old T3's.

$400 & they're yours, along with dump pipe stubs, oil ines & coolant fittings.
Will need a pair of cheap ass wastegates tho.

Ghetto them on with J-pipes from the stock ex manifolds, drill the intake for a coolant return & use the heater supply from the water pump as the coolant feed.
Oil lines may be a bit long, but better than too short & they are braided teflon speedflow with T-piece etc to screw into the oil pressure sensor hole, I've even got oil drain stubs & some braided line that can go with them.

I'm pretty sure weighbridge is a noun. I think you meant to use the word 'weigh' which is also shorter than 'weighbridge'.

Fine for drag racing where spool time is not as much an issue, not so great if you need real good response.

If you cant make one of them run 13's on almost anything in this game theres something wrong, doesnt sound like efficiency or longevity is important in this instance.

Jim
05-01-11, 03:26 PM
problem is as soon as you're talking turbos you're also talking fuel systems, ECU changes and all the associated shit to go with it. not only does it take more time than I really want to devote to this thing, but it'd come close to blowing the budget especially once you factor in a tune.

Still have to find some drag slicks but I think Uncle said he had a line on a pair.

how do you reckon a nos injector behind the throttle body would go supplying fuel under boost?

washer bottle tank full of meth and a s/h efi pump, jaycar dc speed controller for the pump and just dial the fuel in for wot?

you probably should ignore most of that and stick to being sensible lol.

Filthy bodgey cold air intake. There's no cabin air from the plenum any more as I have blocked it all off, so there's no reason I can't take intake air from the nice cool high pressure zone.

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x289/SpamDragon/Red%20VN/IMG_0665.jpg

It's getting the loan of my race seat and the steering wheel from the white VN. The steering wheel was a freebie for helping a friend move house who had no need of it.

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x289/SpamDragon/Red%20VN/IMG_0666.jpg

But there was nowhere to fit the NOS button. So I swapped the wheel out for a SAAS wheel I had in the shed. This one came with a cracked boss from some sort of Mazda. It was in a box of random shit that was puit out for council cleanup. I think my quote at the time was "motherfucking SCORE!!"

Sat the nitrous kit in the engine bay to work out hosing. I need to find out what the thread is for the mixer. Anyone know? I need a tap to fit it to the inlet.

I'm planning on using the A/C wiring circuit because it's all there already and all I need to do is hook up two switches.

updated the first post with the budget. Yes, I'm a little under :D currently at about $700 in total cost.

Not bad on budget, I'm about $200 more than you with extractors, fluids and fuel pump included. Got a $195 convertor on the way as well :D

Corvette servo here http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350325850724&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT for $34.95. Seems like a waste of money if it's going to die on the first run.

Jim

Boost valve is easy to install, doesn't require removal of the valve body or anything, its held in by a circlip in the pump housing on the front passenger side of the trans (when viewed from underneath).

Jim
19-01-11, 11:41 AM
It's a prick to fit in the car though and risky because of the circlip. Best to pull the gearbox to fit it.

Have done the servo with the box installed, just took my time and got it sorted, fiddly yes, but certainly less work than pulling the box! just unbolt the rear mount and you can move it around enough to get it all out, will prob do this with my VN soon as i have a spare vette servo out of my VQ, the auto could use some love :)

Just put a billet servo in the VQ (2nd and 4th), so much chunkier and masses more apply area on the 2nd gear, even compared to the vette servo.

Ok it seems a lot of people feel threatened by this project and it's exceptional build quality from the thousands of hours spent by white gloved technicians specially succonded from NASA. While we admit it will have a slight nitrous tickle (5hp +\- 195hp) and was not registered, we feel it still qualifies as a street car.

To prove this point we pushed it down to the blue slip station who agreed that the workmanship is exceptional and more than roadworthy. In fact they asked if a photo of it can be used in an RTA brochure on good road behavior. I will fit the plates as soon as the titanium dress screws arrive.

To remove any doubt of it's street worthiness, Rodger Cordia has kindly offered to drive it from Hunter St to WSID.

I hope this settles the matter once and for all. :)

Signed: The Management.

Oh yes all measurements are in meters rather than inches. None of this mucking around with decimal places either.

Righto, we gave it a test run on our private road and all seems good except it seems to have trouble selecting 3rd gear. It got 3rd before so fuck knows what's going on.

Other than that it's just the diff to go now.

and the fuel pump and the nitrous setup and the plastic windows and some weight removal.

My 4.1:1's arrived today complete with bolts, shims, spacers etc. :)

Torque converter stalls at 2000 which is a bit dissapointing.
No incriminating pics so you'll have to take my word for it that it does epic handbrake turns :D

Nope. But more progress has been made.

Scrounged some old springs out from under a bench at Uncle's so the back sits a bit better now.

Also decided that all the cool race/drag cars have some fancy thing for blocking up the inlet in the pits to stop people like MartyXF from jamming their chip buckets in there.

Crash Dummy dropped by to have is shoes photographed, so Uncle accompanied them with some matching NOS gear.

He wanted to fit all of the NOS jets that were available. I can't see why this is a bad idea, at all.

Seat is readjusted, bottle is in and I'll start building the diff as soon as the land rover is sorted out.

Ok diff is built. Now has 4.11's and mini spool. After a lot of research and visits to Promac worked out what was needed. Haven't heard about the bolts and spacers for a while and didn't want to be a prick and keep hassling. Made bolt spacers from 50% cut strips of computer case and 50% indifference.

Uncle, busy on Friday night or want to fit up the diff?

But good luck, and take lots of pictures and some video.

No you don't, you've got a truck to build. :)

Good luck with the red streak. I'll be in Sydney myself, I might come out and take a look.
