View Full Version : Randy the racecar - 13's for $1300 project

HoonBoy

Whilst I was looking for a cheap LSD for the khana wagon I found one sitting in the boot of this.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs678.snc4/61852_441914889390_623059390_5018021_69628_n.jpg

Got an offer too good to refuse and it came home sans interior. Not only did it have a factory LSD in the boot, it has a minispool in the diff under the car and some new suspension bits. Sadly nothing to make it go faster in a straight line and the big end bearings have seen better days.

So the plan was to replace the bearings or motor (if I can get a cheap one), add nos and see how it went. New plans are maybe a turbo where the cat is or screw the rules and continue with nos. I already have a walbro pump, and nos kit sitting here waiting.

Technically it owes me minus dollars at the moment so I will let the PF mob speak as to it's "13's for $1300" value.

Lies!! This has glow in the dark bits, that has to make it faster.

That's the plan unless I get a real cheap engine. Not buying any bearings until I have looked at the current ones first just in case there is more damage hanging about.

If the motor is stuffed i would value it at under $300.

Stick with the nos idea, is it a VR or VS?

HoonBoy
27-12-10, 01:51 PM
VR, but I've got the VS wagon khana hack I could use if it easier with an ecotech over the old 3.8.

Sticking with nos would make life much easier :)

Nos 13's is hardly a challenge

HoonBoy
27-12-10, 06:20 PM
yeah a 13.9 wouldn't be much of a challenge, getting it working without blowing it up will be more of a challenge. No way I would stop at 13.9 either, after all, I had this car before the 13's for $1,300 challenge was mentioned. I'm not sure this is the correct car for the job unless I can get it at least 300kg under factory weight.

HoonBoy

I was walking past the car earlier so I took a few pics:

Full race car look for this one:

Not much interior left, sadly the seat was not included in the deal but it was purchased afterwards for the wagon:
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/03.interior1.jpg

Steering wheel will have to be changed to something non-wood for racing. Got a couple of old steering wheels hanging about and a factory Commo one if they don't work.

No room for passengers here:

the reason I got the car, factory LSD diff.

Rip it out? It's not like you need ABS...

If it's in the way, it will be ripped out.

Ben Wilson
27-12-10, 09:19 PM
That's the spirit, ditch the power steering, ABS and all those fuses* and you have a heap of room for a turbo..

I'm guessing old mate on eBay didn't come through?

HoonBoy

Yeah nothing from him. Going to try one more attempt at contact and then flame with negative feedback. He sells hiclones and has 100% feedback so there is obviously something dodgy going on.

On the plus side, found some lowered red springs for superior aerodynamic awesomeness. On a potential negative, it's got cast exhaust manifolds, not the pipe style that are easy to modify as per 2JLUX.

HiClone + paint stripper -> fasts?

where will you plumb the NOZzle? pre or post TB?

or a cheap S/C?

HoonBoy
06-01-11, 09:56 PM
nozzles will be post throttle body. If I can get a hold of some 10mm+ alloy plate I will make a spacer to hold them, otherwise I will hack up the manifold.

I did think of a supercharger setup but put it in the too much work basket.

HoonBoy

We got stuck in to swapping the engine today, after a few hours the bay looked like this:
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/09.emptybay.jpg

I think this may have had something to do with the engine's demise, the entire contents of the cooling system.
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/10.coolantfromrandy.JPG

Bit of a bad find, the passenger side exhaust manifold is cracked, the manifold on the replacement motor is the same. The rear muffler is barely there and shooting out bits of metal and fibreglass, that is going to take some time and budget to sort out.
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/11.crackedmanifold.JPG

New engine in place with some bits put back on, gave up for the day at this point. the ABS had to stay for now as there is only one outlet on the mastercylinder for the front and the ABS module has a seperate outlet for left and right.
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/12.newengine.jpg

Whilst the engine was out and we had easy access, the plenum and interior was cleaned up.
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/13.plenumempty.jpg

http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/14.interior.jpg

Lots of little bits left to fit on to the new engine and then I cross the fingers and hope it runs ok.

I'll do that to start with and see how it goes unless I manage to wrangle a cheap set of extractors.

I also need to sort out the heater hose connections, the plastic fittings fell apart when I looked at them the wrong way.

Jim
09-01-11, 06:26 AM
Heat it in the oven for a while before welding it. I think I'd stick weld it rather than mig too.

Ben Wilson
09-01-11, 07:33 AM
Mig will do it (for long enough), just get it bloody hot before you start.

HoonBoy

I haven't ruled out a turbo, I can do the fuel side for $400-500, all depends on if I can do the plumbing and turbo purchase for the same. On the other hand, I have all the nitrous stuff sitting here.

Potsy
09-01-11, 04:17 PM
Jamie, just got handed a VR stock steering wheel if ya want it.
Needs a clean, but looks OK.
In the spirit of 13's for $1300, i will charge ya $0

HoonBoy
09-01-11, 07:37 PM
Thanks but I already have a stocker sitting in the garage.

Got most of the engine back together this afternoon, I need to dig up some hoses to replace a couple that broke and get a non-aircon fanbelt to get it finished. Also bought a set of extractors for $80, that should sort out the cracked manifold. :)

ALLMTR
09-01-11, 08:28 PM
And also commits you to nitrous?

HoonBoy
09-01-11, 08:34 PM
And also gives me a more choppable exhaust manifold should I go turbo. :)

Whats the "fair-market-value" of a fogger nitrous setup? I bought it and used it on the Lancer so new price is not relevant but I haven't seen any second hand ones for sale to put a value on it.

Jim
09-01-11, 08:48 PM
bout 200 tops i'd say.

HoonBoy
09-01-11, 10:11 PM
The spend so far:

$200.00 Car (market value)
$27.90 Engine
$27.00 Oil
$81.00 Coolant adapter/Plugs/Thermostat/Power steering fluid
$80.50 Extractors
$50.00 Walbro (market value)
$200.00 Nitrous System (market value)

Total - $666.40

I've still got diff gears, exhaust repairs and whatever is broken in the cheap engine to go.

HoonBoy
11-01-11, 04:23 PM
Soooo, lets say I wanted bigger injectors, are there any cheap drop in ones?

Jim
11-01-11, 04:25 PM
2.6 magna? someone said they were a drop in, but I don't know if that's the case or not for sure.

HoonBoy
11-01-11, 04:29 PM
I've heard that as well but not sure if it's true or what size they are. I don't know the size of the stock injectors either so it's hard to compare!

Jim
11-01-11, 04:51 PM
bash the part numbers into google. someone will have impedence and flow rates

GAZ914
11-01-11, 06:23 PM
Magna are a higher flowing injector, but they run at lower pressure in the Magna, compared to the Commodore, so the flow rate equals out.

At Commodore pressure they are higher flow, but I can't remember what the value is.

I have a list of injectors and flow rates somewhere.

Magna injectors are meant to be 24lbs or ~250cc/min I'm pretty sure.

HoonBoy
12-01-11, 11:13 AM
Aparently stock injectors are good to 6PSI, might be easier to use a secondary injector setup after 6psi, over replacing all injectors to handle the fuel load. I have 6 stock injectors and fuel rail spare, just need a hobs switch and some mounts...

HoonBoy
21-01-11, 02:22 PM
I've been spending a bit of time staring at these options and looking at parts prices trying to make a decision:

http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/15.%20randyoptions.jpg

In the end I couldn't do the turbo options without blowing the budget. There are no scrap bins at the local exhaust places and paying retail for the bends needed for dump pipe/s add up way too quickly. I did think of press bends, but in the end that was going to make it harder to manufacturer and harder to fit in some of the places. So nitrous it is and I now have 2 x T25 and 1 RX7 turbo up for grabs.

I've done some shopping and picked up some diff gears (still looking for a second set for the wagon if anyone has spares) and a 2,500rpm stall convertor for bugger all. Apart from some gearbox bits, exhaust bits and tyres, the big dollar bits have all been purchased now.

Hopefully I can get it running again this weekend and start taking some weight out of it. Some new air shears should help out there :D I'm still concerned about the health of the ebay engine, but I won't know what it's like until I get it together and running. If it's dead, then the budget will take a big hammering and possibly take me out of the challenge.

If anyone's willing to help, feel free to drop by on the weekend :)

HoonBoy
22-01-11, 05:44 PM

ALLMTR
22-01-11, 09:25 PM
So are you out or just wagoning?

HoonBoy
23-01-11, 09:26 AM
I've got two dirt events in the wagon next month. If it survives that I'll put the nos on it. Using the rules, it's spend is up to $550 +safety stuff. It won't be light as it still has working aircon, full cage etc. but it should still be fun.

HoonBoy
23-01-11, 11:46 AM
If I could be motivated, it might be worth fixing one of the engines. I'm sure they will be enough good bits between the two to fix with basic stuff. The new engine runs OK, if I hadn't of looked at the oil pressure light or oil colour, I wouldn't of noticed anything wrong.

Selling it to Jim is probably a better option...

HoonBoy
23-01-11, 02:32 PM
On the other hand, getting sent these pics has sort of motivated me a bit... and the old engine is sitting next to the engine hoist and engine stand...

HoonBoy

Randy lives!!!! It was a combination of water in the sump from before I filled it up with oil and the oil presure switch failing when I swapped it from one engine to the other. swapping the switch with the rally wagons' switch now gives it the indication of low oil pressure.

Now it's gearbox, convertor and nos time!! :D

Spent a bit of time on this tonight fitting some lowered springs I had hanging about as I want to try the heavy duty raised springs in the rally wagon.

This is the old and new springs:
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/16.rear%20springs.JPG

and the new ride height at the rear. It still looks high and half of the stuff that has been taken out is sitting in the back of the car. Might need to lop a coil off them if it raises up any higher.
http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/17.rearspringsfitted.jpg

I forgot to take a before pic, but it's 2-3 inches lower after the spring change.

On the downside, the new oil pressure switch is playing up and acting exactly the same as the dead one! I'm not sure if it's an electrical or mechanical problem causing these issues but I am thinking of buying a cheap set of mechanical gauges and fitting them in the plenum area.

Made progress of sort today..

Put in the ex-Jim radiator and swapped it from storage next door to my carport. Fitted a cheapy oil pressure guage to make sure it had proper pressure as it has killed two oil pressure switches.. nothing lower than 60psi with a cold engine so that looked good. Driving it over some bump and lumps shows that the suspension is way too stiff at the back for drags but I have the stock springs that can go in to fix that.

Then it went downhill... we have been putting one car at the neighbours place as we don't have enough room for four cars, a car trailer, box trailer, parts etc. etc. and they don't have a car. Well they ordered a new car today, when it arrives, we lose the parking spot. So it looks like the decision to can the project has been made for me. I'd prefer it to go in one piece and be used, but the most likely option is I'll pull the good suspension bits out (lowered springs, heavy duty shocks, eurothane bushes here and there etc. ) and the shell will go to the crushers. :(

And no, the nitrous kit is not for sale :)

I thought you would want the extractors...

LSD is still going in the wagon, mini spooled diff will be up for grabs if I pull the car apart.

I think sedan diffs are different to wagons, you might want to check.

HoonBoy
15-05-11, 07:39 PM
Yeah they are different for the shock mounts. I will be putting the LSD centre in to the wagon housing along with 4.11 gears, easier than making some new mounts on the diff housing.

Ah okay, I thought you were talking straight swap.

yeah extractors would be good. Prob won't go on the red car tho. After this wed it'll probably be the end of the project - one way or another :D

All up to Bermo...

Jim
18-05-11, 11:26 PM
I'm sure bermo doesn't really need the car AND motor....that's just greedy!

HoonBoy
25-05-11, 03:12 PM
Well Randy is just about ready to go to Bermo..

http://www.hoonboy.com/randy/21.readytogo.JPG

But all this Red Streak action has gotten me motivated and in true ALLMTR style this has changed direction...

http://www.hoonboy.com/wagon/16.nitrousbay.JPG

http://www.hoonboy.com/wagon/17.nosbottle.JPG

It won't be getting any real weight reduction which along with not wanting to change motors after every run will put me at a disadvantage to Red Streak, but as it already has a walbro in tank pump and will be getting 4.11's and shimmed up LSD regardless of this challenge, it will be much quicker to get it to the track.

I may clean up some of the mud for a small weight reduction :D

HoonBoy

I did start working on the new 4.11 diff centre today. Hopefully I get it in before the dirt motorkhana on Sunday.

ALLMTR
29-05-11, 10:41 PM
Diff finished?

HoonBoy
30-05-11, 11:40 AM
Nope, the LSD centre is all shimmed up with new cones and stuff (not really relevant for this part over the current welded centre, but better for he dirt part) but I didn't get it in the car.

On other news, the strut tops are broken and giving all sorts of weird height, camber and castor issues. They will need to be fixed before it falls on the ground.

ALLMTR
03-06-11, 10:52 PM
Working on it this weekend?

I'll be spending all weekend at the Winternats, that should give me a good motivation boost to get stuck in to it when I return.

Did some work on this today. 4.11:1 diff centre is in, yet to be tested under power so lets hope it works. I went to fit my spare strut tops but they fell apart when I took them off the old struts. Then I broke my spring compressor. At least I managed to fit the nitrous line from front to back and mounted the soleniods and fogger in a different location so the line would reach.

Slowly getting there.

Back to working on the wagon soon. Did a khanacross on the weekend and broke one of the new strut tops so I'll need to sort that out first.

53909

Thinking about different options for the gearbox, I've got the base model transgo shift kit that should sort out the gearbox doing what it wants even when the shifter is in 1st but a full manual valve body and ratchet shifter would make it much nicer on the dirt and avoid any shifting problems in to 4th that red streak had.

Jim
12-12-11, 06:54 PM
how often will you really see 4th gear tho?
Still want me to fit the kit?

HoonBoy
12-12-11, 06:58 PM
I've got smaller diameter tyres so with any decent nos hit I will need to use it. I can't see it being used on the dirt, that would be scary speeds at Hampton :D

Not going to knock back a hand on sorting out the gearbox :)

Jim
12-12-11, 07:00 PM
all good! just gotta find a weekend to come down there.

HoonBoy
12-12-11, 08:32 PM
Looks like I can add this kit (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANSGO-700R4-4L60E-7-CS-3-4-Forward-Clutch-Spring-KiT-/260134015216?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3c913210f0) and this kit (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/260134015181?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649) to make it manual shift. Gearbox has to come out for the convertor so adding extra bits whilst the box is on the bench shouldn't be too hard.

Jim
13-12-11, 05:59 AM
if you're going to do that, just buy this: valve body (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-376015/)

HoonBoy
13-12-11, 07:04 AM
That was the initial plan, but it doesn't fit the VS gearbox, only works up to early VR.

Jim
13-12-11, 08:40 AM
is the VS a 4L60? They do a valve body for them too.
In fact, can't you fit a switchbox to the solenoids or something on these like the jap boxes?

HoonBoy
13-12-11, 08:44 AM
4l60E, no manual valve body that I could find but with the "Stage 3" shiftkit (that appears to be a Stage 2 which I have plus the two bits) it gives full manual control and removes the need for electronics. They specifically say that the 4L60 valve body will not work in a 4L60E.

Jim
13-12-11, 08:56 AM
fair enuff!
spring kits worry me. the more fiddly things to fuck about with the more likely something will go wrong

Ben.
13-12-11, 04:13 PM
you can modify them yourself for full manual shift. from memory you have to grind a few flats on some of those long bits that go through the valve body, and put a few spacers in etc but not overly difficult if you can be fucked pulling the thing right apart. sure i've got a tech document on it if you want it?

HoonBoy
14-12-11, 07:58 AM
I've got the other bits on order but it would be good to have a read of the tech doco. The box needs to come out for the convertor change anyway so pulling it apart is the next logical step.

HoonBoy
22-12-11, 01:39 PM
Jim, the rest of the bits arrived today, when are you free to do some gearbox work? :)

Jim
22-12-11, 02:27 PM

Was at Sydney Dragway last night but the car wasn't there with me.

Thanks to Jim, Gaz and Grumpy Rooster, all the gearbox bits are inside the gearbox and it moves under it own power within the confines of the backyard. Also has a pod filter plucked from the storage area as Grumpy Rooster wasn't happy with the filthy stock paper filter and I didn't want to buy a new one. Has to be good for at least 20 internet killa watts.

Finally tested the gearbox out of first gear yesterday, goes in to 1st, 2nd and 3rd as it should and has a nice solid shift to it. Stalls up to about 2,200rpm on the foot brake. Fitted up the nitrous activation and full throttle switches, blue "on" light and plumbed in the fuel system. Just wiring and bottle mount left to go.

Jim
13-02-12, 05:26 PM

do you still want that 4 stud rim back? I finally got the tyre swapped off it (though in view of both our radical project changes its probably academic now)
