Ok, my entry is a TE Cortina wagon. Picked this thing up for $150 with no gearbox and a cooked 2L. And the other half is a EF futura that some guy parallel parked in a tree that I picked up for $350.
I'll get it into the shed and start taking more photo's as soon as I get my 4x4 out (ie- lunch time)

Anyway here's pics!

Good score. Expect a tad over 100rwkw. While I'm not 100 sure, you might be able to get a corty xflow sump onto that block, or at the very least trim the EF sump above the pan rail and cut and shut them together (tack to an old block while welding). Oil pick up from a corty crossflow also needed.

I love this challenge. Guess I'll see you at Heathcote!

sump and pickup will fit, just have to relocate the dipstick for the oil.

major mods required to sump need both cortina and ef sumps you need EF pan rail and cortina bowl and then a few hours blending them together

need to recess the firewall slightly and fab custom engine mounts

if its a 4 banger you'll need to un stitch the gearbox crossmember mounts off the floor and move them, radiator support panel needs to be modified to take a 6 cyl radiator

Yeah the 4.o litre swap seems like a PITA considering the model came with a 250

Ahh the memories. My first car was a TE cortina 2.0. It was slow as fuck with the auto and when I put a manual in with a few bodgy tweaks it went hard and done an awesome 2nd gear skid. It was quicker than 202 commodores and 253 kingas so I was happy draging people on Anzac Ave. I only dreamed of a 4.0 powered version.

Why only 100rwkw? These things put out close to 160kw at the motor? I would have thought a few tweaks and it would have to get 130rwkw? I think if it was a manual it would do 13s very easily.

Had a bit of a shit day... My 4x4's head cracked 30km from home on a bush road in 38c heat, so it had to be towed home. So, now I'll have to drag my falcon wagon out of moth balls (read foot high weeds) and put new tyres on it just after putting a set of muddies on the 4x4. GAY.

On a positive note- I have the engine and trans home and a new roll of mig wire for the weekend! :D

Protip: Ditch the serpentine belt set up (balancer/alternator/air con/pwr steer/water pump/radiator) and replace with a simple EA-B-D v-belt parts.

note - water pump outlets and radiator must be matched. EA doesn't work with EF

Will be far less frigging around to set up.

Got my 5 stud conversion today, would have fitted them but they gave me the wrong seal. $20 for the old rotors from a wrecker, $45 for the bearings and seals. No discount on the bearings... bugger :( . Dummied up the mag off the val to see what it'd look like :P

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01074.jpg

Good thing about these rotors is that they use a hat pressed onto the hub: I might be able to fit a better rotor on it in future...

did you have any trouble with the disc hitting the ball joint ?

when i put xa-b discs on my TE i had to split the disc/hub and have the hub machined 9mm to sit the disc closer to the hub

Yes, the issue atm is studs now, as they are 9mm to long. What was your solution?

though i think if you use the std studs you can just fit a spacer plate on the wheels side

I then spent 2 weeks in Adelaide sorting that mess out. So with all the extra time we managed to get, I'm back to where I was a month ago... in a very tight spot with time with the build.

Oh and in that period- someone jumped my fence and flogged my BA calipers... :(

Is that the factory location for the battery? Do they end up being one of the major rust spots?

Looking good though!

Lobby,

The factory battery spot for the capella is behind the front right and it nearly always has rust in it.

It does actually look like that's where it started.....although going through most of the car probably not unless the battery exploded :p

The heater used to be in that location, it originally was behind the right headlight.

And then this happened...

Unfortunately the engineer cut the tailshaft too short and left something inside it, so I have to have a whole new centre tube fitted... 1204mm was substituted with 1024mm... Not overly happy, and proving anything will be close to impossible except for whatever was left inside it, coz it's not rattling- it's only sliding up and down :S
Tomorrow I'll be making visits and talking options.

Here's to hoping! :p

The sump:
It's partially tacked up, the engine will have to come out again to seal it all up, also went a bit lower than I would like to, but this was necessary to make up for the limited room and gearbox trusses/exhaust etc...

Oil pickup extension

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01345.jpg

And if you're wondering, I vac tested the setup and there are no leaks. :D

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01347.jpg

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01349.jpg

Bracing to prevent the weight of the longer pickup from snapping the oil pump off (the weight of the oil in it would make it pretty heavy and a bump would likely at least crack the alloy pump)

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01350.jpg

As I said it's only tacked in, gotta clean it up and weld it sealed.

So I started (and finished :p ) the tank mods today so that it would take the factory ford intank pump and sender unit.

Before this happened, I dropped the tank and found out there was at least 2L of fuel still in there! The car has been sitting in the yard for about 15 years!!!

When I got it out it stank like an evil version of turps and was the colour of rusty water... So, of course... I put it in an old drum stuck some old rope in as a wick, and lit it up... as you do.

It was pure death. It stank more as it burned and the smoke was a lovely rich black. :/

Anyway, with that gone I washed the tank out and let it dry in the sun for a few days with a fan being funneled into the sender unit hole.

When I was welding it I had compressed air being forced through the tank to prevent any "unfortunate incidents" LOL

OK. So pics...

Well I started fitting the wiring into the car and fitted the instrument panel, I'm about 1/3 of the way through it.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01458.jpg

I also discovered a very freaky thing about the steering columns of the 2 fords of this project...

Tils
03-09-11, 06:04 PM
This discovery of mine: Turns out the telescoping sections are virtually the same between the TE Cortina and the EF Falcon...

So I did a little switcharoo. ;) Top of the falcon shaft with the lower section of the Cortina...

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01462.jpg

Put in...
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01461.jpg

I then cut the steering shaft tube mounts off the cortina (I welded a rod across to save the hassle of aligning it later) and the adjustable mount off the falcon tube and put them together.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01463.jpg

I then cut the end off the cortina tube for the bush and dust seal.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01464.jpg

Put in place...

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01466.jpg

And voila! It fits!! Didn't even cut or bend under the dash!!!

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01467.jpg

See!

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01468.jpg

Now I have a 1978 Cortina with drivers airbag, and late model switch gear and key!

If you wanted you could just have used an earlier Falcon steering column with no airbag lol.

Looks good don't you rekon, might have to get a black wheel though... :p
