Well starting to get settled into my new place. Spent most weekends lately trying to sort crap out around the property, but I have finally got to the point were I can make a start on the FJ again.

I grabbed a crappy front diff so I could wheel-barrow the chassis into the new shed.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/100_1786.jpg

Just stripping and cleaning it mostly. Nothing dramatic or worth taking pics of.

The other 2 are now in donor positions, slowly getting stripped.

All that is left for me to take off the 40 are the diffs, powersteering and shocks.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/100_1784.jpg

The 45 will be giving up the body and the motor and box combo.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/100_1785.jpg

A bunch of parts are making their way here, so once they arrive things should start to speed back up again. :)

tim510
13-04-11, 02:30 PM
do you have a paint code for that paint?

DROOPZ
13-04-11, 03:01 PM
No, but the paint on the 45 is the correct OD colour for the ADF. If you can find a Protech Paint place near you, they are the current supplier for paints to the ADF and sell it by the 44 drum, so if you just need 4ltrs its cheap as shit.

I got the Enamel and asked for a hardener additive. Also comes that matt out of the can, no adding shit like I had to on the 40 series.

There isn't one. Stock FJ steering is way back up the chassis on a cast bracket. All cut off now.

This one is to mount the 60 series power steering that old zombie used.

Few big days this weekend. Had today off as well so wanted to make a bit of headway on the rig.

While I was scrounging for parts at the FJ graveyard I saw this little beauty in his shed. He said he was happy for me to come around and use it whenever I needed, which was awesome. He also fronted me a set of now spring bushes he had spare plus was of grabbed from the yard.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/IMG_0638.jpg

Next us was the front and rear braces/bumpers. Nothing amazing but it took so time. Unfortunately there needed to be a bit of 'filling' with the mig. Still turned out great though.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/IMG_0645.jpg

Quick sand and it was time for the 2nd coat of Killrust on the frame.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/IMG_0649.jpg

Today it was 'body off' day. I was by myself with posed some challenges but using the gantry and 240v winch we built for the Merc, things went fairly well.

The tub is now setup inside ready for the final bits of tinkering. Job for this week will be to pull the motor and trans and drop them into the new frame.

What was wrong with the old chassis?

DROOPZ
04-07-11, 10:15 PM
I stupidly didn't remove the body and strip the frame. In too much of a rush.

Then when I was working under it I found a few repairs. Then i found a bit of cancer, and after adding it all up I wasn't happy with patching it again. Too many weak points.

DROOPZ
06-07-11, 07:52 PM
Sandblasted, painted and rebuilt some OEM hubs. Much more solid than the aftermarket AVM ones I had on zombie originally.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/f60dafe8.jpg

Also finished up the new engine mount brackets. Not welding this time around. Much nicer using high tensile bolts.

Using the factory H55 crossmember, the engine and box end up offset lightly to the passenger side. The good news is that it helps clear the steering and front tailshaft.

"OEM" front hubs look like Warn to me, iirc Toyota used Aisin hubs. As an aside Warn used too, may still do, have a hubfuse to stop you from blowing the hubs. And you're not wrong about AVM hubs being weak. We had a set on our old L300 4x4 and managed to blow one even with the stock 1.8 and 14" wheels.
Much rust in this thing? Found a mob in Queensland ,Noosa?, that does full fibreglass bodied for them still. Except for the ute tub though.

DROOPZ
09-07-11, 11:39 AM
Chassis is 100% rust free and protected but the tub has a heap of repairs done already. Enough that I not happy to keep working on it. Just bolt it on and drive. There is no rust left but the floor looks crap.

I'm keen as shit to get the fiberglass tub, windscreen and front guards from OzEast but thats almost $6k. I'll do it at some point but it turns it into an expensive old landcruiser.

for now I'll use this tub and get it smashed up a bit first ;)

FUnnily enough though, Roothy has another troopy which I went and had a look at for him. I bloke I worked with said his uncle was selling one, but he knew nothing about car. Pretty much I said to Roothy "if you don't buy this I will!" The most immaculate 40 series I've ever seen! One owner, diesel, overdrive, all the options and original shiny mustard paint with no rust!

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/IMG_0720.jpg

With the clearances as good as they are i'm seriously rethinking if I should bother going back to SOA.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/IMG_0721.jpg

I think just going with body mods will give me the clearances I'm after. The rear needs flares anyway, so cutting out the wheel arches is no big deal. And the front can get an extra 2-3 inches just by doing the flare lift mod like Ranks 43.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/Ranks%20FJ43/awsomerank.jpg

Anyway, we'll see what happens.

Next up was a little visualizing of the tray cut.

In other news, the (hopefully) final piece of the TAC/rego puzzle arrived today.

Started installing hte handbrake this weekend. It took some trial and error and experimenting but I found a position that doesn't sacrifice too much ground clearance. Ideally you'd want to install it on the top of the T/C but you'd need a decent body lif t to pull it off.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac302/droopzanonymous/ZOMBIE%20Misc/Zombie%202/IMG_1150.jpg

The cable bracket is going to need some creative adjustments, since at this position, the one they supply isn't going to work. Apart from that I think we'll be good to go. Just need to track down a stock cable and see how close is is to fitting up.

The stock bracket installed (rotors not on correctly obviously, i was just checking clearences);

Got the little tiny rego tyres on it now. The rims that came with them are pretty nice too, so ill think I'll reuse them when i go back to the 38s.

So fuking close.

Got within 100m of the Weighbridge for my last inspection and it died on me. Fuel filter dry, no worries, out of fuel. Odd but ok. Put 2 Jerrys in and of we go. 20m, dead again.

Got the shits after a while. Fuel line was sucked in so I figured tank blockage. Limped it to the inlaws shop and pulled the tank. Sure enough a line full of crap plus it had de-laminated internally.

Anyway, frustrating being on the side of the road, but at least we sorted it out.

Lots of bar work.

Need to design and build the front bar and a tube tail gate. Then figure out what sort of cage setup I'll use to fuck the roof off.

04-03-12, 02:34 PM
Yeah cool. I've been getting together Chromo tube to build a "roof rack" for the jeep.
Keen to see how you go with it. I might need to steal some of your ideas lol.

irsa76
10-03-12, 05:27 PM
Apart from the tiregate which I see you've already knocked back the only other ideas are the prerunner net tailgate or a 5th wheel tailgate.
http://cdn.autoanything.com/images/products/med/hitch_accessories/go_industries_painted_v_gate.jpg
http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Tailgate_stuff/gatornet.jpg
Personally I'd go for something like the vertical mount tiregate as it'll put the spare wheel some where other then in the tray. Actually I reckon the Prerunner one looks great.

DROOPZ
12-03-12, 03:06 PM
Nah I think ill go a similar design to a tiregate, but without the angled spare carrier. Just a simple tube frame with mounts for a pair of jerry's, a hi-lift along the top, and a pair of maxitraxs on the inside face.

New set of issue now though.

Fucking front tailshaft is finshed and when i installed it the fuckig thing is 10mm from the extractor crossover under the sump. Wouldn't have been a problem back when it was SOA, but a huge problem now. Gonna spend a few night at the father in laws shop playing on the bender it seems trying to fab up a new design :(

Then on top of that the passenger side extractor flange looks like its warped more than it could take and won't seal onto the gaskets. Gotta take if off and see if its something heat and torque can fix or if its need to be belt sanded flat.

DROOPZ
13-03-12, 08:51 PM

Just gotta do the back tomorrow.

DROOPZ
14-03-12, 10:35 AM
Yup. Too many compromises going back to SUA. Too much had been so well setup for the SOA I was sick of constantly changing and modifying good parts to go back to SUA. Since 90% of the setup was still in place it oly took 2 hours to completely swap the front over. And I reckon less than an hour to do the rear. :)

DROOPZ
14-03-12, 09:05 PM
Yeah but they aren't available locally. Plus nothing to suit an old cruiser so I'll still end up having to fab my own. I was just using their designs as an example.

Ill get the pics off his camera but the fucking thing ended up on both diffs and the winch was useless. Ended up yanking him out backwards for about 20meters until he got on solid ground.

Here we go... the main bog...
