View Full Version : Should I buy a GQ shorty?

myliberty

It's a simple question really.

I have a couple of dollars for a toy stashed aside.
I'm mostly rid of my old toy - the liberty.

I was looking a a ute to go camping and take the dogs places, but a shorty will do the same thing.

The old man is also upgrading the turbo and manifold on his GU patrol, and has a turbo manifold and stock turbo available. Is it a sign?

Do it.

Diesel ones aren't easy to find though.

Something something turbo lsx something something GQ Patrol...

We used to have one with a 308 in it. Went well.

Get something that you don't mind scratching though...

Fucking yes, do it, they are awesome. Find a TD42(rare but worth it), bolt on turbo and you have an awesome truck.

I could drive it up for you. Not because I like you, but because I'm a nice guy. Like Nice Guy Eddie.

not heaps of room in them for camping gear...
standard GU 4.2 turbos are not exactly powerhouses, but the GQ shorty is alot lighter. And its got to be better than a NA TD42.

shorties can also have driveline issues with big lifts. need things like double cardin joints, gearbox spacers, adjustable arms to correct pinion angle. just be aware of that if you look at the one linked on carsales. oh, and 6" suspension lift is totally illegal in QLD.

myliberty
18-04-11, 04:41 PM
I'd probably take the 2" body lift out and sell it if I bought that one, and just sit on the 6" lift springs.

If it looks legit in pics, I'll probably have it. It has less kms than the '00 liberty I'm driving currently.

I know they are hard to find, I've had my eye on the patrol market for a while.

so awesome.

18-04-11, 04:57 PM
Big lift is gay.

I had a 2 inch spring and 3 inch body lift and fit 35's easy on my shorty.

Next time I'd just go 4 inch spring or 2+2.

I'm not above listening to the advice of other owners.
it has 2" body lift, I could sell the 6" springs and put 2" springs back in.

probably make it more sane for inevitable street duties.

sounds like I own it already. steady on Az.

Marv
18-04-11, 05:43 PM
Can it skid?
And can I fit an oompapa band in the back? I'll need cruisin' tunes on the long, lonely Pac Highway...

hrt5l
18-04-11, 05:47 PM
Looks like a good buy. I would take the body lift out too, not many people put shortys up that high cause they tip over and you dont need it cause of the shorter wheelbase

Dave
18-04-11, 07:07 PM
6" lift would be horrible to drive, but other than that it looks tits, price is good too.

TT
18-04-11, 08:26 PM
it seems to need a 1uz?

DROOPZ
18-04-11, 08:47 PM
Yeah body lifts are shit. Take it out, sell it and the 6inch spings, buy a nice set of +4inch springs and sexy shocks.

needs 1GZ according to Al.

Big lift is gay.

This unless you wanna be all hektik and cover it with unit stickers and start collecting flat brim caps. Huge lifts look cool but do fuck all else except make the truck gay and useless to drive, as well as gay and scary off road.

My old hilux had something like 6" of spring lift, 2" body lift and 35's or 20's with 285 street tyres and looked tough as fuck. That was great until you wanted to actually drive it anywhere for anything or for any reason. Will not ever lift again.

All you need is good tyres and diff locks to clear shit.

Buy patrol, add boost, get good tyres and air lockers, win.

myliberty
18-04-11, 11:25 PM
I have a near stock 88 shorty lined up with only a 2" spring lift.
will be spot on.

will knock up a manifold and bolt up GT35R or GT4088R... or maybe Al will convince me to compound it cause the turbo is just sitting there.

myliberty
20-04-11, 10:33 PM
I now own a GQ shorty :)

cant wait to see it.

cant wait to drive it.

myliberty
20-04-11, 10:39 PM
Someone give me 7 good reasons why putting a .86 twinscroll ball bearing GT4088R on a TD42 would be a bad idea.

Dansedgli
20-04-11, 10:48 PM
Do it. I wanna see how a deisel goes with a proper turbo on it.

myliberty
20-04-11, 10:59 PM
so do I.

proper manifolds and proper turbo, twin gates.

Dave
20-04-11, 11:00 PM
RHS manifold FTW, see paul's hilux

myliberty
20-04-11, 11:03 PM
seen it.
I was going to put pretty steampipe manifolds on the H6, now it's going on the I6D ;)

hrt5l
20-04-11, 11:18 PM
I like where this is going. You will have to spend some money on the fuel pump though if you want to get anything from a turbo that size

myliberty
20-04-11, 11:29 PM
it's due for a pump rebuild some time... will just be getting it tweaked for 400HP :D

Bogan dave is telling me it needs a camshaft too, or was I telling him that?

and I've already PM'd TK.

nah, I'm going to have some dirty diesel fun for a while.

Don't worry, 6L V8 is on the to do list, but not in this truck.

Sketchy
20-04-11, 11:53 PM
Dont put the GT40 on it. That will end up being a whole lot of broken gay pain in the arse to drive gay. Internet forum warriors will gargle your balls but you will hate it within a week when fully laden trucks and grannies in clapped out auto sigmas smoke you a good 300m away from the lights till you get some reasonable form of boost (if any), you want to tow a trailer or get up a steep driveway.

Unless you are going to compound turbocharge it. But you dont have the scrotum for that :)

myliberty
21-04-11, 12:00 AM
It's NA. Are you saying a GT4088R equipped TD42 will be worse to drive than an NA TD42?

Just trying to get this straight... Cause I think that what you are actually saying is that you are a raging homo :D

GT40 would be fucking rubbish on a TD42. You would not get boost until 3rd gear at about 100rpm past the redline.

Compound that shit or you are a fag.
VF46 primary, Phil's TDO6 secondary. Phil can put his GT30 on the BMW and make 11ty hp's.

SLO78U
21-04-11, 08:21 AM
diesels don't rev so go for a small turbo.

i have a wrx turbo to go on my td42 when i can afford it. should spool up nice and early.

Why do People say diesels don't rev?

My mates diesel patrol revved just as much as my petrol one.

The bits inside are fucking heavy. Your mate's diesel didn't rev more, it's more that the petrol one revved less than any other petrol engine.

You don't want to swing a TD42 past 4k unless it's rebuilt from bits made of unobtanium.

Fuck you all, I still want to put the GT40 on it.

Dyno stock and dyno after, I'll put money on it having more torque everywhere with the GT40. even if it doesn't come on boost. In fact, I'll probably run it without wastegates at all.

cunts.

BigMuz
21-04-11, 11:27 AM
Welded wastegate is the win.

Don't be a fag, I've driven a TD42 with a GT40 sized turbo and it was shit, didn't even see boost around town at all. A GT4082 is fitted to a 9L diesel and it is smaller than the 4088 by a fair margin.

I wanna compound a diesel, let's do this. VF46 is brand new and owes me $300, Sketchy's TDO6 is too small for his 2J so he will prolly trade it for a wristy or scotch or something.
Also want to do a top mount cooler where one end tank is the inlet manifold.

Marv
21-04-11, 01:32 PM
Swap GT4088 for TD06 + cash?

myliberty
21-04-11, 01:36 PM
will do compound setup, but only with GT35R + VF46.

Sketchy doesn't have the dangles to put a 4088 on the e30.

Marv
21-04-11, 01:59 PM
Maybe the answer to getting the 4088 to spool is to fit a 440cui LSX block and Dart heads?

myliberty
21-04-11, 02:04 PM

Marv

pull the 2" BL lift out and be happy

I wouldnt put flexy coils in it...they are flat out dangerous in a shorty

nice rig

the one I got is a tidy unit, just needs lockers and a turbo and I'll be away every weekend.

Sure thing, a tight exhaust housing would be preferred. Or I have a tial housing here.

I belt around in GQ shorty as a daily.

It was originally an auto petrol, but the previous owner changed it to TD42 - still auto.

I had a really good turbo manifold made up for it by ASE here in adelaide, and fitted it with a Holset turbo off a generator, SARD external gate from Ebay, a series5 RX7 topmount cooler + late model patrol hood scoop and off it went.

It was a bit laggy, so I just made a blanking plate up that blocked off 1 of the split pulse entries into the turbine housing and boost threshhold dropped several hundred RPM to the point that now it's almost perfect.

Now it goes like stink (comparatively of course) - makes about 120rwkw.

I've got the wastegate clamped shut these days, so it makes about 20psi peak, but when rolling around it makes between 5-15 psi depending on load.

It's ability to do burnouts is quite surprising too.....

When this turbo shits itself I'll go the compound route.

The only problem it has now is that with the extra power, the converter has turned into a 2500+stall - although I'm having the converter de-stalled next week.

Awesome rigs.

Sketchy doesn't have the dangles to put a 4088 on the e30.

Try me :) E30 has traction now so I need another 100hp or so to fix that problem. Besides, its useless to you now seeing as you have nothing that will make any use of it.
