Well i have put all the details in the 4wd thread already but thought id start its own thread in here to show mods etc as i do more.

31x10.5-15s are only mod at purchase time, They where white but some rattle packs changed that.

I have just been servicing it and doing some mods that you cant see
like putting on a Thermo fan and doing a Cable tie mod to the intercooler pipes to stop them from swelling as they do normally.
Sharpens up the throttle response off the bottom and is about $300 less than
a hard pipe kit :yup:
Just place a cable tie every 20mm or so to stop the rubber pipes expanding..... Ubercheap only had white ones so the pipes look like a Zebra.
Lucky im not putting the Deli in a show and shine soon :)

Tut you can buy side cutters that will cut cable ties flush
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=TH1891&CATID=29&form=CAT&SUBCATID=519

they have the chamfer on the inside.

And i do know about cable ties cutting your arms open, if you think plastic are bad you should try stainless steel ties

That actually looks pretty cool. I approve.

Thanks Sketchypimp.

I think some Flexi flares will be the next mod as the tyres are sticking out past the guards a bit.
Then a freeflowing exhaust to release another handfull of Killerwasps.........

i know. an split pins and locking wire. have had it all in me.
but that hose didn't seem like it was done with the tie wrap gun.....

anyway, i'm principally against diesel except for trucks, and i think a van might be ok, too... so yeah, i think you're in the twilight zone.

cool van?

Never heard of the cable tie trick, been awhile since I was on the Delica forums. I found wrapping the intercooler hose with reinforced tape does a good job, especially when the hose is split due to oil eating it. Should be a good bus off road, would have to be better then the LWB crystal roofs I was looking at a few years ago. And they aren't that bad when you take into account the size.

Yeah i dont imagine a white van is high on the Highway patrols radar so probably wouldnt have any dramas but i like the look of the Flexi Flares anyways.

Thanks for all the positive comments.

Looks like it handles the offroad stuff fairly well. Does it actually? How many strange looks have you had from the "hardcore" offroadies?

bigshipengine.jpg
22-05-11, 09:52 AM
Handles it better than most people assume. It will do anything a Pajero / Triton will do as thats essentially what the running gear is the same as.
Get the odd comment about it on the tracks but mostly curious rather than negative.

Yeah 4WDers attitudes are starting to change as the aftermaret opens up for other vehicles, but you'll still get the occasional 'get a HiLux or a 'Cruiser or fuck off' wankers.

Ive always liked to do things different so im cool with others wondering why you would bother.

Got a straight through 2.5 inch Turbo back Zorst fitted to the Deli today with no muffler....
Not sure if i like the sound its a bit like a boat blowing bubbles in the water.
Will give it the benefit of the doubt for a week or so and if i still dont like ill get a straight through muffler fitted to take the edge off it.
Freed up a bit of power off the bottom.
Will be fitting Boost Gauge tomorrow and bleed valve to run about 15 Psi and see how she goes. Diesel Mods are new to me.....

bigshipengine.jpg

Fitted Boost Gauge and Bleed valve today.
Dosent like 15 Psi as the check engine light came on so turned it down to 13 Psi which drops slightly as revs rise.
Not a great deal quicker acceleration but definately better torque as it goes up a steep hill near my house using less throttle and without kicking back to 2nd like it used too.
Will do research to see whats needed to run 15 Psi as the Map sensor is telling the puter its overboosting.

Is it a bleed type boost controller?

I had the same thing with the Surf when I wound it up, mainly climbing hills when the auto downshifts. Apparently it's called wastegate creep and using a ball check (i think it was?) type controller you don't get it.

Does it cut fuel or spark or anything?

I can't really notice any difference when it happens other than the light on the dash which goes away if you back off it.

I just wound my boost tee back a bit and keep an eye on it. Easy enough to control with the right foot.

Nice, Dicklickers are good rigs. Under-rated IMO

bigshipengine.jpg
06-06-11, 08:22 PM
Yeah a basic Bleed type one.
Its a Diesel so dosent cut spark id say it just cuts the fuel (not much else you can in a Diesel) I may get a dearer Turbosmart Gated Bleed Valve as this was a Povo one.

06-06-11, 10:44 PM
Is that different to the one that I have?

I dont have a Torbosmart one at the moment i meant (without making it clear) that i have a cheap ebay special but will get a name brand like Turbosmart.
Should have taken the Eboost outta my Skyline before i sold it :-(

Took the old girl out for a test drive after fitting my EGR valve blanking plates today
and took this going up and down a hill near my house.
Yet again the steepness looks lame in the video but ill be fucked if id walk up the cunt.
Think the wide angle lens of the Motorsport Go Pro also levels shit out.......

anyways.

yeah videos level everything out, just something you have to deal with. Good to see the bus is getting some offroad use.

bigshipengine.jpg
03-07-11, 08:59 AM
yeah it gets used a bit.
There where 4 young blokes in an 80 series at the bottom of the hill looking at it deciding weather to go up then when the spastic bus went up there they decided to do it. :rotflol:

i imagine it would feel quite odd going down steer decents sitting that far forward in the vehicle?

Nice looking rig - white does them far better justice than the dark colours.

bigshipengine.jpg
04-07-11, 08:05 PM
Not to me i guess as im used to the seating position.
Also you arent sitting over the motor like in older vans the motor is still out in front of you like a "normal"4wd.
Granted the distance to the front is still less than in a regular Land patrol etc....

How high was that hill? You can see the curvature of the earth from up there! ;)

Decided the bus needs a lift so i went shopping online last night and also going to replace shagged out suspension bushes etc.
I bought a 2 inch lift set of Dobinson rear springs (front is torsion bar so wind up to match)
also got 4 Rancho RS9000XL shocks.
All new upper and lower congtrol arm bushes and upper and lower ball joints.......
$1500 later........
Anyways will post pics once all is done and lifted.

bigshipengine.jpg
10-07-11, 05:25 PM
Installed a UHF Radio in the bus this arvo so i can talk to others out on the tracks or fat truckies on the highway.
Works like a dream.

bigshipengine.jpg
23-07-11, 07:53 PM
I got semi motivated this arvo and decided to fit my Dobinsons 2 inch lift springs and Rancho shocks to the bus and wind up the front torsion bars to match.

Raised it up nicely and its now about 2-1/4 inches higher than before due to the sag in the old springs.
Opinions PFer's? last pic is before the lift to show the difference.

Same here mate but weather broke this arvo. Hence getting my ass off the lounge to do it.

Function > form, but looks wise I prefer it before the lift. Those wheel arch gaps are massive.

Can you fit bigger rubber under it now to fill em up?

How's it to get in and out of with no side steps?

The Surf's 2" BL + 1.5" in tyres removed my ability to get in without hopping up on the sidestep like a gimp everytime. The nopics hates it

bigshipengine.jpg
24-07-11, 09:48 AM
Im planning on some flexi flares as well which may improve the gap i reckon?
Not too bad to get into as when you open the door there is a step inside thats lower than the floor.
Its a better pic before the lift also so that dosent help it was clean and tyre blacked etc where it is putrid in those new shots.
I could fit 33's now with some minor body adjustments (with a hammer to the inner guards) but the gearing would be affected a fair bit.
Im thinking lose the small standard mud flaps and get some bigger ones also as they look tiny now its lifted.

bigshipengine.jpg
13-08-11, 01:50 PM
Well my standard bash plates where all fucked up from my offroad use so i bought myself some more serious kit.
4mm steel for the bash plates and 6mm steel for the mounting bracket.
It protects the engine sump and oil filter and the transmission pan nicely now.
Aussie made as well.
Is good for some peice of mind out on the tracks.

Front and rear bash plates and mount.
