When I got it:

91 2.4LTE auto, 205k kms. Everything is really straight and clean. Underneath is basically spotless and the engine bay is the same. I hated the wheels initially but they've grown on me a bit now.

Bought it on Sat, had the windows done with 15% tint on Mon then went and picked up boost, temp gauge, bleed valve and a turbo timer and put them in. The sender for the temp gauge is wayyy too short (reaches about halfway across the rocker cover) so have to look into whether I can get a longer one.

Bumped the boost up a bit and she goes much better now. I think I need to wind it back as it gets to 12.5 - 13 psi on normal driving but if I step on it on the freeway and she kicks down a gear (especially going up hills) it's spiking to 14 - 15 and the red light coming on. Doesn't appear to affect performance or how it drives and soon goes off if you get off it which I have done ( only did it a couple of times to test). From what I've gathered this is overboosting? Mine doesn't seem to cut fuel so I need to do more research.

- Since worked out this is wastegate creep, wound it back a touch and will sit on 14 up big hills but doesn't throw the error light much anymore.

Still as yet unidentified rear suspension, 2" lift.

Got Safari snorkel fitted by the boys at Hitech 4x4 Penrith. Was too scared to go hacking into the body myself.

Got some big tyre envy. Test fit 15x8 33x12.5 muddies.

So off to get some of my own

Scrubbed on the bullbar and guard so came off again until the 2" bodylift went in.

Lived here for a couple of months. My nopics rocks, only slight whinging about the rubber smell :D

Picked up a wide body front end, funnily enough from another PFer over here

Got some flares as well, haven't gotten around to fitting them or the front end yet.

Survived snow trip last year. I think I came very bloody close to cooking the motor too. Pulled up at the hotel one night and it was bubbling coolant out the overflow onto the ground and the temp gauge was slightly above normal. Let it cool down and it took nearly 4.5L of water and has been fine since.

I had another pants browning moment when started it after our first night staying down there. Knock rattle crash bang until it warmed up and then it was fine. Is this common with them in colder temperatures?

Got a new exhaust 2 1/4" to gearbox 2.5" back with straight thorough muffler. Had a pyrometer hooked up at the same time.

Driving to work the next morning and she overheats.

Same symptoms as at the snow (boiling out the overflow) except this time the temp gauge shot up. Cooled her down and put 4.5L of water in, drove home fine, then hopped in to go to mate's around the corner and temp gauge shoots up, another 4.5L go in, both heaters on (should the back one get hot because it doesn't?) and it was fine again until this morning driving to work the needle was dancing up then back down to normal.

I am having horrible head-cracked thoughts constantly but it doesn't have any trouble starting, and runs fine, no clouds of smoke or anything...

Latest update, been chasing the overheating problem for 3 weeks and finally gave up yesterday.

Replaced thermostat with 82deg Tridon highflow.
New radiator cap.
Replaced 2 x heater hoses that run across the front of the motor and hose clamps.
Reverse flushed cooling system.

Still leaking somewhere. Mechanic reckons it's the water pump so I've dropped it in for them to do and timing belt while they're there. Funny thing is I've been quoted not far off what they were going to charge for the timing belt when I asked a month ago so it's kind of worked out well.

Could of had a crack at it myself but the 3.5hours they quoted would probably turn into 13.5 and I just paid rego on Saturday so want it back ASAP (especially given the $$$ I've spent on mods the last few weeks)

Got back from mechanics a week or two ago with new water pump and timing belt, running beautifully ever since. Cost me $400 :D Joe Armour Automotive in Penrith.

First trip away:

(note dinged up chrome rear, hadn't even put it into 4wd at that stage :( )

Bought a Kaymar rear bar that I was assured was for my model, turns out it's off the one before, $300 if anyone wants it.

28-04-11, 12:46 AM
Been running like a dream *touch wood since the waterpump was done. Towed a fully loaded camper trailer to Lake Eucenbeme and back and was down near Cooma again this weekend gone spotlighting out of it.

Average fuel consumption 13.7L/100 :(

Raise bullbar to suit bodylift.
Fit flares and wide body front end.
Free wheeling hubs to bring the economy down a bit.
Transmission cooler for beach work.
Rubber in the rear to hide the see-thru bit.

Longer term sliders and a custom rear bar with carrier, ARB or TJM style black steel bullbar. Water or secondary fuel tank under the rear.

If the motor goes I'll look at a 1UZ swap.

Haven't really done a whole lot of 4x4ing but I've got all the gear and no idea. Recovery kit, puncture kit, compressor and 80L Waeco. Just need to make more time to get away.

Thats a beautiful surf. Good work on picking her up.

Surfs are great cars as they are loaded with goodies.

Hoping you post more trip reports.

03-05-11, 09:49 PM
Man everytime i see your rims i want a set!! I have no idea where to get them...Man 13.7 is awesome...I wish the cruiser did that NOT towing!! haha

When are we going on a trip lads?

04-05-11, 08:49 PM
I got em from Bob Jane T-Marts. King rims are the other mob that make Sunraysia style but they have smaller triangle cutouts and I liked the ROHs better.

Pretty sure they come in 16" too :p:yup:

Have you guys been to Stockton?

My mate and I want to go but haven't been before so not sure what to expect. Apparently you need to buy a permit or something?

I keep forgetting the speedo is 10% out with the 33s too so it's probably closer to ~12l/100. FWHs will be the next thing I do which they reckon brings it down a lot. Just won't be able to press the button and be in 4wd without getting out of the car anymore.

The tank is only small at 65L. Gets depressing putting nearly $100 in and only getting 450kms to tank when the Rolla does 7.5l/100km

04-05-11, 10:25 PM
Sweet rims, how much do they cost??? Wish I could import them hahaha...

Man thats funny it cost me about $105 to fill Baboon and get 480km a tank....so its better than yours?? But Diesel cost more I suppose!

05-05-11, 05:27 AM
Cheap as! They're only steelies... $60 a rim or something crazy (compared to JDM stuff :p)

According to the chart you could run 15x7/8 or 16x7/8 on yours

Pretty close on fuel economy, I was looking at 80s as well but thought they were outside my price range. Didn't count on spending so much on mods :knock:

05-05-11, 08:15 AM
nice thread mate and a good looking car! would have plenty of fun in it.

1uz for sure!!

05-05-11, 08:47 PM
Looks sweet as.
I used to use Stockton Beach all the time as i was based at Williamtown RAAF Base behind the beach for 10 years but i left there in 2001.
You do need to get a pass to access the beach and at the time you could get them from lots of places nearby. Servo's, Tackle shops etc.....
No idea if its changed in the 10 years since but hope that helps.
I reckon 13.7 liters /100 towing a campr trailer is good also.

26-09-11, 06:15 AM
Been working on and driving the Rolla a lot lately so the Surf hasn't had much love for a while. Gave her a full service last week and this week finally fitted the later model front, raised the bullbar to suit the body lift and chucked the weathershields and flares I've had for ages on. They'll be coming off again for painting as they're not an exact match and there's some nasty scratches.

Heading south to go shooting again next month so will get some spotties on the bar before that trip. Then thinking Davies Craig trans cooler, air con working for summer, FWHs and top mount.

Haven't managed to get up to Stockton yet but still keen.

07-12-11, 02:21 AM
Now with more cracked head :knock:

1UZ research underway, ETA 3 - 6 months.

07-12-11, 02:42 AM
Gonna have to take that turbo badge off... or perhaps not? ;)

07-12-11, 04:59 PM
I saw this cars doppelganger in Toowong (bris) today

29-01-12, 07:22 PM
Nice Surf! I had a KZN130 manual (1KZTE engine) and i adored that car, shouldnt have sold it. Theres plenty of 2LTE haters out there but as long as you keep water in them they'll go forever. Just way too many heater hoses on them.

I love working on them, the boys at work think Im a sicko.

29-01-12, 08:16 PM
Now with more cracked head :knock:

Mine did that at Apollo Bay in Vic.
Then on my trip did a hg about 30kms out of Halls Creek.
That was after I had checked out the whole cooling system

29-01-12, 08:23 PM
how did you crack the head? popped hose?

29-01-12, 08:26 PM
how did you crack the head? popped hose?
Its a Surf its a built in factory feature its just a matter of time till they open up :P

05-03-12, 01:29 AM
Was my own stupid fault, no one to blame but myself, I know enough about them to know better.

It started playing up a while ago, randomly getting warm sitting at traffic lights for a while after a hard run. Noticed it starting to boil in the overflow when switched off at times too. It came and went a couple of times without getting too bad so I just ignored it. Went away shooting in November to Nimmitabel and it was awesome. Didn't miss a beat once including long nights of spotlighting/cruising around the paddocks at low speed and lots of idling.

So after that my mind was kind of at ease and the next time it got used I towed an empty trailer to Nowra to look at a bike, was fine on the way there, started overheating on the way back. Let it cool down and refilled it a few times, then it split a hose, so I bodged that up by trimming another one. All trying to just keep it going to get closer to home cause I knew I was going to be in for an expensive tow. Hindisght's great. I should of stopped at first sign of trouble and called my mate/Dad/Danny fuck anyone to bring a car trailer and take the trailer home. They both got up me for not ringing them in the first place. Instead I kept pushing it until the radiator exploded and the motor gave up. After we'd ran out of mobile battery and it was pissing rain in a 100km/h zone so spent the night in the car. Dad organised the tow after I flagged someone down and borrowed a phone in the morning. $550 tow (with trailer) from the NRMA to get from between Wollongong & Picton to Penrith. Failure of epic proportions

Most likely was blocked radiator I think so would of been fine if I had of got it rodded out. Only other thing I could track down online was the viscous fluid in the hub fan. Since been told to stay away from them with green coolant which was what I put in it

Not sure about the 1UZ now. Would love it and still want to do it one day but trying to save for a house/marriage/kids with the nopics so not sure it's a good idea right now. I think I can revive the 2LT-E (which I don't actually mind either, just a bit slow) for about $1500 with new 3L head, cams, valves etc, new radiator and rings/bearings. Thinking this is the best option at the moment as I've already spent coin on exhaust, and few other bits and pieces that wouldn't transfer over to a V8. Haven't played with diesels much before but I managed to rebuild my 4AGE myself with no experience, the manual and some help so will start pulling it down soon and see how I go.

It's pissing me off looking at it everyday and not being able to use it :gay:

Pic of her last trip away, weathershields cost me a cuntload in shipping from the US & A, barely been on there a month and one of the backones now has a nice chunk out of it from a rifle barrell FFFFUUUU. Still need to cover the gap from the BL too. Not long after this pic I nearly rolled it in the quarry down the back and got it proper filthy :D

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l125/Instigator827/387104_10150917323040626_783390625_21617880_209594 7943_n.jpg

14-05-12, 09:26 PM
OK so Surf's been having a little rest since it shit the bed in November.

Out of curiosity I charged the battery and chucked it back in today and the cunt fucking started

There's no coolant in it and the radiator's exploded so I only ran it for about 10 seconds. Was running pretty rough and blew a lot of white smoke but that's gotta be a good sign right?

I'm going to put a new radiator and hoses in it and see what it does after that.

If that doesn't work I'm tossing up if it's worth fixing the diesel or trying to find a cheap v8 Hilux to pinch the mounts and adaptors from :dunno:

1UZ would be nice but it's looking like being a 5k conversion (minimum) :ugh2:

14-05-12, 09:53 PM
There was a whole 1uz surf identical to yours for sale up here recently for $4k.

Edit -Here's one closer to you. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toyota-Surf-LN130-1UZ-/300710734677?pt=AU_Cars&hash=item4603c1ab55

14-05-12, 10:48 PM
I have a green version of yours on 31s fun cars

15-05-12, 04:11 AM
Cheers Paydirt hadn't seen that one, might go check it out next week :)

15-05-12, 08:38 AM
If you do decide to go down the 1UZ route, have a chat with 'Twisty' either on the 4WD Action forums or Outerlimits 4x4 (which is down atm). He was one of the first guys in the country to do a 1UZ in a Surf/4Runner.

15-05-12, 05:31 PM
chuck a 1KZ in it. diesels rock for 4x4's. shouldnt be an overly complicated conversion since some came with them from the factory

15-05-12, 06:21 PM
just buy a hilux 3L and throw the 2lte manifolds and turbo etc on. done. 2.8L

16-05-12, 12:58 AM
The problem with both of those suggestions is anything diesel = $$$

From what I've found so far $2500 seems to be the starting price for motors.

3L would be the go if I can find one cheap?

16-05-12, 01:59 AM
Hmmm 2.8L with Surf turbo seutp would be nice, I like the diesel even if it was slow as.

Just found this :dunno:

16-05-12, 09:55 AM
Give these cats a call, Superior Offroad 4WD - (02) 9757-1405. They're based in Smithfield and are guns when it comes to this stuff. They wreck, repair, service and fitout 4WDs and probably have a nice 3L, 5L or 1KZ-TE sitting in the workshop that they can slot in. They're very handy on HiLuxs/Surfs as well. Chris and boys will look after you, give him a call and talk about your options.

16-05-12, 09:59 AM
5L is hard unless you go manual IP as you caant hook up the crank angle sensor to it. i got the 2L aswell and wanna go the 3L but cant justify it when mine runs so perfect, allbeit slow. i think your extra boost may have been the demise of it also, especially without a cooler, im just about to do the R32 cooler mod and scoop to mine.
toyotasurf.asn.au if you havent already

21-05-12, 05:34 PM
OK so research is well underway and the 1UZ is looking like the winrar at this stage.

Looking at approx $1500 for a new head and to re-ring and bear my 2LT-E and probably a solid few days/weeks worth of effort.

3L from what I've worked out so far isn't a straight swap over, something about CAS or the motor not being able to talk to the gearbox? Can't remember exactly, was reading it on nightshift. Pro here is that there's a good chance I could find one for cheep cheep somewhere but probably with high kms (not that important being a diesel I think but my mate is steering me away).

I have read that you can bore out the 2LT-E block and fit 3L crank and pistons for a 2.8L so that's an option, provided my block is OK and add buying crank/pistons & machining costs to above.

1KZ would be nice but these seem to go for upwards of $3k for a 2nd hander or even more for a reco.

So 1UZ plan would be to find a complete car as cheap as possible Soarer etc. Gearbox bolts onto Surf transfer with a few mods. Engine mounts can be bought from plenty of different places. Lots of wiring diagrams online (mate and I (mostly mate ) managed to wire up the 20v 4AGE in my old AE95 with a multimeter and minimal diagrams). Then drain and flush tank, fit 4runner handbrake assembly, external (or even intank) fuel pump and...

I'm slowly convincing myself, it's been the plan for this car since I got it but I'm supposed to be saving for a wedding/house. Nopics is used to it by now and doesn't have any complaints

21-06-12, 08:31 AM
Voice of reason has won out, saving for a house = more important than V8 Surf

Car was run a couple of times and bottom end, turbo etc seem fine so off with it's head

Worst one

3/4 cracked :knock:

Need to buy complete 3L head, 2LT-E headgasket/bolts and a new radiator (been told alloy>stock?). Waiting on messages back from some eBay people now to compare to local prices. If anyone's got any hookups or places they'd recommend let me know plz :)

21-06-12, 11:33 AM
ebay is almost always cheaper for this stuff, wouldn't even bother looking locally.

02-07-12, 12:06 AM
I have my truck for sale, I'm tempted to part it, wouldn't be interested in the motor?
If so pm me a offer, note I will include the alloy radiator I have, brand new never fitted

02-07-12, 12:59 AM
Already ordered everything last week :knock:

Complete 3L head $650
Alloy rad $190
Head gasket & bolts $150

eBay FTW :D

Need to get glow plugs, few new hoses/clamps and a couple of silicon bends to replace the plastic bits that fell apart.

Got everything else except the bolts & rad which should turn up in the next couple of days then I'll try and put it back together this week.

23-07-12, 12:21 PM
Had to wait for a couple of extra gaskets (venturi & timing cover) but she's all done and driving again now :D :D :D

Add about $65 to above for glow plugs and another $100 odd in bits and pieces so just under $1200 all up, think I did OK there :h5:

Starts up almost instantly now with the new glows and seems to run a bit better too, maybe due to all the EGR shit that got ripped out.

12-10-12, 09:59 AM
OK so 3 months later it hasn't all been smooth sailing.

When I did the bodylift originally I didn't drop the radiator back down and don't remember if I refitted the heat shields (pretty sure I didn't )

Anywho went out for a 4by and she started overheating again climbing a long slow hill FFFFFFUUUUU :knock: Managed to limp it out of the bush and got towed home.

So finally put the water temp gauge on it to see what it was doing. Soon as I started loading it up climbing she would get hot and not want to cool down again.

Dropped the radiator down 2", refitted the top shroud and added red coolant, (only had water in it before to see if there were any issue before buying coolant) Also pulled the viscous fan off and adjusted the bi-metallic stip and renewed the fluid.

Touch wood a couple of months later it seems fine. Have done a few test runs up Glenbrook hill and she won't go over 90. Only time I've seen any kind of heating up is after long freeway runs then coming to a complete standstill eg drivethru  even then it got up to 95, the AC thermo kicked in and it came back down.

Put a tank of diesel power thru it not long ago too and economy has come back to 12.5l/100 now :D

Prado phwoar!

08-05-13, 07:04 PM
Went camping up at Hill End last weekend and the overheating dramas resurfaced :knock:

Luckily with the temp gauge I was onto it pretty quickly. Still copped an exploding overflow to the face when I popped the bonnet

I think it's a combination of weight + 33s + 12.5psi boost (which creeps to 14 sometimes) + no bottom shroud.

Going to put a bottom shroud, top mount and transmission cooler on it next. On the way home I was a bit gentler with the right foot and let it lumber up the hills and it didn't get anywhere near as hot but she still isn't right for touring.

My favourite pic of her down at Nimmitabel again last year.

08-05-13, 08:14 PM
I have 2 r32 coolers with the ends taken off to make a little front mount for mine, but I've since sold my surf,
Can have them cheap
Or a gtir cooler 300x400 calsonic $45

What type of radiator did you get? The factory ones have a problem with the transmission cooler in the bottom tank almost completely blocking the lower hose outlet, its a common cause for overheating on these. The fix is to have a manual transmission radiator fitted with an external trans cooler.

Just an alloy eBay one, still has the internal trans cooler.

She hasn't overheated on me at all since last update. When climbing big long hills fully loaded it'll start to get warm but I've learned how to drive around the problem for now. Standing on the throttle trying to build speed before the climb and then staying hard into it on the kick down wasn't helping, slowly putting on speed and letting it labour up in a higher gear made a big difference. Still running 12.5psi and no bottom shroud. :O

Disclaimer: I'm no mechanic but believe it's due to the torque convertor slipping which heats up the gearbox oil and transfers said heat to the radiator which is already working hard by then. Fix is an external trans cooler which I hope to do at some point this year as well as finally fitting some FWHs.

No plans to sell or upgrade in the foreseeable future. Once my rolla's finished which could be another year or two the rate I'm going I'll hunt down a LS400/Celsior and have a crack at the 1UZ swap. Other than that the only other things I'll do is get the aircon going again and keep an eye out for a cheap ARB steel front bar, rock sliders, roof cage and maybe the rear wheel carrier.
