Pick up my new Disco on Wednesday.

It's a '95 Silver 3dr with Graeme Cooper 4.6L Rover V8.

No (decent) pics as yet, but here's a teaser from 1997 when it was first built.

Okay so some details have emerged.

Original owner buys it new in '95. Goes on no expense spared build in '97 with the mechanicals done by Graeme Cooper Automotive in Sydney and the guard cutting, suspension and a funky hydraulic sway-bar system done by Les Richmond Automotive in Melbourne.

Cunt keeps it right up until last year whilst owning a Disco 2 and 3 along the way. Buys a D4 in 2010, missus tells him to get rid of the 3dr and he sells it to the guy I'm buying it off.

Immediate plans:
- Fix body work. It has copped a canning from Menai runs and it needs to be repaired before it starts to rust.
- Bearmach step-sliders and light-bar.
- New flares. Old ones have seen better days and are brittle from sun damage.
- Draws in the rear for my shit and fridge slider so I can have cold beer.
- Remove hydraulic system and replace with normal swaybars with disconnects (unservicable, can't get parts).
- Plus other shit I can't think of right now.

This thing sounds like God is having angry sex. It's a cammed up 4.6 HSE bottom end with 3.9 heads and intake and a Bruce Davis tune. I fucking love it.

Here's the short list of goodies:
Old Man Emu suspension 2.5in raised
2in body lift
ARB Bullbar (modified to accept H/M) + ARB Rearbar
Warn 9000lb High Mount Winch
Maxi-Drive Rear Air Locker + Maxi-Drive Heavy Duty Rear Axles
Maxi-Drive 33% Reduction Gears + Defender High Range Transfer Box
33" x 12.5" Cooper Discoverer STTs (fuck the haters)
Safari Snorkel with K & N Air Filter
Hydralic Sway Bar Setup Front & Rear
Dual Battery System with New Deep Cycle Battery
The Long Ranger Fuel Tank (120L)
Custom Offset Steel Rims (widened Disco steelies)
IPF Spot Lights x2
Hot Water Shower And Pump

Are these things good? Or like a lot of land rovers, are they shit?
The mod list sounds awesome. I want to hear this "god having angry sex" motor.

has the 4.6 had the tophat conversion?
IIRC that's where they mod the bore sleeves to stop them coming loose?

Disco 1s are the easiest to modify especially for more hardcore stuff. They are built on the RRC chassis and even share some body parts with the Rangie. They do suffer from electrical gremlins like all Land Rovers of this vintage and the diffs are known to be weak (hence stronger axles in the back). Sort out the weak spots in the drivetrain and the fuckers are solid, it helps if you pick a good one in the first place too.

Own a bad Land Rover for your first one and you'll swear off them forever. Get a good'un and you'll never look back.

Looks like a tough rig with plenty of pricey mods. Look forward to some vids going up.

Is the front locked too?

Only locked in the rear for now. May look at putting twin ARBs in further down the track.

I can't wait to drive it. Good thing I've got a night run this Friday with the boys from work. I'll also put it on the flex ramp at work on Thursday and see what she'll do.

Anyone know what tyres the gaurds will take with/without chopping and a 2" lift?

Les Richmond Automotive has a comprehensive guide on their website.

http://www.lrautomotive.com.au/contents/en-us/d713.html

TYRE SIZE AND MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED.

A: Under 31” tyres in diameter on standard offset.

REQUIRE

Nothing these tyres will fit under most Land Rovers.

Note: Be careful of 31 x 10.5 tyres on sunrasia style rims as the offset of these rims is too far outward and can cause panel damage.

B: Between 31” to 32” in diameter on standard rim offset.

REQUIRE

Range Rover Classic will need to install a body lift kit of about 1”

Discovery I owners will also need to modify the rear wheel arch. (Use Wheel arch trimmer).

Discovery II owners will require no extra work

Defenders already run a 32" tyre from factory.

Note: Running 32” tyres on standard offset rims will decrease the amount of steering lock available. Eg: The vehicle will not turn as sharp as it does now.

C: Up to 33” in diameter on standard rims.

Defender can use 0mm rims here

REQUIRE

Range Rover Classic will not fit under the wheel archs!

Discovery I owners will not fit under the wheel archs!

Discovery II will not fit under the wheel archs!

Defender will fit set of 255 x 85 x 16 or 33" x 10" tyres. Turning circle will be affected.

D: Up to 33” in diameter on off set rims.

Range Rover classic, Discovery 1 and Defender use -25mm rims

Discovery II use +30mm rims

REQUIRE

Range Rover Classic and Discovery I will also need a 2” minimum body lift kit and will need to fit flares.

Discovery II owners will require fitting White Tiger kit Discovery 2 XL flare kit and +ve 30 offset rims preferably 16"x 8"

Defender will need to fit a set of White Tiger flare extensions

E: Between 33” to 36” on offset rims.

Range Rover classic, Discovery 1 and Defender use -25mm rims

Discovery II use +30mm rims

REQUIRE

Range Rover Classic and Discovery I will require a 2 - 2 1/2” body lift kit and will need to fit the XL White tiger flare kit.

Discovery II owners will require a White tiger 2" suspension dropping kit and White Tiger XL flare kit.

Flexi Flares are the go. Ant from Coffs 4Wd brings them in.
LPG or you'll be poor. Mine had a 3.9 with mildly ported heads, full exhaust, 33-inch muddies and Bruce tune and it would easily chew $120 in a week. I've still got the materials to make another set of sliders or two, made about 5 sets for guys on the AULRO forums and my car. If you're keen I could sell you the bits and you could finish them? Bearmach stuff is sooooo expensive.

You'll wanna correct the castor in the front if you go 2 and 2 lift, or you'll flog our front shafts, front pinion seals etc etc. Makes them drive like crap too. Mine was 2-inch spring lift, 33s and cut guards and it was awesome off road, plus it wasn't a million kms tall, still made it into shopping centre car parks no problems.

Discoverer STTs are good tyres, haters don't know what they're talking about. Alternatively I had Goodyear MTRs in mine, they were awesome.

I loved your Disco Boxer, I remember checking it out at all British day when you were selling it.
It definately needs a few things sorted and this will happen over the next few months.
Typical rich as hell Davis Tune, smells like a refinery when I crank it over.

I will be christening it tomorrow night with a Menai night run with the 4WD Action boys and then Mt Airly with the LROC.

Time for a long over due update on le heap.

So after discovering that there were a few issues with the T-case first time out (would not engage CDL 'easily') I decided to just leave things be, drive it back and forth to work and slowly sort out the issues.

Then it ran out of brakes.

Then I parked it up.

Then it ran out of rego.

Today I took it down to my mechanic to start the long journey back to good health. The aim here is to get it good enough to pass rego (I have till the 30th of November before a blue slip is required and I'll be fucked if I'm going through that arse raping). Then I will start working away on sorting the various issues and changing or taking out the various componentry I don't like or want.

After this it has a date with the diff joint as the rear diff is FUBAR. I'll have them remove the old Maxi-Drive locker and leave it open for now as I will be going with twin KAM electic lockers soon.

Fark, the previous owner must have been serious to hack the bullbar to fit the 8274!
Just realised it must have been a REALLY early update model, iirc Land Rover discontinued the 3dr not long after the facelift.

This is my daily and she's a real pig. Got nearly 400,000km on the Td5, shagged suspension yet still goes hard.
Highly recommend Bridgestone Dueller A/T D694s, on 20psi all day and never struggled.

Bad news: Front has a fair bit of slop in it and will need rebuilding shortly.

So I've got some decisions to make regarding this basket case.

To sort out the supension (and get rid of the stiff as all fuck stupid as shit shock/spring combo it has now) I'm looking at $1300.
Rebuild on the front diff is going to cost $1200.
Transfer case needs an overhaul. It's started leaking more than what's usually accepatable in Land Rover terms and it will no longer shift into low range or engage the CDL (the shifter just won't physically move). Looking at $1k+ there.
Cooling system needs to be overhauled. It overheated the other day and now the raditator is leaking. Not to mention a whole bunch of little things and I'm looking at close to $5k just to make this thing good to drive everyday and work properly off-road.

Do it continue to throw cash at this thing and get it mechanically A1 and be left with a body that's allegedly riddled with cracks, has a butchered radiator support (it really should have a new one stitched in), plus rust and some serious battle damage (not the usual "lol it's a 4WD" bumps and scrapes, this damaged should really be repaired).
Or do I chuck in the towel, strip it down, keep the good bits and throw them into a clean unfucked-with Disco 1 or Range Rover?
