Sorry about the disjointed photos everyone, between my iPhone not letting me cut and paste and my clunky work computer it's hard to get it all in order.

Ok so had some "excitement" yesterday. Was in the engine bay when i noticed the plastic bushing had dropped out of the steering column, and the shaft had about an inch of freeplay. The bushing that dropped out supports a bearing on the shaft. I called the local F100 spares joint and he didnt have one. Then my neighbour turns up and says "we can just machine one out of an old suspension bushing. I had some new bushings left over so away we went.

Bushings dont seem to like being machined. The plastic (noelethane??) tends to distort and grab. We couldnt keep it in the chuck till we put a small piece of round bar down the guts of it where the chuck holds it. All done now though.

Its in! What an absolute mission. Uneven driveway, had to drill a hole in the engine hoist boom for extra reach, lots of messing around.

Things to do,

exhaust, drive shafts, modify/fabricate alternator and power steering brackets, solve the riddle of the non ling up pulleys etc etc.

It hasnt been without drama though. The poxy headgaskets were leaking water down the side of the block, so for it first startup i put friggen radiator stop leak in it. Ive read that sometimes copper gaskets need this. Not what i wanted to do, and it did put some water in the oil, but its all sealed up now. But im onto my third oil change and it hasnt left the driveway yet. Which sucks.

Exhaust should be done monday, so i can actually run the thing without fear of the cops or the council. (Set off a car alarm over the road when i first started it)

It also gave me a fright when i put it in gear. No drive at all, forwards or reverse. Now i built the gearbox (C6), but ive never built one before. This ones got about $1600 worth of parts in it and should be good for 1000 hp or close (apparantly), so i was shitting bricks.

Then i realised the transfer case was in neutral. Put it in gear, started it up and it lurched forward like the demented shitheap it is!

Just have some concern now as to whether the alternator is charging. Found another alternator that already had the BB brackets attached (and hey it was nearly new when it was last used, in the late 90's i think) so i ran that one. But im only getting just under 12v on my volt meter now.

Heres some pics.

My neighbour is a retired mobile mechanic, and he dropped off a big box of new fan belts of all shapes and sizes for me. The alternator bolted straight up but the power steering needed some "custom" work. Neighbour Joe also machined a spacer for the water pump pulley so it all lines up. Nice one Joe.

It is a 521, or whatever 4.3 stroke and 4.39 bore gets you. (around 520 i think) Yeah P51's would of been cool, and i would of gone that way exept i had a set of ported iron heads and a set of unported head with new stainless oversize valves in them.

And yes, until its all sorted and dyno tuned, i wouldnt call it fast.

Wasn't super happy with the "average" welding on the exhaust either. But he didn't charge too much and I just want to get the thing on the road so I let it slide.

It's still pretty noisy, but I can actually drive it now! The shifter needs adjusting, currently the gears don't line up the way they should. The C6 has the lower first and second gears in it, and yeah first is real low. Should be good with 37's though.

Grab a pair of bushwacker flares for it. You'll have to cut the guards but they look tough as nails and you'll get that extra clearance you need.

fantastic mpg I bet

Especially when towing the boat

Its actually not as bad as you might think (not that ive acurately measured it) The big motor doing it easy doesnt seem to use much more than the 351 working hard. Unless you put your foot down that is.

Cheers Greg. C6 is still going strong. Just changed tranny fluid today for the Case IH tractor fluid and discovered the seal between the tranny and transfer case is leaking. Transfer case full of tranny fluid. Not super fussed as the Case fluid is rated for final drive/diffs as well. Was hoping to drop my stall speed a bit.

Need video proof of 6000rpm thanks.

Bringing out the redneck. Love it.

Awesome build, you'll have to park it next to a landcrab/pootrol to show excessive size. There is a f150 in my town with 37's on it, and with the lift they look equivalent to 33's on a patrol.

How do these things go on rutted out hill climbs etc? Or most a beach rig?

mrniceguy
22-07-12, 08:16 PM
Thanks fellas. Havent realy done much wheeling with it since the motor/wheel swap, just down the beach from lancelin to wedge. It will however hit 120 easily through boggy ruts etc. Cant wait to take it in the mud but my front diff seals leak like a sieve, and i have new bearings and seals to put in the front diff, which means doing "The Gears". And 4" raised front springs, and C's, and radius arm bushings. And while im there i may as well do the ball joints. Plus i want to get some sort of adjustable shock for the front. Coming from a motocross background i like the fox/king style of bypass shock with the adjustable compression and rebound so i can tune out the up and down wallowing it gets over whooped out sand tracks. Plus then i can tune out body roll when towing my boat. But that style of shock costs a fortune and will mean modified mounts of some sort. Not a huge deal, but just one more thing to do!

mrniceguy
22-07-12, 08:44 PM
Todays work! Had a quiet one. Put a length of 10mm stainless threaded rod through each exhaust. The idea is with the straight through mufflers a bit more back pressure reduces the noise a bit (or so my dyno tuner tells me). Well it made 2/10ths of SFA difference to this. I may have to try another length at 90 degrees to the one thats in there. Im fearing a lynch mob of neighbours.

I don't think sticking threaded rods through the exhaust would do a thing. Might need to add a different muffler, or move house.

add A LOT more muffler and / or park it out front of sooky resident's house and run it for 20 minutes where the council has no say in the matter.

Just curious, but have you always wanted one of these, it was lying around, got it at the right price, etc. Not my cup of tea but looks like you could have some fun in it and don't have to worry about denting it!

Edit, the photos have now loaded for me and I understand now. Looks awesome with the lift and big wheels.

Edit2, I need to get one of those letters sent to my neighbour who warms up his Ducatti with super cannon exhaust at 5 am.

Ive always liked them, and had a rubbish one years ago. They go ok with a 351 but the crappy 4 speed with granny gear lets them down I think, especially in the sand. Autos rock for 4wd I reckon. And they need cubes to even have decent performance. This will light up the 37's all through first so im happy with that.

Next step is fuel injection, then maybe rear mount turbo.

As far as the noise issue, i ignored the letter and nothing more has happened.

My initial comments were looking at the "photo when purchased"

Now I want a F100 on 37's! Nothing better than big tyres and lots of power on sand. Just ask the arabs!
