View Full Version : idea for next challenge

Dave
04-10-11, 09:50 AM
We could do a circuit based version of this challenge that focusses on what percentage of time you could get under (or closest to) the average for a given track.

Natsoft has a shitload of info on sprints for each track in Australia, it would be reasonably simple to compile an average for each track in australia, based on this info, which could then be used as the basis for comparison. Given the thousands of entries for each track it would have to go close to being a good relative basis for comparison.

It would take a bit of time to compile the averages, but not too hard, or really easy if natsoft would run the queries for us.

3 months to build, 6 months to improve. Up the budget slightly to 2k maybe.

Thoughts?

Also, I think there needs to be a restriction on tyres to something epically shitty like simex branded tyres, to stop people getting old semi-comps and the like.

So somehting on TV the other day that I thought was PF down to the ground. It was called something along the lines of "Put a Motor In It". basically put any vehicle motor (car/motorbike) engine in the strangest thing you can think of. Must be able to be driven 10 metres under its own power. LS1 into a bath tub?

I think the fairest way to find PFs fastest / best driver is to have a Go - Kart challenge.

Each state has there own Prelims at your Go - Kart track of choice.

Winner (top 3?) from each state gets flown to state of choice for Finale.

All entrants pay for there local kart day plus $20 - $50 for winners to be flown interstate

Only available to regular PF posters with a certain post count or time here.

This sounds awesome... But some form of parity system needs to be implemented with weight added to even the feild, otherwise 50kg hero's like Stocky will be the only ones left and us fat cunts will all be back markers.

What about a Sydney to Perth Shitbox Challenge?

Google maps sez it about 3,950km Sydney-Perth via the Barrier and Eyre Highways. I reckon a budget of $1,975 for everything including car, fuel, food, accomodation, everything (making it basically 50c per a kilometre).
Google maps also sez it should take 1 day and 19 hours or 42 hours. I reckon our armada of shiteboxen can do it in under 40.

The problem with building another car is space. So definately go the hire car. Or what about team builds. Get 2-3 people to enter a car together. Budget on the car could be a bit higher. And in sprints there are normally 6 run groups, so there is time to swap drivers and do any maintenance. What would be the fastest, best to drive, cheapest car? I think it should be a fairly lightcar after stripping all heavy shit out, rwd. VB - VL commodores are worth very little. Simple rollbar, plenty of spare parts.

I reckon in, but I'm not piloting. There will be a lot of nitrous involved. I wont feel safe riding it.

The ZX7 should do it stock as a rock. MCN reckons 11.2 off the showroom floor

Guess I am going to have to find another cheap bike.....

Lets just make it "as fast as you can go for $1300"?

I doubt 11.2, they dont even make 100 rwhp and weigh a fuckload compared with a 100rwhp 600cc sportsbike.

Maybe 10s for $1500

I'm gunna suggest chains/sprockets aren't included in the cost, being a safety item?

Doubt I could ride it that quick though.

i just dont see how it could be judged feasibly due to the different courses and times, concentrating on one course in particular could work given enough trial and error. however this comp has to be national, seems very difficult to manage.

I don't suppose there's any real way to do a Top Speed Challenge over a Mile or similar? I like the Texas Mile idea..

Think about it- lots of dodgy home-made aero, grills etc taped over with duct tape.. Some kind of cage and harness might need to be mandatory as I reckon 240km+ would be pretty easy to hit. Radar gun at the finish line to measure speed through the trap.

Either that or a 60 footer comp= lowest recorded 60' time wins. Its all about getting off the line, no shit given for actual ETs.

You need to be a <60kg motorcycle journo to get those sort of times.

Where would one do this? Aside from the Temora and Blue Mountains 1000mtr sprint thingo's you really couldn't do this anywhere else.
Our challenges either need to be 1/4mile - as the distance is the same regardless of what state you are in, or you have circuit races - and every state has a winner (or we all travel to the same racetrack).

I think eBay turbo would be the easiest way to get into the 11's comfortably, whether or not you could do it for the $ I have left I don't know.

I haven't ridden a bike in at least 6 or 7 years (due to being in hospital, work, etc). And I went and bought two bikes last week

I'd say leathers, helmet, boots, etc.

Why only $1100?

the biggest effort for me (after getting the bike out to Lak Gairdner I guess) would be convincing the nopics to let me get on a bike again. :)

I guess it would depend on the challenge, whether is was drag racing or salt lake.

It's an awesome week away. It is getting very hard to do with cars, the rules are very full on now (fire systems, multi-level race suits, crazy roll cages, etc) and then you've got a very long tow to get out there. But a bike can get thrown in the back of a ute or in a van and then you can sleep in the ute or van (or swag). Many cans at night around a fire, race all day, rinse and repeat for a couple days. Would be epic.
