Well I wanted a 4x4 of some kind to muck around in and drive to and from work. After looking at 11hundredmillion kinds of shit I had more or less given up on anything with under 500,000 klms being under the national debt of Greece. In a state of semi drunken tiredness I stumbled upon a cheap TJ. So rang the the guy up and picked up Jim to go and have a look at it. Old mate on the phone tells me its a good thing, we turn up and its a steaming pile of shite. Any way the idea kind of stuck as I had kind of wanted another FJ40. This gave me my SWB 4x4 and had a bit more comfort than an FJ.
So the search was on. After dinging up a Aussie Jeep forum I came a cross a my99 2 owner TJ with 130klm on the clock and full books. A couple of emails and some arm twisting on my part a deal was stuck so last night a mate and I drove down to Sydney to pick it up.

Mods so far.
Safari snorkel with K&N filter.
Headers,Hi-flow cat and 3" pipe all the way to the back.
Some kind of "Mopar" tune.
ARB Air compressor mounted in the engine bay.
ARB Air lockers in the front and rear diffs.
4:11 Diff gears.
Cant remember what kind but some kind of after market axles.
Rubicon express 4" lift.
Rubicon express control arms.
OME shocks.
Quick release sway bar links.
A new set of 33's and a new set of 31"s both on rims.
And prolly some other crap I've forgotten.

Long term plans are a tube winch bar and winch,Hardtop, rock sliders, body lift and some 35's or 38's...
I am off to the US on Saturday so will come back with some kind of shit for it lol.

LOL if you listen close to the P.F collective you wont ever buy any car ever made lol. I've heard your thoughts on Jeep thought so thanks for the offer.
Already has 4" lift and slip joint less H.D tailshaft.

Looks like a good buy, these things are very good offroad and with both diffs locked it will take you over some seriously rough tracks. Sounds like you already know of their downfalls but with the lockers you wont need to give it hell you can just crawl over obstacles and not break stuff.

12k. I drove a hard bargain though. Quite a few around for that kind of cash but it took a bit to find one with receipts for every $$ spent and all the known problems already fixed.
Stuff like the rads seem to split and this has just had a new rad put in.
I would guess normal market price for it to be mid teens.

Mr.P it's a around 12.5 ltr's per 100 so far...

Looks good dude. Leave it as is though. More lift and 35s will make it an unbearable sack of crap to drive. Theyre a really capable car with minor mods. I've seen a TJ with a 2inch lift, open diffs and 31-inch remoulds do all the tough tracks in the Watagans. When are we going to see Wooders?

I went for a ride in a TJ at Mt. Airlie which had that setup. 4in lift, 50mm body lift, long arm kit, 35s and twin locked, it was one of the most impressive rigs I've ever taken a ride in.
I ended up writing a feature on it for 4WD Action, issue 168, if want to get some ideas Uncle.

I have recently gotten my HJ because of camping/fishing/fucking around etc, do you blokes (no one specific) go and just find shit to drive through?

I got mine to get me places I want to go, not just 'cause I can?

If that's what y'all do, that's cool, I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around it

Maybe I should go out driving with a few of the local fruitloops to see if it horns me up, but I doubt it?

Each to their own.

Some people have a fast street car just cause its cool, and others have a track car to run good times and get enjoyment from that.

I had a D40 Navara for work and ended up taking it offroad, only went camping once the rest of time I would drive 2/3 hours out just to find mud and fun tracks where I would get stuck for hours. The challenge of getting through obstacles that you logically shouldnt really be able to, that was my idea of fun. Ended up selling it to get something smaller and better for bush-bashing, a TJ seems to be the go...

If you haven't taken your fourbie out for a bush bash yet I highly recommend you give it a go. Doesn't even need to be hardcore tracks, I had a ton of fun pushing through beginner level tracks in the wet.

This. It's all about the fun. I've got hundreds of klm's of tracks just outside my front door. On days I don't feel like going out on the WR I can jump in the jeep and have some fun.

Fair enough :D

Just something I haven't really tried. Was too paranoid about getting it hooked up somewhere I couldn't get out of when I ran out of talent/balls I guess?

Plus I have a really bad habit of fucking with things and snowballing the fuck out of any project, just don't want the cunt to become unusable.

I get my licence back at the start of the New Year so I might try some of the local stuff...

O.K so I do a bit fly fishing and other camping type stuff so I had been thinking about how to set up a camper I could use when its just me and I don't want to pack a tent. After a while I started to think about the old school Hatch hutch type thing. So today I got a sheet of form ply and did some cutting.
You could build it all for around $200 but I made do with stuff I had floating around the shed.
The back of the jeep. I whipped out the seatbelts and set them aside in my tool box. I also pulled out the rear seat mount and set it aside for later.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7762.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7771.jpg
The Ply. I used this stuff as I know its very strong and wont warp any time soon. Here it is marked out ready to cut. If you do it the way I've done here it will leave you with enough left over to make a start on some draws should you want to later on. Note I've marked it in White paint pen.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7764.jpg

The reason for this is I have one of those skillet saws with the LAZER guide thingos. If you mark it with white then chuck on a pair of red safety glasses you can see the guide very well and get a nice clean cut.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7767.jpg

I was working alone so I used the off cuts to help support as I was cutting.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7766.jpg

Here we are with the first section fitted. I dug some longer bolts up from my tool box and drilled some holes in the ply so I cold bolt though the ply and into the seat mount points.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7770.jpg

Next I got some tie down point bolts I had floating around the toolbox and fitted them to the second section of Ply.My plan was to use some tie downs and clip them on to the seat belt points then the eyes as a support. I cut them both lenghts of base to 900mm long as I am a short arse and 900 fits the back of the jeep well. So you end up with 1800mm long base to work with. You can make it longer by going further toward the front seats but I wanted to keep that space for storage.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7763.jpg

After fitting these I thought why not use the off cut I had used as a support while I was cutting as a brace under the end to give it some more strength while I was sitting on it or getting in and out
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7783.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7784.jpg
Next I cut out a small section for the door latch and the seat belt lower tabs.
Bit of a bugger about the chipping but I aint not carpenter!
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7781.jpg

This is what you come out with..
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7779.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7778.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b192/Martin_U/IMG_7777.jpg
Next was just to place some piano hinge along the join and you are done. You could use any kind of hinge I just happened to have some floating around. For some reason the photo of this didn't come out but I get another one.

Thats about it really. Chuck in a swag add some tent polls and you are done.
I weigh 80kg and it has no problems with me sitting on the end to get in and out.

yeah mate, i did. sold it for $18750! was a cunt of a fucking thing.

ecu blew up around 100000kms and it sat in tynan jeep kirrawee from the start of november till february. cost me just under 3k in repairs also.

only used to get 250kms to a full 72litre (i think thats what it was) tank on 22" rims..

i had the glass slider windows also, they were pretty good but fuck theyre expensive to buy new!

i was considering buying another one only to throw a ls1 into it, info found here http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/tj_swap.htm

the idea is playing in my head heaps, want a hunting/4wd rig that will take a bit of an offroad track. theres one for sale on ebay with a ford 5L in it for 16k.. just dont want the same headfucks as the last thing gave me

I get about 320 out of a tank around town and 220ish in the bush with 33" wheels and 4:11 diff gears. I am getting ready to do an injector swap to some VX V6 commode onse. I've got them I just need to get the plugs to suit. It gives it alittle more power but mostly is supposed to be quite a bit better on fuel due to the much better spray pattern. Stock injectors are just a single pin hole and the commode has 4 holes.

New Rubicon Express shocks and sway bar links came today. Going down to Sydney to pick up a warn sump and trans skid plate on Saturday morning before working on man cave so I might call into Wooders and get a body lift kit while I am in the neighbourhood as the old girl really could so with some more space between the tyres and the flairs.
I also ordered a new frameless soft top with tinted windows and new door uppers. I think it might of been a blessing that Allied fucked the hard top I bought. After having it on the car for a week I kind of prefer the soft top. The hardtop seems to keep the heat in the car for a lot longer than the softtop did. Seeing as A/C was an option with all cars ordered as a soft top and I can't be arsed putting it in it makes sense. Well thats the story I am going with..

nice jeep. you're selling it?

if you go bigger tires you might want to think about gearing - although I ran 4.10s on my 35's for a while before I got bigger tyres, it was ok. I had a an extra low 4:1 cog in my transfer case tho
