View Full Version : MAZDA BPT into a ??? project

11-09-12, 12:10 AM
this story begins with a facebook post... Cypher, a workshop in Perth's southern suburbs had shut it's doors and the administrators were liquidating...

I was trolling the list of parts and stumbled across a Mazda BPT 1.8L motor. I used to have one of these in a 323 so at $50 I couldn't pass it up.

Here is the receipt for proof.

Transport back to the workshop cost more than the motor, but I assume that isn't included.

And here she is, complete bar fuel rail. Thankfully the 'loan car' from my workshop actually has a complete BPT stored in the boot... in pieces :D

And I have access to looms, ecus, bosch 040 in a 323 cradle, engine mounts and lots of goodies that a mate who used to play with these cars has sitting in his shed. Pricing them up might be the hard part!

So now all I need to find is a cheap 323/laser or 121 to get this into!

We're thinking 121 > BG 323 > Laser Wagon > Any other laser

Oh and pray that this thing runs... turns over OK...

11-09-12, 12:14 AM
Definitely needs to go into 121.

11-09-12, 12:15 AM
Actually I am pretty sure Scali is going to bugger off his soon for virtually nothing. I will ask tomorrow.

This would be perfect, already has an "I Know TJ" sticker

KA laser for lightness.

11-09-12, 12:34 PM
KA laser for lightness.

Lots to do to a KA laser, you need to shave the chassis rail to fit the 1.8L, custom mounts, run efi fuel lines and modify the fuel tank to install a fuel pump (EFI for that shape was restricted to the BD Familia 1.5 Turbo... very very rare)

121 seems the best bet for lightness with some modifications required

BG 323 / KF-KH laser would bolt straight in, loom plugs in (one wire needs changing?)

BF Mazda (KC-KE Laser) I have done before mating the loom was the hardest part

Needs maor bubble.

A registered sleeper one.

i should buy one and pop it into my sisters car. she has a "carla zampatti" laser, it's a KC

edit: no, KB

Still hunting the quokka, gumtree etc for something with rego for $500

The asking price for a manual 1.5L efi bubble seems to be 3k. WTF

what about a festy? will it fit in one of those too? festys seem cheaper than 121's

13-09-12, 04:19 PM
I don't think it will fit in a Bubble without severe cutting of the chassis rail(s). BP is just too long for the narrow bay of the bubble... :(

I looked into this swap for my 121 but it all sounded too hard. B5 DOHC + turbo would fit and use the B3 gearbox.

No cutting of rails required apparently, need to notch one corner of the sump to fit an axel. box bolts up

well if they fit in those festys will they fit in the older boxier 121/festys?

Cool engine.

My first car was a GB Meteor that I turbo'd the E5, after cracking several pistons, breaking Second gear twice, I seriously looked at putting one of these in there but it just looked like a mission.

13-09-12, 07:44 PM
Kia rio wagon. Uses a variant of the Bp motor stock. Bolt in proposition that I looked into doing a few years ago.

Ford KA the ugliest car in the world

14-09-12, 10:54 AM
There was a purchase last night... Of the funtop variety ;)

15-09-12, 01:39 PM
As in Mazda 121 "shades" variety?

Gold. Good combo!

16-09-12, 02:24 AM
Hey mate, I have a complete KC laser with a few bits and pieces like interior loom adapted to BPT wiring, fuel pump, ect, that you could use.
Let me know.

16-09-12, 05:21 AM
OOOOH yes!

Trollolloll 121 cometh

16-09-12, 08:53 AM
this is so awesome. sell it to me when you are done!

16-09-12, 01:58 PM

skip to 5 min mark

Of coarse it has been done, In fact my mate did one into a festiva (Same chassis as 121) and did a low 13 stock..

^^^ good to see one in right hand drive, all the ones on google are LHD

plan is as follows

- do what we have to in terms of mounts
- 121 charging loom
- bpt loom (hopefully the one from the KC)
- lift pump to engine bay surge tank, then an efi pump to the rail
- 323 injectors, fuel rail, tps, and jap ecu (good for 147kW on BP98) from spare parts box
- keep stock turbo on the engine for now, boost it with a t-peice or possibly a donated boost controller
- standard 323 intercooler from spare parts box, mounted in bumper just in front of turbo (hopefully with some bed frame piping)
- standard 121 radiator, can grab a $90 alloy civic radiator off ebay if needs be
- spare 323 bellhousing, $50 626 gearbox (yet to aquire but working on it), spare shafts, HD clutch and flywheel out of the parts box

- mx5 or similar vintage 114.3x4 wheels (gotta scan the gumtrees)

that setup on paper should be good for 100kW over standard (1.3 carby engine says 47kW on redbook), in an 800kg car (less when we remove spare wheel and tools, possibly rear bench seat)

stage two mods would be a microleb, chial 38mm external and gt28, but that is a bit more involved and we want to get this running in the next month... probably after competition is finished but better late than never

17-09-12, 03:12 PM
You cunts are fucked.

17-09-12, 04:06 PM
holy shit missed the turbo when i first posted (and the writing on the plenum). this thing is going to haul arse. got to love the 13 4 1300 competition bringing out cars like this.

23-09-12, 07:32 PM
Performance progress has been slow thus far. I am still waiting for the right gearbox to come around.

Yesterday I gave the car a quick and dirty cut and polish and ran over all the bumpers with trim detailer and painted the wipers (complete with overspray onto my freshly polished bonnet)

Polished rear quarter compared to unpolished boot lid

Thought I was onto a winner this weekend. Spotted a 1990 astina SP in the gumtrees for $200, running.

you beauty I thought... Would stop me raiding my mates spare parts bin for quite a few items and the bits that I can use would be:

- G-series box which I need, and a HD clutch, shafts etc
- all the mounts and cradles for mounts
- efi gear, pump, wiring, fuel filter
- Fuel cap (121 only had an emergency cap)
- Drivers side mirror (121's is missing)
- intake witha pod filter, spare afm, ignitor, dizzy, spare BP motor
- window wipers, various brake and reverse lights
- full exhaust with extractors - could be chopped up and used for the 121

Of course it had some drawbacks, I was told over the phone it had an expired yellow, hadn't been started for a year, he'd sold the front seats, and the tyres and battery were flat.

Nothing I didn't think I could handle so we loaded up my mates x-trail for the 40 minute trip with some 17s, a drivers seat, the battery out of the 121 and a $20 permit to drive it to the workshop.

First problem:
It was bogged in the grass
No worries, snatch strap on the towbar and pull it out

Second problem:
121 battery wasn't able to turn the motor over
No worries, jump start it with the xtrail

Third problem:
It's still not turning over.
Leave it to charge for 10 mines
Still nothing
Tap jumper cables together.,.. no spark. FUUUUU
Grab new jumper cables from the neighbour
Yay, turning over like a mad dog.

Okay why isn't it starting?
Check spark... sparks.

Maybe it's empty? Grab 5L of fuel in a lawnmower can.
Still can't hear fuel coming through the rail... wire the pump up to the stereo constant power

Still nothing

Checked the AFM flap was moving.

Got a bit of action when we sprayed lynx into the pcv hose

But still no start

So after 2 hours we drove home empty handed. Old mate says he'll try and get it started with his mates.

But yeah, $200 was money well spent for a running bp/g-series combo but I'm not so keen to spend another $100 towing it when I have no idea if the box is ok.

Might offer old mate $100 and see if I can get a $100 tow but it was very disappointing, and I'm not sure I want to spend that sort of coin.

So retreated back to the workshop and spent money on the bits I thought I'd get for free.... fuel cap, mirror, globes.

And for the hell of it I put the spare 323 seat into the 121.

So yeah... With the little safety issues fixed I think I will just daily this for now until I can get the s15 rego'd. And I'll keep looking for a bloody gearbox

23-09-12, 08:30 PM
I feel for you having to spend the day with Morgan.

03-10-12, 10:31 AM
s15 is drivable again so it's powercruise this weekend then getting stuck into the 121

got a couple of bits coming

Free under car surge tank from an antilag member, came out of a ke20

$25 low pressure pump. claimed 130L/hour at 6psi

Took me 2 weeks to decide whether to go with a second hand VL turbo pump for $45 or a brand new audi copy pump for $50. In the end I grabbed the VL pump as it has barbed fittings. The audi would have required more cash spent on fittings. 10 cent hose clamps ftw

A mate says he is bringing up a bootful of stuff from his old tx3 up from collie this weekend... intercoolers, injectors, ECUs, t3 manifold, t25 dump pipe

Hopefully some goodies in there!

03-10-12, 12:14 PM
FUN Top!! FTW!

03-10-12, 08:01 PM
Awesome, just awesome.

04-10-12, 11:24 PM
I'm liking this!

04-10-12, 11:52 PM
How many dollars do you lose for not telling your wife about car? :P

05-10-12, 12:05 AM
She knows. I might be playing it down a bit as a group project :P

05-10-12, 12:08 AM
It is a group project, we're all behind you (but giving no financial/physical assistance)

05-10-12, 08:52 AM
You're using the car as a test bed for building synergies and networking opportunities.

11-10-12, 02:10 AM

Had to use the 121 tonight because the s15 has a broken driveshaft... Anyway I'd left it at the workshop for a couple of weeks and I opened the boot and under a tarp I found a couple of bits...

$50 2.5" s15 exhaust bought for pits... didn't fit s15 could be perfect for 121

a mate had heard about the project and dropped off his 323 intercooler and some old wheels (15x6 +38), yet to see if they fit

30-10-12, 12:11 AM

A boot load of goodies... T28, BP26 ECU, BP26 AFM, Fat cooler, Injectors and rail, and some other fancy manual boost controller stuff...

All free... dunno how I'll account for it in budget, suspect the competition will wind up before this is running but meh, going to be fun anyway :)

That thing is tiny! Love it.

the deadline is the least important part of the build.

05-01-13, 11:00 PM
Nice ... im currently putting B6T into a KA :D nice work

06-01-13, 05:16 PM
b6t is a good choice for the KA, you have to cut the subframe for a bpt

should have towed that Astina SP in retrospect

01-02-13, 01:44 AM
got the box!

ford laser kc/ke fwd turbo, imported from SA, came with a freshly machined flywheel and almost new hd clutch

also picked up a 1995 festiva hub and brake kit, converts it to 4x100mm and 235mm vented front rotors, with an integrated swaybar in the rear torsion beam $100 but i'm keen to chalk that one up as safety equipment

07-05-13, 07:06 AM
How is this going?

07-05-13, 09:56 AM
I have a bunch of bits all sitting there to do this, will probably tow it down to collie in may and get stuck into it with a mate down there. Problem is I'm doing post grad clinical pharmacy and that will be sucking up a lot of my spare time for the next 8 weeks as Ive basically ignored it for the whole year.

The mate from collie popped the motor in his mx5 so I leant him my $50 motor. It was down compression in one cylinder to start with but we ran it for a bit and compression came up. Hydraulic lash adjusters etc probably bone dry from sitting so long.

Another setback is one of the left side suspension mountings is ovalled because the weld was broken on the nut so its basically jiggled around. Discovered it after replacing a cv didnt fix all the knocking from the front left and now occasionally it changes direction when the camber of the road changes. I have debated fixing it vs buying a bubble because obviously 200-250hp is only going to up the stakes.

We think we'll try welding some 6mm plate in there and using a longer bolt to see if that can reinforce it enough. Using a bigger bolt and drilling out the hole and the bushing to suit is another option...

07-05-13, 02:36 PM

Pic with mx5 wheels on the front (hubs converted to 4*100) mazda steelies on the back... I have full sets of each but 2 shit tyres on each pair lol

Also have tein coilovers for it, might chuck the fronts in for a giggle as the 4 wheels, gearbox and turbo bits sitting in the boot have dropped it a bit!

22-03-14, 11:07 PM
Cool car. A mate has one of those pop-up headlight astinas running a BPT. It fucking hammers. Lunches gearboxes though, he had to get one built with straight cuts.

Funny fact - I used to work for Hymans back when they had a branch in Brisbane. Best fkn job I've ever had :(

01-04-14, 09:34 PM
this thing is cool... i have a spare B6T (well 2) that you now have me thinking what i can throw it into

02-04-14, 11:56 AM
I take it there are no updates on this little beastie?

02-04-14, 12:12 PM
The funtop was too broken to do it to... One of the suspension arm mountings was fucked, my 'mates' ripped the roof, and I ran out of patience and put it on Gumtree.

All of the motor/box/ go fast bits are sitting in my shed so there will come a time when I pick up a 121 bubble and continue.

Just currently have other priorities (new son, r34 etc)

Greg Rust
02-04-14, 02:02 PM
R34 build thread?

02-04-14, 03:27 PM
Yeah definitely - good bit of kit!

NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo!!!!!! Fun Top!!!!!
