View Full Version : 13's for $1300 barina sb?

cunts, ive bought this for $300:

http://i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp138/sloth_mk1_cav/barina1_zps8aa116fb.jpg

my plan is to gut the thing, like seriously, no interior bar a seat and clocks, big holes in stuff, and perspex windows, and add a 2.0 calibra engine. does the car have to be roadworthy? and reg'd? cos that blows $700 of my budget.

advice?

ta.

If you can sift through the Chav-Spec rubbish some of the UK Opel/Vauxhaul forums have a lot of info on these things. Wealth of parts commonality between the GM Family I and Family II engines.

Subscribed. I have a soft spot for these. I found the Mother in law a decent one of these things and she liked it so much she put it through a lot of plate glass, an office block and a heap of marble tiles. Fair effort really. Been almost 4 years now and she hasn't driven since. Good luck with it!

Did they change the firewall on or something on these? The printer I used to work for had 5 SB Combos and the one I usually used couldn't fit my steelcap boots in the driver's footwell. Yet no issue with the other, newer, ones on the fleet.

later post 2000 have totally different underpinnings.

So what is involved in the Calibra conversion?
use the calibra engine, box, loom, ecu, use corsa gsi driveshafts, 1 mount is made, the rest are stock barina, 9 wires gets it running. really easy conversion.

SRi was from later series.
GSi was the sporty from this even more appalling series. I had a GSi (16v 1.6 they were) as a supplied company car for a year or so, fucken awful rancid pork chop it was. Think Swift GTi, except an ape-like driving position and a characterless engine.

Sloth
17-01-13, 07:29 PM
sorry but were you sat in the car looking at the gps? nah didnt think so. and fuck bmw, the e36 m3 was shit.

heres the math:

Speed @ Limit 1st 36.18 Mph
Speed @ Limit 2nd 59.46 Mph
Speed @ Limit 3rd 86.78 Mph
Speed @ Limit 4th 113.66 Mph
Speed @ Limit 5th 173.57 Mph

calculated using this:
http://slindborg.hostei.com/gears/index.php

195/45/15

gearbox f20 w5a

max rpm 6700

then using this:

http://slindborg.hostei.com/topspeed/TopSpeed.php

enter:
oEfficient of Drag cD 0.35
Frontal Area of Car Mē 1.638 - yes i calculated that.
Peak Power / Power @ Limiter Bhp 173bhp.

Desired Top Speed 160 Mph

result:

Predicted Top Speed 161.19 MPH
BHP needed at the wheels to achieve Desired Top Speed 169.19

therefore: suck shit.

Tbh, don't totally hate that and have some corsa hate... Apart from absolutely shitful cabrio we got loaned, sisnopics wanted one, advised to buy coty xc, nice, serviced and all, 4-5 yo at the time, was a fairly genuine gm experience. persistent electrical, trim, no start bullshit. In gm fashion, after all replaced and a series of hissy fits, doesn't seem to be exploding but still randomly surprises her with small stuff like the indicator or wipers not working. Personally, would not beat with a barge pole.

vn with standard sc sicness mods, stockish anywhere from 160-180hp, long stretch somewhere around the place saw just over 200. There was just a bit left in it but suspension was terrifying (so last top speeder). And the road turned eventually. vn also likely a bit heavier than sb...

Couldn't be fucked doing the math due to 4 beers, i'll use simple analogy and go meh, i'll wait and see, be an interesting project... More lol at the moderator on the chav forums, just makes me go what the fuuuuc.... seeing a bunch of dudes sharing love for sb's, and there's a lot of them there!

Nice work anyway mate, I don't get it but it's a good education into the seedy world of chav corsamania!

its funny what people have.

i'd arranged a decent red calibra as a donor car. the owner wanted $500 and it was a good std car. late model dispak coscast too. he messed me around for ages, and in passing mentioned to one of the lads at work i was looking for one.
his response? "got one at home, its an insurance write off that was fixed then the owner found out it couldnt be registered. if you want it its $150"

so, expecting something totally fubar, this morning i drove 20 mins to collect this:

I'll be the first to come out of the calibra closet and say I thought the awd t seemed like an awesome bit of kit. But being in beef and HV8/Ls land, they never had a chance so just don't hear/see people doing them. Still think they look cool and a decent achievement for it's time.

Dolly Sprints are shit. There's an interview with Ralph Broad describing all the problems they had trying to run them as race cars - the heads held on with a single row of slanted studs...
Certainly not the first 4v head or alloy wheels... Maybe for a shitty pom econobox.

Cool.

And rover v8 ought to fix the reliability issue...

Ls could make it fun though.

Dolly sprint 1973, Escort RS1600 1970... So no.

actually were both wrong:
The first mass-produced car using four valves per cylinder was the British Jensen Healey in 1972 which used a Lotus 907 belt-driven DOHC 16-valve straight-4 producing {(54.6 kW/liter, 1.40 bhp/cid}.

tanken from wikipedia.

apparently the escy doesnt count as its not mass produced but hand built by avo in ockendon, with engines by cosworth.

but then, also from wiki:
As a result of this new engine, the Dolomite Sprint has a claim to be the world's first "truly mass-produced" multi-valve car. While other multi-valve engines (notably the Lotus 907) were produced in volume, they were not used in mass production vehicles until after the introduction of the Dolomite Sprint
