Hi all,

Every forum I use, I use a unique email address that is sent to a catch-all on my domain. That way, if my email address is leaked, I know who leaked it.

Today, I've received the same spam email, 3 times - one for each of the following forums:

- Performance Forums
- Australian LS1 and Holden Forums
- Boost Cruising

Check your mailbox; there's you received the same email from "Bargains AU" - "Your car is going to LOVE you for this!"

I only received this spam from Australian, automotive-based forums.

I'd appreciate if the forum owners could comment on this. Are all of the above run by the same owners?

Have the forums been compromised, or have our email addresses been sold for advertising?

Hi new guy. No this forum is not run by the same owners.

Ironic post about spam is ironic.

The Chinese sold our e-mail addresses.

EDIT: sent Shermuz the headers.

Got the spam email here too.

So I sent Shermuz the headers, but did some investigating of my own.

E-mails sent out of an e-mail marketing site called MooSend.com which requires importing of addresses in some fashion, for which someone would have had to export the database of each forum.
We can rule out some new exploit for vBulletin, as OP mentions Boostlosing is affected and they run IP.Board (albeit heavily modified).
My guess, without doing much more reading into it, is that there was a database breach on previous software versions of both, and they've just sat on the data until now.

im not sure its got anything to do with us, but i've emailed the mail provider and id recommend you all lodge spam complaints with them. according to their policy they only have a 1% spam complain tolerance, you could shut them down real quick.

so i just spoke to moosend and they would like everyone who received a spam email to forward it (with a 1 line spam complaint) sarah@moosend.com and compliance@moosend.com ... just forward it and write something on the top like "this is spam". the more people that do this the more likely these guys will get shut down, so everyone do it asap please

from the mail provider moosend.com anti spam policy

https://moosend.com/anti-spam-policy/

2. All emails must contain, in a clear and explicit manner, information with regard to the sender’s identity or the identity of the entity on whose behalf the email was sent, such as that entity’s trade name, registered address or phone number, as well as a valid address.

4. All emails must state the reason the recipient is receiving the message. For example, “You are receiving this message from ABC Company because you signed up for our email list at www.abc.com.”

Anti-spam spam sent.

Ironically, my spam reporting email bounced because their Google-hosted e-mail thought it was spam. Forwarded from my GMail and I had a response in 5 mins to say they had banhammered the account.

And I was about to say the same, oh the ironing of the email spammer bouncing my email because it had an email address identified as coming from a spammer in it.
