    Good Canberra Mechanics?

Ok I posted this here because I couldnt think of where to put it in the technical section. As Im asking about shops not about technical stuff.

Anyways, From what Ive gathered from other people I think one of my HLA's might be dead. (constant tapping from the engine up top) So Does anyone in Canberra know a place that does good work and know their stuff? So I can get this problem sorted out.

Ive heard good things about Metro Car Care and Skyline performance and Trojan. Does anyone have any experiences from them or know of any other good places ??

    thx in advance

I'm interested to see any replies to this too, my car needs some serious TLC in the way of CV joints, timing belt and a decent go over...

I went to Reliance Automotive in Fyshwick (Mazda specialists, more rotary than pistons though) a few years ago with mine and they did a reasonable job. I haven't heard of any consistently well recommended places in Canberra, everyone seems to have their own favourite. I've never heard two people say the same place is good!

I could tell you my ideas on where not to go and why, but I dont think I can do that on here. Metro Car Care I have heard some good things about but only because the guy who runs the place owns a 200sx, works on a lot of them and knows his way around them so for someone with an sx he would be a good choice. I personally wouldnt go near Skyline performance, there are a lot of places around that are trying to cater for the import market - they are people cashing in on an image rather than establishing a good name through reputation and good work. *cough*3vo*cough*

The two places you mentioned seem to be popular with younger- japanese-car-driving folk, and unless its urgent I would say ask around as many people as possible (preferably older), and you might find out a more reputable place to get the work done.

    GasTune

The guys at GasTune in Tuggers did the engine and fitted the Haltech in the ET I used to own.

They did a fine job, had no problems with either the engine or the ecu afterwards and since I have taken the truck there for a tune.
Why should I change my name? He's the one who sucks.

    Where to go?

I have heard nothing but raves about Jakes Performance. He is apparently the man when it comes to performance mods. I havent been there myself but have heard from a number of people.

I take my car to Sydney for dyno tuning but Im lucky to have a dad who is a registered mechanic with many years experience (even did a FJ20T conversion in a TX gem from scratch).

As for a certain rotary performance place in Fyshwick (already mentioned) I asked them to look at my car for 2 secs when my car failed to start and was told they were too busy and couldnt look at it for 2 weeks. I ended up fixing it myself in about 5 mins.

Doesnt J's racing do some kind of import/jap work now?

I probably wouldn't go near Fast & Furious Imports either, for the same reasons

but don't write off Skyline Performance as being like that, I've heard nothing but good things about them, and not just from Skyline owners. If they weren't in Mitchell I'd be taking my car there (but I live in Tuggers)...

I'm the same as Nucci, quite a few bad stories so I can't name names. Everything from missing a dud injector while tuning through to setting half my interior on fire!

The only person I have found who I trust locally is Graeme Silk from out Queanbeyan way. Unfortunately he just rebuilds race type motors and doesn't do general mechanical work.

If it was me I would get a couple of opinions and quotes from the place people recommended above.

I had almost the same thing happen...then I said to them "You advertise that you service Mazda performance vehicles right?" They said yes so I said "Well it's only a 1.8 NA car but it's still an official Mazda performance vehicle..." Were reluctant to do any work at all as it wasn't fast enough for them but did do a good job once they put the spanners on it. Funny thing is that it's quicker than standard early series RX's and there were plenty of them at the shop...Hence why I'm also looking for somewhere else...

Ditto GSRMan about repco auto repair in mitchell, cheap and my car runs better than when I use to pay a fortune getting it serviced at the manufacturer.

Thanks for the info all. I went to repco in mitchell today and they had a quick listen to the engine. They said one of my hlas was dead and it would cost at least 1000 to replace all of the hlas. So I have a few things to consider. I posted a thread in the technical forum. Anyways they seemed to be pretty knowledgable about the engine(one of the mechanics used to work at a mazda dealer)
So I'd say if you have a mazda it wouldn't hurt going there. Pretty friendly.

They're one of my sponsors for my rally car, so take this with a grain of salt, but:

Total Traction Services - Gillott Street, Belconnen (Kinda behind the Shell Servo and the Police Station in Belco there). (02) 6251 3115

Michael and Thomas are great guys, who have experience with heaps of different vehicles. They took over from George Strezlecki Motors (who used to be a Volvo specialist), and are now specialising in 4WD stuff, but are frequently called on to service for high profile rally teams when they are in Canberra, so they know they're way around newer turbo all wheel drive stuff too.

They have a 180B rally car, and have previously had rotary rally cars...

And they're good blokes. And a good alternative if you're on the north side.
Right now I'm eating scrambled egg. With a comb! Out of a shoe!
