This - the 4.2's shit timing chains

Mate bought a V8 A8, non S spec with a "dead starter motor" so it wouldn't fire for cheap

Thought he was laughing when he found it had been disconnected.. there was a reason they didn't want it being turned over.

I've been looking into the audi A8/S8 as my next car, prices have dropped massively. Redbook says the RRP was over $200k new on the S8. The S8 has 450HP but looses a lot due to carbon build up on the intake (direct injection). The 4.2 twin turbo TDi is almost as quick with a flash tune.

I thought they were supposed to be reliable?

I've always had difficulty working out which ones were the duds (chain guides etc). Apparantly the RS4 was a different donk and didn't have the problem?
This is my sig. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My sig is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My sig, without me, is useless. Without my sig, I am useless.

I haven't been in VAG aids land for a while. The early-mid cam belt driven 4.2s are good, tuneable especially if you get S6 bits. However their chassis is old, so really only good for a hot rod/swap in kind of thing.
I don't know much about the S8, but if it's like the B7 RS4 FSI, then it's a good thing. Just because it has the same displacement, doesn't mean it should be confused with the other timing chain 4.2s.
