    Vintage drag racing photos.

Some cool old-school drag pics. There were some pretty wild looking machines around in days gone by! Enjoy.

    Thank you.

Always thought "Little Red Wagon" was special ever since I saw it in a book about cars when I was about 8 years old.

I love those crossed-up altereds. One of my fondest memories of Castlereagh was watching Jim Reed (not Read) get out of shape about 2/3rds of the way down the track. Although he was all crossed up and with the back wheels about a metre off the ground he somehow got it straightened out and still went thru the traps at 180+

They should start CAA (Cheap Ass Anomynous) i.e. "Hi, I'm John and I've been 4 weeks now without buying cheap crap and blaming China for my own poor judgement"

Very cool pics indeed. Two questions:

Anyone care to tell me why some have their front wheels in the air, and the rear tires smoking?
Also, why do some of them have epic lift kits for the front end?

Awesome. Love seeing the 60's dragsters with the driver behind the rear wheels smoking the bags. It's like stupid and awesome at the same time

With the "Rambunctious" sedans did they move the rear wheels forward about 1m in order to do easier wheelies or was there another reason?

they moved the rear wheels back (edit yeah i mean forward) to get better weight transfer over the driven wheels, the wheelstands are a byproduct of that but not the aim. Still, if you front wheels arent touching the ground they aren't causing drag.

It took a while to figure out that spinning tyres weren't as good as a slipping clutch..

    Fuckin great pics. Cheers.

am pretty sure it was to do with weight transfer -

higher front = more weight on back wheels

Man they are some great shots... even if I have seen most of them before.

You've got some bitchin' Gassers in there... love the Hererra & Sons Austin A40... blown big block Chev back in those days. The Kohler Bros Anglia was another competitive car. The Gates Speed Shop '33 Willys injected big block Gasser actually still exists, unrestored, nearly just as it is shown in the photo.

The Mooneyham & Sharp Fuel Coupe (the 554 '33 Ford Coupe) still exists, housed at the Don Garlitts museum I think. It was still racing in the mid to late 90's at US nostalgia meets.... nitro Hemi!

How about all those mad Fuel Altereds?! Nanook, Rat Trap, The Winged Express and the Pure Hell Bantam... those cars and drivers are the stuff legends are made of. A re-created version of The Winged Express still races in the US... wheelspins the whole track for 7's! Oh and let's not forgot Australia's own John 'The Crazyman' Taylor's Fiat Topolino altered from the early 70's nestled in there too!

Another great thing is all those early A/FX and Funny Car racers... they really trace the evolution of what we now know to be a alchohol or nitro Flopper.

The 'Satisfaction' Cortina shown in the Aussie photos at the bottom still exists in it's updated full chassis, blown 429ci Shotgun form... it was at the Nostalgia Nationals last week. One of the best vintage race cars in the country.

and am sure the trend was to move the rear wheels FORWARD = more weight over the rear end
