Do it, and also Google the number if you haven't already (greypages/equivalent to the rescue?).

I'm sorry to hear that mate.. I only ever saw your car once in the metal.. and IMO it's one of the best 9s going around. Hope you get it back.. if not let's hope the guy gets caught.. but that will be a small consolation.

When i was talking to the bank 8 months ag when i was selling my car they said that bank cheques are no longer a guarantee and take 3 days to clear so i told the bloke he couldnt take the car until fund had cleared. Its a shame it isn't common knowledge.

I hope they catch the fucker.

hopefully ongoing police investigation doesn't drag out the option of insurance payout.

fuck getting the car back after it's most likely been mollested/thrashed/dismantled.

all the best with it mate, sorry to hear about the entire ordeal.

These days it's pretty easy to get a phone number, I'm sure any semi-pro con artist knows the ropes.

What's the deal with insurance? Does it fall into the category of "not stolen" because you gave him the keys?

wouldn't think they could claim it to be 'not stolen' if there is an ongoing Police investigation and they have listed the vehicle as stolen. Then again it is insurance cunts, might claim an 'act of god/budda/alla' instead.

    This sucks.

I guess the only way to be sure is to go to the bank with the person and watch them order and pay for the bank cheque while you witness it.

thats fucked george, hope insurance is good to you (though that doesnt change the fact the car is gone which would piss you off)

The fact that its a counterfeit cheque is worrying, have they actually worked out how to reproduce authentic-looking bank cheques?

i dont understand how no one has caught him yet considering how blatant he is

    This is fucked man...

How long did it take to know it was a dodgy check? Like when you were in the bank? or like during the waiting period?

i wonder what he is doing with them too

i banked the cheque monday lunch and requested special clearance
teller entered it all in no problems
    so it fooled her too

i kept checking my netbank seeing if its cleared and on tuesday about 530 it just said
'cheque dishonoured - counterfeit' and thats when i had my heart attack

i abused the shit out of hsbc for not calling me right away to tell me the cheque was fake and instead let me find out on my netbank

    insurance is investigating

from what ive been told, this guy has done the same thing over and over and over again

i dont see why they dont send out a mass email on carsales warning people of this scam

i saw a carsales billboard tonight driving home
    it said

    'real people. real results'

    yeah. fucking. right.

Sorry to hear... heartbreaking! And at the very least unecessarily stressful if you get the insurance.

Would it be worth contacting other Evo owners nearby who have cars for sale on Carsales too, to see if they had calls from that number, or dealings with that guy? Might uncover some extra info that the cops won't bother looking for.

You could message any seller of potential cars with a standard message, asking for info/warning of this guy. There's a good chance he's contacted others on Carsales. Ideally Carsales would send an email out to sellers, but they won't want to 'harm their brand'...

A quick search - looks like you can - 'You can verify bank cheques with the issuing bank. If you can't verify it with a phone call to the bank, do not accept the cheque.'

Guess the phone route isn't even safe - cleared funds or nothing.

Bank workers are not really trained to spot fakes.

Well I never have been anyway.

You need a special printer and toner cartridge to print cheques, ( micra toner ) there are company's that specialise in cheque printing for banks, I doubt there security is water tight ether.

I'm not a detective, but the idea of having an organized crime group "steal" the car in a manner such as they did and then ship it O/S seems like the wrong way to do things. Because, if he's caught, anyone and everyone that ever "sold" a car to him is going to be able to identify the fucker. So, if I was El Capo de Tutti Capo, I would simply steal the cars in the middle of the night if it was part of an organized crime operation. That way, if you get pegged, you're only caught for stealing one car.

The cunt must have brass fucking balls, though

they aint investigating shit dude, your best chance is call a bunch of other evo owners in your area who are on car sales and tell em what happened, and tell them to call you if they same bloke shows up there, and then tell the cops when the guys mid-sting on the next guy

id like to say the cops are out there invesigating, but really they dont do shit dude, they just file the report and wait till they get lucky and they guy makes a mistake, even then unless they find your car, witch becomes less and less of a chance as time gos on, they wont even tell you when they caught the guy

i hate to come across like a cunt, to be honest i really feel for you, you must be just gutted i couldnt imagine a worse feeling with the amount of time, love and money you odviously put into that car

What is the insurance payout going to be?
Are they going to play ball or are they waiting for the police to finish their investigation....

Hopefully with all the heartache this has caused you the insurance money will actually be a profit on what you were selling the car for.. I know my insurance payout figure has always been higher than what I could have sold the car privately for .........

........ although I have never owned an EVO 9 either, so it may be different there with late model expensive cars.

I guess if the insurance pays out, you were already selling the car so hopefully it all works out for you mate. It may just stuff your premiums up for a bit.
+1 for the guy who said at least it wasn't done with baseball bats etc

the lebos have been stealing wrx's evos gtrs anything hot and shipping them to lebanon for years, they realy have balls of steal, they will take them any way they can, from turning up with 8 of there mates with guns to car yards and driving them off, to towing them away in the middle of the night, to holding up cunts driving down the freeway at gunpoint... basicly whatever they can think of at the time, problem is now no one trusts lebos, so they need a true blue aussie stooge to pull a scam like this one
