There has been a little bit of interest in my build so I thought I'd make a thread about it. Like most of us and our projects, it's been a long time coming and is still a few months away from getting back on the track.
I started back in 2006 with a 1989 Porsche 944 turbo. My intention was to spend a few grand and just do some club racing. I was very naive in thinking I could just slap on a different set of wheels / tyres and I'd be ready. As those of you who have tried your cars on the track will know, you soon find out that street cars have their limitations once out on the racetrack. Even Porsches. You realise that you do need a second set of wheels with R spec tyres. Your brakes need upgrading and modifying, suspension needs attention. The motor needs some basic tlc just to get it up to standard spec and it doesn't take long to get the modifying bug. Especially with turbocharged cars. Anyway I went through a lot of money modifying and screwing up. 2 engine rebuilds that failed had me following a different builder and after another 2 failures the motor is in the US getting the final engine dyno tune and then being shipped down here to go in the current car. That's a very long story made very short!
During this time the car kinda got switched to an earlier model due to a little 'Lara' which eventuated with the car getting written off. Bit sad as this was a really nice looking and feeling car. The new one which I got pretty cheap off Ebay has never had the same solid feeling but now that it is all stripped and caged and essentially a track car, it doesn't matter.
So basically the sequence of pics will show the first car as I bought it. Flew to Adelaide with a bank cheque on a Saturday morning. Took a look around the car for a few minutes. Handed them the money. Drove home to Sydney. Fairly decent test drive I would say. Car hummed along and hit speeds easily up to 240kmh at 3am on a wide 4 lane bit of new bitumen. Way back when they were first released in 1986 these cars could do over 160mph. Outstanding for a 2.5L 4 banger back then.
Then there is a pic of the Grey car with a few mods. Still looking very nice.
We got it to look pretty racecar for a short while but then the accident happened. So we took about 98% of the components out of the Grey car and put them into the Black car. This is a lot harder than it sounds.
So the Black car became the focus and still remains so. It's gone from a street car to a street / trackday car and now it's morphing pretty much into a track / time attack car with number plates. It will only get driven to and from workshops and the track so hopefully we don't get pinged anywhere. Bit tricky to pass the drivers license out of the sliding perspex window around the cage. Don't think the cops like that much.
So the car will probably be in the 1200kg region and we are hoping to have about 450kw at the wheels. A bit of a delay while the dry sump setup was being fitted. We've taken out the old roof with a sunroof and put in a non sunroof version. A lot more headroom for cage and helmet plus lowering the weight and C.o.G. All the stock brake system is coming out and in has gone a Tilton pedal box. Carbon doors are being made up in some far off place and hopefully on their way. New Moton Clubsport suspension is on it's way. The widebody wheel arches are on their way. Got a 6 speed gearbox being built up to take a bit more load. The stock ones are 5 speed and not super strong. New wider wheels on their way too. Aiming to run 305 fronts and 320 rears in slicks.
The car so far has been running on an internally unmodified 2.5L single cam 8v motor (it does have a GT3076 in place of it's older kkk k26/8 and some more up to date electronics plus Plazmaman front mount and larger exhaust. So far the best times on track have been 1.05 at Wakefield Park and 1.45 at Eastern Creek all on R spec. We are expecting a marked improvement with the 3.1L racemotor and all the rest of the changes. These cars are very underrated both by people within and outside of the Porsche community. I have left out a stack of photos, videos, and general info as I don't want to bore you all to death straight up.
The car will come out looking pretty similar to the Black and Orange one shown here, but in all Black.
Apologies if this is the wrong section to post or wrong forum.
ps, what's the difference between a Porsche and a Porcupine? A Porcupine has the pricks on the outside!!
