    But silly money over here.

    Will finish this project first.
Pretty bloody easy to fit an LS1 in one of them, given there is a lot more room in the 'bay than in an E30. You shouldn't need to fuck around with the sump or the stupidly placed brake booster*, but the headers will be tighter than a nun's nasty around the steering box/link. You could swap to an E30 rack/pinion set-up and there's a lot of info out there in BMW Land on this.

The rear-end will easily take a decent whack of power, but i'd grab some of the off-the-shelf weld-in reinforcements to make sure of it. Trans tunnel will swallow a T56 like Jenna Jameson swallows cocks.

*80s BMW brake boosters shows you how they lost 2 world wars in 30 years.

Brake booster on a Rover P6 is mounted behind the drivers side headlight.

    BMW weren't the only ones...

Had a bit of a mixed day.

Good progress on the car, finished off a lot of little jobs, wiring for tacho + speedo converters, fans + relays, adjusted shifter, filled + burped water, power steering, auto.

Now starts and runs great, can move under it's own steam. Was just getting ready for the tow truck to the exhaust shop - then bugger noticed oil dripping from the sump.

Hoiked it up to have a look - and theres an inch long crack in the sump starting from a corner where I got a piece of angle ally welded in, with oil now slowly dripping out of it. Haven't got a photo yet.

The sump has been fine (not leaking) till I took it off last weekend to muck around with the oil pickup. It wasn't a battle to get it out, I correctly re-torqued most of the bolts up with a torque wrench but couldn't access the front four so did them close to by feel. Haven't hit anything with it - it's only been a few yards forward and back in the yard. Maybe taking out the bit for rack clearance was too much now it's been through a heat cycle?

Anyway fuck it - still needs an exhaust, so off on the tow truck it went.

Plan is cats / 2.5" twin system with muffler and resonator each side, and an H-pipe.

Here's a pic of it in the bay, and off to the exhaust place. Yes the PCM is held in with zip ties. And there's some old jocks plugging the A/C pipes. Intake is standard commodore cut down, rad / fans standard VX. Engine sits low, looks great.

Drove it round the block and onto the truck, all seemed well, was a giggle. Neighbours greatly amused.

looking good man! good progress, engine bay looks nice now

bummer about the sump - wtf? maybe ask the exhaust guy if he can just tig some more material onto it while it's on the hoist to cover the crack? just make sure the bastard doesn't drop ALL the oil while it's away and run dry!

Yeah, it did look a bit high when I first took it off the stands, but the suspension has settled looks ok now. I'll recheck it when I get it back.

Just got a length of vaccum pipe from Repco, which is currently joined to the Holden one with a biro tube and jubilee clips.

Amazing how the English disease has infected that American motor so quickly. Take the Jag engine out of the Jag, and it'll still find a way of dropping oil.

It's the jag auto-rust protection system. Patented!

So how am I going to stop it leaking?
Can I weld it on the car? I really can't be fucked dropping the rack again this weekend.
Anything I can glue / epoxy it with to patch it temporarily?

Just got home from the zorst shop, mostly good trip.

Thanks Stocky for being wingman in case of calamity, but nothing fell off!

Twin 2.5" system with cats, straight through mufflers + resonators.
Sounds great, not too loud either.

LHS near the manifold does clonk on the chassis rail idling in Drive, needs a bit of fiddling with. Might be able to adjust the engine mounts, shims + washers etc.

Fans are on pretty much the whole time, temp not over 65C, must be my wiring.

Got some O2 sensors in the mail, need to lengthen the loom both sides.

Idles a bit shit after a run, but at the moment no O2 sensors and the PNRD switch on the selector shaft isn't mounted so the ECU thinks it's in Park the whole time. Hopefully fixing those will smooth that out.

Up on stands again soon to fiddle with the mounts, take some pics.

the fan thing is a tune thing, that you can set. my fans are on a lot, especially in slow traffic.

can get loom extensions on ebay.

    Update on the shitbox.

There's a few teething issues that are becoming annoying now.

Fans are on as soon as it fires from cold. I've checked and rechecked the wiring, at the moment I just have the "high speed fans on" output from the ECU wired up, so perhaps that's throwing it out? In the donor, the "low speed fans on" signal comes via the serial data link via the PIM to the BCM. I have a BCM simulator ready to put in which I hope will give me back "low speed fan" output, also a "check engine" light, and puts the A/C clutch signal into the ECU too.

The car is running like arse at the mo, feels like its missing on a few cylinders. Also it starts and drives in 3rd, will manually drop down to 2nd, the shift selector lever works perfectly for park, reverse, neutral, so I'm pretty sure I'm selecting drive ok.
Wondering if I've startled it into limp home mode or something? I did drive it back with no O2 sensors, probably threw a gazillion fault codes.

If it's in limp home how can I fix it? Tried unplugging the battery overnight no joy.

    Any other thoughts?

    Fookin thermostat's fooked too.

It seemed as though the thermostat was broken or stuck open, as the rad was warming up straight from cold, so I pulled open the thermostat cover and no thermostat fitted at all.

It's a one piece thermostat housing and cover on the VU and it looks like the old thermostat hasbeen snapped off, there's a couple of areas of bare alloy where it was mounted.

So I got another one, to fit a VU which is where I think the engine's from, but it won't fit into the water pump. WTF? The mount lugs are way to too wide, couple of mm each side.

So wondering if I've got a different water pump maybe from a later LS1 and the previous owner has had to hack up the thermostat housingto get it to fit? Hoping to try a few different water pumps at Bursons tomorrow!

Also is there a limp home mode on these? That would fit with what I'm seeing.
    -runs like arse
    -fans on the whole time
    -gearbox in 3rd
    -in open loop fuelling.
If not in limp home then there's lots of things suddenly fucked up at the same time.

I have a cheap ebay scanner which reads the sensors but it doesn't give me fault codes so bit in the dark.

Any help from LS1 guru's appreciated thanks

Yeah i'd say it's in limp home mode.

Do a PCM reset and sees if it clears it.

    So I am a doofus.

Can't seem to reset the PCM.

Tried leaving the battery disconnected overnight.
Tried taking out the PCM fuse for a while, turning on the ignition for a minute, then off, then replacing the fuse.

Got the BCM simulator plugged in now.
This indicates that the low speed fan is set to on also, as is the "check engine" light no surprises there!

I haven't got any commodore instruments, so various net references to listening out for a chime to reset the PCM don't apply.

How else can I reset it?

    Progress report - engines fucked.

Went and got the codes read - nothing from the engine, but still running like arse, misfiring more.

Lots of codes from the gearbox, all of them I think! Hopefully it's just come unplugged which would explain the box being in fail safe mode. Haven't got the stands currently will check over the weekend, and my ghetto wiring.

Chased the misfire - isolated to no.2.
    Injectors are all ok.
Plug was oily - oh bugger. Rest all fine.
Comp test - most around 150-160psi, no. 2 on 30 wet + dry.

    Valve? Gasket?

Also I still can't explain why the fans come on straightaway. That's a potential fail safe mode if the temp sensor breaks, but I'm getting accurate readings from that so more mystery there too.
