    nice welds in here...

I should take some photos of the work the CASA welder bloke does at work..

Always wanted to try my hand at welding, among the list of other things I wish I could do in a home workshop! Need to make custom cooler piping/cooler to fit the active front spoiler/FMIC combo in the supra.

I had to weld some castors onto a steel tube to go onto the bottom of a work table.
I haven't touched the TIG for a while, was happy with the result.

Thanks bud! I got to see one of your plenums up close recently, Very tidy indeed.

I use to do a fair bit of ally welding years ago. I welded some off cuts together on the weekend to make sure i could still do it as i have to build a custom inlet manifold soon and dont want to mess it up. I got a mate who tig welds aluminium for a living and considered just getting him to do it but then i wouldnt get the satisfaction of completing it myself.

Do you do any prep work to weld the cast? I have struggled in the past welding to cast with porosity.

Cheers. Post up some pics of the manifold when its done...it's always interesting to see what people do.

As for the prep work, nothing really, just clean it well and away you go. Might also clean the inside if its possible, but I don't and they still turn out pretty well.

Engine bolt ons like manifolds which are cast are easy to weld, its just engine casings which can be the killer because of the massive amount of oil they retain.

Ah that's good to know. I guess most of the cast parts i have tried to weld have been sumps and cast radiator pipes.

I got some more manifold pics but not of the typical Jz or Rb motor.

I have some updates on the 1j manifold. I got another set of manifolds completed and then went to work on the 1j manifolds and then ran out of oxygen so I could not massage the pipe to suit the ports so I will have to complete that when I have another gas bottle.
I am still not sure how I am going to run the wastegate/s. The design is a copy of the full race manifolds and they run two gates, one off each collector but I am leaning towards running two gates of the turbine housing. I will have to wait to see how much room i have available before i make a decision.

Impressive work guys. I'm assuming the skills have been built up by working in the welding/fab area?

Being able to TIG is up there on my must do list at some stage. Nothing more fullfilling then creating something from scratch yourself.

Are you doing a root pass and then a filler pass on that steam pipe? What filler?

For pipe, I usually do a single pass on single beveled joins (pipe - Elbow) and root run and capping run on single V (Elbow- Elbow).
As for filler rod i have used er308L and er309L (stainless filler) primarily because i find it gets less porisity and is easier to weld with. I have had no strength or cracking problems under usual conditions to date.

I have had a manifold, which i used 308 filler rod, on a car that was envolved in a collision with a pole or tree that inpacted the turbo and wastegate. It pushed the runners closer to the motor and cracked 2cm of weld where the wastegate pipe was welded to the collector. Considering the state of the car i thought the strength of the manifold was quite impressive.

unitig 315 thingy with foot pedel and water cooled torch etc..

only a cheap shitter but it will only be used for thicker stuff as the little 220 amp kemppi is still the gun machine for the thinner stuff..

Dale, you just have to stop feeding the rod from the side of the puddle

And my kemppi can do 10mm easily, single phase 230amps. I have seen you mention helium, its the way to go

So now I am back into it....and playing around with all the settings to get a result I am happy with. Here are some pics but the machine still needs some adjustments.....

Ariel they look nice! I wish I had more time welding, unfortunately its limited to late nights and weekends at this stage but not many aluminium jobs.

The only recent aluminium job I have pics handy. I designed it on the computer, ran a FEA analysis on it for 20psi and then got all the bits laser cut and folded. Underestimated the shrinkage in the weld which caused massive cracking problems and so had to redesign the lower part to what it is now. I keep telling myself that if I did it every day I would improve but don't think I will ever find out.

i culd get some pics of mine, but they are far from 'mad'.. just this week i was practising vertical ups and my boss called them 'a bunch of grapes'.. fucking cunt! (amps were right, but too much wire feed, so weld built up too much in the centre of weld)

PLAYA: The original lower profile was flat between the ports. The welds in the inside around the ports were only a few mm from this horizontal part. when the welds cooled it pulled this horizontal in tension and there was nowhere to relieve the stress so it would crack the welds closest to the horizontal part. I changed it to have the V shape so that when the welds cooled it can try straighten out this new fold and relieve the stress. It will probably weld a small amount with flow.

ET!: I dont weld very much with MIG at all let alone in those positions. Below is the only pic i have that I'm proud of. I welded a few ripper thine holders onto the leg for my old mans earthmoving rig.
