Ken Warby - Balls of Steel

I know this is a car forum and all - but I'd just like to bring the attention of those too young to remember this (like me)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Warby

Cliffs: has held the world water speed record for over 30 years - the two official attempts since have resulted in death - in a boat he built in his back yard, with an air-force surplus jet engine - over 500km/h.

    How dangerous is this?

the guy that broke the record more than anyone else:

    last guy to try -

    Ken Warby - Respect!

I remember this from being on tv. He used to trailer it around the country to shopping centres, shows, etc. It was not high art.

It was also far from stable. But.... flat out, didn't it look awesome! And the terminal trap speed of 345mph = 550kph, is...like...wow.

mum and dad were there foir this.

IIRC dad did some of the legal work preceding the attempt.

I also recall mum saying they were up at 3 am a couple of times to see it run, but was cancelled due to weather the 1st 2 times.

    balls of steel no doubt.

Warby was planning to go for another attempt at the record a few years ago, apparently he had funding and everything, Not sure what happened though, everything went quiet

The original boat was on display at the Maritime Museum in Sydney (not sure if it still is). Up close, she's a bit rough and honestly, the bloke pretty much just built it based on some other power boats he'd been involved with. No computer modelling buffoonery, just a bloke with a good eye. If it looks right, it is right.
I have a deep admiration for him and I don't blame him not wanting to have another crack. No need actually.

There was a program on Discovery Channel a few years ago that included Warby's record run. It also showed that between runs he thought the rudder was creating too much drag so he got out the oxy and carved a chunk off it. Looking at the wobble at speed I think the pucker factor would have been well up there on the scale.

That probably accounted for half the downforce...

wow, had no idea. cheers, restecp indeed, especially considering he obviously had a good combination luck, eye and coconut nards on his side to manage that.

restecp also to the guys that bested it and for Ken to decide an extra couple years on the planet was a better idea than an extra couple k's!

I forgot all about him making another attempt. Fair call on waiting for someone to break his record though. Going fast on water is sketchy as fuck

I used to work with a bloke who's grand father had a jet powered hydro, he showed me a few pics of the boat and how his pop drove it, crazy old bloke knelt in front of the engine, i cant remember the name of the boat but i think i may have posted pics on PF before

later years he built a jet truck called puff the magic draga which ended up killing him

Ok his name was tom watts and the boat was called exciter

No one has bettered his record - still stands - probably will for another 30 years.

I like how none of them ever has earmuffs on and nobody is quite sure how to tell him the inside of the boat is on fire when he is running it in the driveway.

The test location looks fucking sketchy as too.. Fuck they wing it.

Saw it & Ken up close many years ago at Westfield Parramatta where I worked at the time.
Had a few yarns with him. Typical knock about bloke but had the nouse.
I remember the rudder was about 25mm flat plate with a square edge & when I asked him why, he said that if it had a rounded or pointed edge, it would be more susceptable to damage from debris and that with the power available, any drag was insignificant.

Has held the record 3 times longer than anyone else in the history.

muz: well if HSE was involved at all, no one would be breaking any records :P

Great thread, thanks for posting. He certainly was a little mental. It's takes a special kind of person to be able to design something knowing that it's a long shot, strap themselves in and go for it knowing that there is a significant chance of meeting the maker. And all before the glory of winning the internets. Farken awesome.

Picked me up a copy of his biography.

    so expect a few tidbits.

    1. He is the only person alive to have held the water speed record.

Odd question though - anyone have any idea how i could get my book autographed? i have never had the urge to do so - so as he's not on some sort of publicity tour etc, anyone know how i could go about it?

He has tested the boat a few times in Taree. I believe he has some financial backing from a couple of blokes in town. Last time it was tested it looked the goods. ( this was about 2 years ago, gone quiet recently )
    Now without LS1........again!

Not surprising as I think something like 50% of the people that tried it died doing so.
Balls of steel is totally correct!
