turbo is ready to bolt on but won't happen until the engine is back in the car, which won't happen until i have locked the diff.

finally finished all weight reductions. lesson learnt: start with a light car and save several hundred hours labour.

i think i got my race weight down by another 50kg, which was the aim.

ready for diff locking this weekend. never done it before and going to try and get away with using the TIG welder.

well, didn't get around to welding the diff last weekend. it is out and degreased though. factory workshop manuals made gearbox disassembly easy.

the machining is spherical inside the diff carrier and hence all side & spider gears have 'spherical' machining on their backsides... weird.

nevertheless, with a long weekend coming up it will all be back together and running. can't wait to be driving this again.

All the teeth still there? I pulled mine to do an lsd and there was already a few fragments of teeth floating around the case.

Was all in good condition. Tiny metal shavings around the magnet but nothing out of the ordinary.

Sounds like you got the LSD installed just in time. What type of LSD out of curiosity?

    .

Didn't really get any photos of mods this time around. Found these on my phone:

    seat mounting bracket

    front and rear bumper supports

    weight reduced door hinges

    weight reduced door latches

thought i'd take this around the block once to try out the new locked front diff (plus no power streering).

what a thoroughly unenjoyable experience. i never thought i'd be afraid of a sub 300hp car.

come on to boost and it changes lanes on you (without your consent!). take a slow sharp corner and it overwhelms the hoon hotline.

for once i'm not looking forward to taking this thing to the track.

Me too. Commotion, which engine /mods was he running, I always wanted a mira with a 'big block' CB80/90. It would have stopped 200kgs off the charade I reckon, something like 450kgs

    Sorry for thread hj

It had a stock 1L sirion motor, td05g turbo running 22psi, 38mm tial gate venting atmo, 2.5" stainless exhaust, custom sheet metal plenum c/w ca18 tb, xr6 turbo intercooler, wolf v4 ecu running e85. It went okay for what it was but didn't have enough load on motor in 1st & 2nd to spool up turbo and so was a bit docile until 3rd & 4th.

not awesome! headed to the drags. bolted the 245 drag radials on and it was almost unsteerable. after only three runs I pulled something in my chest from having to put incredible effort into low-speed steering the car around the place. had to call it a night.

the one OK run I did get was a 13.6 at about 16psi and the steering wheel didn't fight too much. the run after that was at 20psi and I couldn't keep it in my lane (not cool).

won't be going back to the track again with that setup. options are to install power steering (intercooler pipework and dump pipe in the way so a lot of rework) or install another open diff (if I can find one... the gearboxes are rare as hell).

    lessons learnt:
    * fwd locked diff with power steering would may be ok
    * fwd open diff without power steering is ok
    * fwd locked diff without power steering is fucking madness

run same setup, but move it to the startline with gojacks, and use some kind of boost per gear/two stage boost controller to ideally keep it in your lane?

that could work. would need a pit crew though, which would be lol for a 13sec car.

it's $900 for a torsen LSD. if I could justify using the gearbox for a future project i'd seriously consider it but I can't.

Do these have equal length driveshafts? (like with a layshaft and bearing bracket)

Yeah, equal length driveshafts (between CV centers), with what the manual calls a 'joint shaft' (with bearing bracket) between driver side driveshaft and diff.

Something else that may not be helping with torque steer is going from standard rim +42mm offset to drag radial rim +5mm offset.

I don't think P/S will help much. I welded the front diff on my pajero and its fucking hopeless to steer, and torque steers with a whole 107kw! I can unlock a hub to fix it though

well a plan of attack has formed:
step 1 - manual rack (in lieu of power steering due to cost)
step 2 - two stage boost control (e.g. 16psi switched to 24psi straight after the 1st to 2nd gear change)
step 3 - increase rim positive offset to decrease scrub radius

so basically the locked diff stays because of the noticeably extra traction it gives and I just try and manage the torque steer I get on 1st to 2nd (and to a lesser extent 2nd to 3rd) gear change
