Kustom Nats 2013 - the other Nats at Phillip island

went to the kustom nats at phillip island this weekend with son.

saturday night was show at Cowes (main town in PI)

sat /sunday was show at the track.

the show is for pre 66 cars - unless you have aletr one its by application only .
didnt stop the sunday show fromhaving a smattering of XY's XA's, HT/HT holdens , HQ's etc...

went down in this :1961 xk ute (less dog)

had to do a bit of negotion with son : had to fit seat belts to convince him to come in the ute ...kids these days ...

this is from brght rod run - son took no photos of ute at kustom nats..

cowes on sat night - was packed as also some hippy night markets : block off the main street for the cars

lowered benz - look at camber of back wheels - swing axle for the win

    interesting gear stick:

    always one tool :

and so had a bit of a problem on sat : just had parked yhe ute at cowes - went back at 11pm to move it , started it and bam - backfiring thru the carb .- but sounded like a knock.

    hmmm
so opened bonnet and looked about, got some help from two pissed dudes - thanks boys...

and then pulled off no 3 spark lead - knock /backfiring stopped - but still running on 5 cyl .
so drove off and resolved to look at in morning at the track

so at about 60kmh drove to the track , let it cool, and whipped rocker cover off - had lots of onlookers now ..

yep had slipped a pushrod off the exhaust rocker.

can see it next to the socket :

whipped off the rockers shaft and reset the pushrod and away we went .

many hands make light work :

figured out the back firing /knock was the exhaust cracking back out the inlet valve - as exhaust valve wasnt opening, then sucking in the air charge and same cycle - pulling the plug lead off just stopped it firing:

Looks like a fun day. It saddens me though, you can't do that shit with Commodore owners. They would all be trying to drift turn one at 240km/h and then stopping on the infield to take their clothes off and flex...

It is probably a better event than summernats and I've driven there from Canberra in the ute and in the Caddy before so you should suck it up and head down next year

Not that it matters, just curious.

Few hundred cars. Not sure exactly. Usually the whole concrete pit area at PI is full of cars and they spill down into the grass at the bottom of the pits. It's nothing like lebnats for action but it's a cool relaxed vibe and bitches don't get punched in the head

i got into circuit at 9.30am sunday

i was ticket number 400- so guess over the 2 days will get 600 entrants.

mrs jones - lol thats waht had me confused as i wasnt thrashing it - as i said just started it up . reckon the valve must of stuck down and push rod fell off the rocker tappet

best thing is you can usualy fix these with a 7/16", 1/2" and 9/16" socket , a lump of wood and some cable ties....

    ozrodders forum.

besides the bitching (rodders are still great at sooking despite having the most relaxed modification laws of any "subgroup" in the country) its a pretty cool place to check out builds and upcoming events.

    Nice photos man.

Wouldn't have thought that Merc was pre 66 either with the 3.5L (can't back that up with any knowledge). How's a P plater drive a v8 down there?

Looks like it'd be an interesting show to go to.

Oh yeah, forgot to say, love those old Falcons for some reason.

I recall reading somewhere 2 door post sedans like this were the most common of early Falcons in the US. Since they were the cheapest.

I just noticed - the import 'coon has the funky sun-visor with the bulge that matches the XK-XM bonnet bulge.
