Nissan IDx - new Datsun 510/Silvia- GT86 killer confirmed

NISSAN has confirmed that the Tokyo motor show-starring IDx Concept will find its way to production sometime within the next two years.

Speaking to GoAuto at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, Nissan Motor Company executive vice president Andy Palmer said the rear-wheel drive 2+2 seater coupe would slot in well below the current 370Z sports car in terms of pricing, positioning and size.

However, he stopped short of revealing which drivetrain choices would be offered on the production version, while the name of the coupe remains a mystery.

“I’d sit in somewhere … where 200SX/Silvia used to sit.”

WTF? They're making two identical models now?

Except this one is a GT86 competitor, whereas the one which looks identical in the other thread has a Tiida engine or some-such shit?

Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

It' different, but GT86 killer it is not. It could/might end up having more power and drive better but people will still flock to the prettier, shinier thing.

Looks like it has more in common with the 510 than the 86 does with an AE86.....but thats probably not a good thing.

the styling precludes it from ever getting near 86 sales numbers

I think they mean performance killer, not sales killer.

I'm guessing that means they'll stick a detuned/destroked VQ37 in it and call in a FairbabyZ.

I'm sick - I like the way it looks more than I like the new 86 - the Nismo version that is.

"Nissan is currently proposing a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine. That powerplant could easily rival the 200 hp of the Toyota and Subaru duo. It could then be fitted with a seamless and sporty CVT complete with a 6-speed manual shift mode and synchronised rev control for the driving enthusiasts out there."

Your disease is worse than you think, I like the styling more than the 86 too.
If it's more Polo than Golf sized, it might have a useful niche; but it's hard to imagine them achieving that for less than AU$30k.

Didnt the article mention "medium" term model? Therefore they probably don't have a platform to build it off... looking at 4-5yrs away. By then the desire for coupes etc will have died again.

Get rid of a couple of car show styling things and I think it looks no worse than the current 1 series coupe. The GT86s isn't exactly pretty in standard form either.

This. I'm quite surprised at the dislike to this thing. I rate it. Possibly a little too retro styled, but looks cool.

I see a few mentions that it may get a manual which is a concerning comment.

You would think manual would bea certainty.

This abortion is purely for Nth American 510 hipsters to shout about it on social media. The production version will be toned down to the point where hipsters stop social media-ing and people with money start making pre-orders...

imagine crossing the road in front of some 18 year old cap backwards fucktard driving that thing - would hurt like hell.

that front end needs fixing, if not for safety at least to make it resemble something people would actually want. The rest looks pretty cool actually, so long as it has enough guts and handling to keep the punters interested.

Looks 'boxy'. Cant see the side exhaust passing Australia rego but I guess it's just a concept car not production and things like this will be changed.
