I'll probably be doing a ride or two in July with a workmate up at glasshouse. He's never been before, so won't be a flat out affair, but I can post up here when we're heading out if others are keen. Would probably be mid-week though as we both do FIFO.

was a great bike, but you are right, snappy as all shit, if it was the tiniest bit slippery/dusty it was plain sketchy.
Nothing sounded better than that bike on the pipe going up the hill

this was a much better bike, 2011 YZ250 with 280 kit, headwork and a flywheel weight. Perfect bike.

for reference, that's matt moss passing me at 5.00 like I'm standing still lol.

I'm keen, I'm a jobless bum so I'd take up a mid week ride offer any day at the moment lol.

I'm going out for a ride this Sunday at the beer (if the weather is good) Probably arrive at around 8-830 and start the ride at 8:45am. I'm taking an ex workmate out for a ride (he's just got into dirtbiking) so it will be pretty easy going, but flowy tracks will be provided. If anyone is interested let me know, will be an easy 60-80km ride with stops as often as anyone needs them.

ls400x - that sounds like a sweet offer, is there any decent camping up that way?

Nice riding brasher, very sensible at the start and started to loosen up towards the end and throw in a few whips. I'm keen to get on an mx track however my wr450 is a tad heavy for those kind of duties, and my suspension is setup for trail riding rather than mx.

I was toying with the idea of a yz250, but I just couldn't find a place to put it at home.

Was this the one that was on EBay in Melbourne? If you get sick of it or it that complete pile of shit, sing out as id potentially be interested in it. No worries if you’re keeping it. I’m always on the lookout for vinduro bikes and love Suzuki's so it’s worth an ask

Alright so my missus has put her stiletto firmly into my nutsack on the motard idea, apparently 2 bikes, a jetski, a ute and a racecar is too many toys

I still want a motard though so im considering selling my YZ and getting a WR450 with a set of dirt wheels and motard wheels.

How different is the WR going to be on dirt compared to the YZ? Obviously its going to have more balls so I will need to treat it with a bit more respect but is it like riding a lounge chair in comparison?

If its going to be shit on dirt I might have to explore other options...like a divorce

I found riding the moto cross cousin like the wr underwhelming was struggling trying too make them turn or change lines especially mid corner.
(I'm saying that as most of my riding in the bush has been on a moto crosser)
The extra weight and lack of power will make you ride the bike a bit different but not really much slower.

Power is easy to sort. The weight issue is a different story...

Also found the suspension needed work but think a spring change and re valve would sort that.

You'll only ever be compromising one for the other. I've riden a WR450 once and wasn't impressed at all but thats just my opinion.

I got my husky 450 about as close to an MX bike as you could and it was still bringing a butter knife to a gun fight compared to a dedicated MX'er, the engine was near perfect for both, just a bit too top heavy. A new 350EXC-F or 300EXC would be a better compromise though and I reckon in the right hands would win clubman MX round no worries.

Got back on the track after 2 months off, rusty as all fuck but it all comes back a few laps in. Riding fitness up shit creek lol. Reminded me how much fun it is when you got a few of the boys block passing and having battles on the track.

So a 300EXC would be my best option for both worlds?

Im aware there will be a compromise on dirt with a road reg bike, its just a matter of how much of a compromise it will be i suppose.

Whats wrong with 2 strokes? They aren't all mythical fire breathing beasts with lightswitch powerbands that'll buck you to the moon. Most of the newer KTM and husqvarna's are quite rideable. Try get a ride on some mates bikes that are different to try guage what you like.

Brasher - You wear your chest plate under the jersey or none at all? I actually hit the track again a fortnight ago and had a blast, arm pump like crazy though.

I done a quick top end rebuild after the track day and cleaned the old girl up while reassembling.

    300exc = 11ty win!

I owned one for 3 years and put nearly 200 hours on it.

No good on the road though.

No chest plate. The neck brace has saved me from life in a wheelchair without question. Will never ride without one now.

350exc pretty much the perfect bike if you gonna ride both trail and mx. The old ones were a bit gutless but the 14's are good with a pipe. Enough grunt to take inside line and clear obstacles.

I've got an 09 WR450 and I think it'll be the perfect bike for dirt and motard duties. However my definition of dirt is more geared to enduro riding and gnarly hills as well as hitting a nice set of whoops and berms. I've always wanted to get on an MX track but don't know how my WR would go, I've got the suspension re-valved and the spring rates changed for more heavy duty stuff and I've taken out as much weight as possible for it so I reckon it might be pretty good.

From what I've been told the WR motor and YZ motor are fairly similar, however the WR has more low rpm grunt as opposed to the YZ that has more top end sting, which suites me perfectly tractoring up hills and shit.

Like I said before power wise is fairly easy to upgrade.

    I had a crf450 05 it went fairly well.

I ended putting a stage 1(bottom and mid range boost) hotcam and 13.5 piston along with pro circuit full exhaust.

Also put a steel case clutch basket in for a little weight on the flywheel.

I ended up with 14 46 gearing that thing was a cruise missile.

On the start line at moto cross not much could get near it would pretty much level peg a 2 banger 500 cc bike.

Had so much bottom end grunt I could leave it in 3rd gear were as before with stock cam and piston. You would have to down shift to get it to pull with the cam it would happily lug at least 2 gears higher even with the taller gearing.

On pony express rides it would run out of brakes fairly quickly.

But luckily it had enough engine breaking to be of some use.

it will have a bit more bottom end but that's it lol.

a modern day 250F with pipe and remap will make about 40hp. They are like a BMX bike with a motor these days. Even the 450's are nimble as all shit, I rode a '14 CRF450 on the weekend and it was barely noticeably heavier than my '11 250F

    4 strokes are fucking gay!

In saying that, 350cc is probably the sweet spot. Gutless down low compared to a 300exc though.
