2012 Renault Megane sport cup 265 croissant eating surrender mobile

So I haven't owned a car in what seems like quite a long time (for me anyway). I had been battling through Winter on the R1 but a moron in a Hyundai has put an end to that. So I figured rather than continuing to enjoy wet, cold rides I would purchase a car. The original plan was a cheap and cheerful Megane 225 sport but things escalated and I ended up with this.

Purchased the car in Melbourne last weekend. It's only done 10,000 kms which is kind of crazy when you consider the original owner has lost $2 in depreciation for every kilometre he drove it. Seems to have had a pretty easy life too, the original tyres are still in really good nick with no noticeable wear difference front to rear. He also hadn't reset the trip computer in over 3000kms and looking at the fuel consumption his right foot wasn't particularly heavy. What's more the car has been serviced by the dealer 3 times in that 10,000 kms!

Drove home via the great ocean road, the handling really is sublime. So much so my girlfriend who is normally a really good passenger was rather angry with me when we arrived at our accommodation in Apollo Bay for the night.

Car isn't without it's French oddities though. For some reason you can't put it in 'sport' mode with cruise control enabled. Also, the cruise control enable switch (just the enable switch, actual controls are on the steering wheel) is on the centre console while sport mode button is on the dash to the right of the steering wheel so it's a two handed operation to switch between cruise control and sport. Why? There are others that I can't remember right now as I only drove the car for the weekend then had to head off for work for 2 weeks on the Monday. Will add them when I'm back home and remember. Oh and my girlfriend snapped the inside door handle thing (the bit you pull to close the door) just by trying to close the door. She weighs about 55kg so it's not like she was exerting a massive amount of force on it... luckily it still has a few months factory warranty left.

Anyway, here are some pics. They're just the Carsales pics as I didn't have time to take any before heading back to work:

Randy De Puniet has had more crashes than any other rider in the history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.

Fucking approved!!! (as long as you get another bike too) Funnest car I owned was my RenaultSport, and love Meganes (although a bit of a fat bum fan).

Just keep it serviced and you'll be laughing and if you own it long enough do the belts etc at the right time to avoid heartache! Good if you can find a french car mechanic local.

Keen on one of these, and very interested to hear ownership experience.

The main rule with sporty Renaults is never buy a brand new one.

My old man may well be looking to swap out of his A250 Sport and in to one of the latest versions of these but am trying to talk him in to a 12mth old version.

These are a good thing as far as bum-draggers go. They respond well to a chip and a pipe too, upwards of 200FWKW is easily had.

Thanks Cam. I'm actually thinking about something a bit cheaper for the next street bike after spending more than I intended on this and the demise of the R1 fresh in my memory. I actually really like the 04/05 ZX10R- the original head shake death machine. Will start having a look around when the weather warms up to see if I can't find a mint low kms example but that's a story for PF Bikes.

Haven't had a look myself but I do hear that there is some kind of Frog mechanic around the traps somewhere in Adelaide. Will have to sort that out as dealer rape is not one of my favourite pastimes...

Have you driven one trem? If not find one at a dealer and pray they let you out on your own, you really do have to have a steer to get a feel for what they're all about. I actually badly wanted the... check this out for longest model name ever: Megane sport cup 265 trophee as it has sweet Recaros but also extremely ugly 19's which I would have swapped for the 18's on the 'regular' cup model. When this one came up at the right price and with only 10,000 kms though it was time to pull the trigger. I paid $26k.

Yeah, was a little surprised and bemused when I heard the loud 'crack' from her just trying to close the door.

Well... it's funny you mention that. I have been looking into getting it tuned however if I'm going to get it tuned, I'd really like it to be for E85. I have two service stations not far from my place which sell the 'ol corn juice and especially with the Renault being turbo charged, there are obviously gains to be had. Nobody seems to be actually tuning them here though. It seems you can use fastchip/RS tuner where you download the logs from your car, email them to Europe and they email you back with a tune to upload. I did speak to a place in Melbourne (MPC) who said they could tune it but when pressed them it sounded like they were just going to use the same fastchip/RS tuner but with the added bonus of paying four times the price... They said they could possibly sort out E85 but it would be the first time it had been done so they'd probably have to revise the tune several times which would take several days due to time differences etc, meaning they'd need the car for a while (massive pain in the arse with them being in Melbourne) and the cost would be considerably more than they already considerable cost they'd quoted for a regular tune. So basically, they can get fucked.

Pfft ignore the gays out there like I did and get one, they're fucking cool and nowhere near as bad as people say (mine had a Hyperpro damper but they have an Ohlins stock, a good damper sorts them nicely) Loved the front end on mine and who the fuck doesn't love 160kmhr plus wheelies.

Not sure what the place is like now but I was a member of OzRenaults and AussieFrogs, might be worth a look for tuna'ness.

Pretty sure Aaron may have found a solution to the tune situation with his GT220.
But yeah, the tune situation for frogs is abit ordinary here. Then there is the issues with Euros encrypting ECUs, I know PSA started doing it around 2012 which means doing anything with my thing is a crap shoot.

Hell yeah. Such an epic car. Mate of mine just bought one of the 275 Trophy models in bright fuck off yellow.

I have the plebeian spec GT Line 1.2T and it handles extremely nicely for a shopping trolly. Last RS I drove was the original one of that shape and even it was plenty rapid.

I'd hazard a guess that the guy you got it from fucked the door handle and poorly tacked it back on and your lady friend has just had the misfortune of discovering it.
Had over 12,000km on our Megane and nothing has fallen off or broken.

You'll get used to the stereo controls behind the steering wheel as well. I hate front mounted ones now.

Quick break everything else hanging off it and have it replaced before the warranty runs out!

Mine was an '02 model with 112'000kms on it and amazingly no plastics were broken despite hearing a number of stories - luck of the draw mixed with how you treat them perhaps. I dare say yours may have been a little wonky before the Mrs touched it (unless she has a strong squirrel grip?)

Have the Trophy 8:08 version sitting in the garage as the nopics daily.

Fucking great fun to drive, Recaro's are nice etc. Day to day it could be a little more softly sprung, but it is still very very easy to live with. Only 1 issue in 50,000km was a sensor in the left hand door not picking up the key when you try open the car from that side, and that same sensor works for the TPS as well.

Needs better pads, and tyres, but otherwise great fun out of the box. Am yet to mod, but a 3 inch from the turbo back, intake and RS tuner tune should really see it liven up. E85 at the moment though, seems like it has been put in the too hard basket.

The door handles get broken because long heavy doors. Renault will replace under warranty unless the previous owner tried glueing it back together (which is common).

One of my customers just replaced his lightly-fettled MK6 Golf GTI with one of these. Raves about it at every opportunity.

OBD port is a cunt to get to. Lives behind the plastic panel at the very front of the centre console, under the heater controls. It has single-use clips on it, so factor in a new cover every time you scan or flash it.

    Sort of.

These things have a few competent Tuners and really only a couple of tuning platforms, the RSTuner (fastchip.nl) or RSTuning (RSTuning.co.uk) are the same hardware, fastchip being the original supplier.

The Fastchip guy (Henk) does do good tunes and has stuff that just works in Australia with minimal risks (his hardware has data logging ability depending on the model you buy and he can/will tailor tunes to suit, but he's also got a lot of data from other owners in AU to refine his product). He is currently working on an update to his process that will remove the real downside to his product which around ECU locking. At the moment he "locks" the ECU to the hardware device the moment you flash a tune and it can no longer be written over (or have the calibration read) except by the specific flash tuner that its locked to. This is great, until you flash the stock map back and sell the car. The 2nd owner gets it with a bricked ECU etc - or Renault goes to flash it with an update as part of a fault finding process, replaces the ECU and then sends you the bill after the faulty one is checked over by head-office. (all of this has happened in Australia in that last couple of years). Henk is working on a update that will "unlock" the ECU when a factory tune is re-applied (so basically it'll only lock when one of his tunes is one it)

Bluefin is not good. Very much "canned tune" with some people loving it and some people having scary AFRs... I get the impression that they will "try" to help out but at the end of the day there's a 50:50 split between happy customers and customers who feel the tunes aren't "safe" on Aussie fuel and summer weather.

Anything that a workshop here uses that is done via eMail/Online is pretty much a crap shoot. They basically do a combo of "run car on dyno", "email VIN and ECU key data back to base", "get back a tune file where boost is fiddled", "run on dyno". If AFR isn't terrible they hand it back to the customer. You're probably going to pay more and get less than buying a programmer with a canned tune from europe.

You can buy hardware to read and flash calibrations yourself for around $100, and supposedly TunerStudio will work with the map files, but honestly you'd be pioneering the process here. Plus theres a bunch of caveats and stuff about extended features. I'm fairly sure some workshops here have bought into this sort of setup and can tune in-house but given the shit-storm that happens when you start asking questions online about what a shop does I've basically decided to go RSTuner once the locking/unlocking change is made.

Cunt to remove the cover panel? Yes.
    Single-use clips? No.

Mines been removed at least 10 times and still clips back in the exact same cuntingly hard manner.
