Depends on all sorts of things. A 140 roadster I know well sold recently at $125k after quite a while on market around the $145k asking price, but auctions sometimes bring out bigger bucks if there's competition / ego involved.

Read the inspection report. It's a fair way from perfect. I reckon $100K will stop it.

No doubt it'll sell, unless the owner has higher expectations...

What do you think about MK IV's? (just your opinion, not suggesting you buy one)

Been trying to pick a classic Jag that's (relatively) affordable now, but will appreciate in the next 10-20 years.

I much prefer the style of the MK IV over the MK V (the wedding car thing has been done to death) and good ones turn up for $30K every now & then.

I get the feeling that the MK2's & S-Types are too plentiful. The Mark 10 / 420 is just a big boat that you can barely give away, and the MK VII's & MK VIII's don't quite turn heads like the pre-war styled cars...

Mk IVs have been that price for forever. I love them, but I suspect they're like all the pre-war stuff where it's not going to climb in value significantly... I reckon mid 50's to mid-late 60's is the sweet spot for cars that will gain in value - they're infinitely more useable than early stuff, and not as shite as most 70's stuff.

LOL, I just called Shannons to get a quote on insuring a '46 MK IV 3.5L sedan for $40K, it's $189 per year on club/historic rego, or $317 for full rego...

There's this one for sale in Jersey (the British Isle) which looks the business http://www.leriche.com/sales.php?car=388

    No idea what they're asking...

A mate bought this a couple of years ago
    http://www.shannons.com.au/auctions/.../#.U-MepGPEe7c

suffice to say it looks a lot better in the photo's than real life.

I tried to drive it but they are nowhere near big enough for anyone taller than six foot.

Yeah insurance on club/historic rego cars is bugger all.. That is the joy of it. Cheap rego and insurance.. downside is only being able to run them on club events.. Thats why dads XK120 is on full rego, so he can use it as a daily or to go to the shops.

I couldn't shut the door because my knee was getting jammed between the door and the steering wheel.

fknlol, just got the price on this MK IV http://www.leriche.com/sales.php?car=388

    47'750....

Got a heap of photos of the undercarriage, engine bay, all the little details. The car is spotless...

But still... $87K for a MK IV saloon, plus you still have to import it. Makes the $30-$40K ones here look like bargains...

My neighbour has one in bits (he is mid 80's) and it is resprayed in a silver blue metallic. I prefer the mkV only because of reliability donkwise and moss box. : )

The MkIV's are cheaper because (imo) guys my father's age or older had them as hero cars when they first got their licenses in the 60's and couldn't afford an e type or mark 2.

Now that they are the age they are though, they actually want an e type or mark 2. So the guys who are into the earlier cars are all 70 or 80yo and they don't hand out big sums of cash for them (but do tend to restore them).

A good purchse I reckon Jack, just agree that I wouldn't expect any appreciation - soon they will be like a model T ford, ie no-one will want to drive them very far / be able to fix them, and they will become once a year kind of cars for eccentrics.

By appreciate I mean, retain value. I can't imagine these things aren't going to drop any further, so the only way is up, however slowly that might be...

Plus, you get to drive around in a cool old car, you can't drive a term deposit can you...

    EDIT

And from what i've read, then engine/gearbag is the same in the MK IV and MK V, so reliability wouldn't be any better or worse...

Just the handling, and the braking...which don't matter all that much anyhow...

I agree with just about everything you are saying except this bit. Mechanically minded people could get their head around one in no time. Unless you mean parts will not exist. I like them, but they are not a car I lust over of will likely ever own. I often wonder about how the value of 60's cars will go once the current custodians die off. My gut feeling is not much, because for the most part they are so much better than cars from the 40's or before.

MkIVs are not a good car for Australia from what i've heard - they transmit alot of heat through the firewall/tunnel and aren't well ventilated, so driving them in Oz in the summer is not so great... 50's cars were better, but the Mk2 was probably the first properly liveable one...
    Still, i'd fucking love one.

Seems that the MK V's are actually cheaper & more plentiful than the MK IV's at the moment?

MK IV, blue/silver, in good shape : $39K
MK IV, in bits, needs body & interior : $22K

    MK V, black, good shape : $35K
MK V, powder blue, great shape : $34K
    MK V, black/silver, good shape : $27K
    MK V, silver, good shape : $23K

Not to mention the wedding car fleet of 3x sedans & 1x drophead MK V's that's been advertised for yonks...

If the UK/EU/US prices are anything to go by, the cars in Australia (both MK IV and MK V) are really underpriced...

Yep, thanks, that's what I meant. Some owners will be able to fix anything, I was being a bit lazy. Off the shelf parts, wreckers etc will begin to disappear so only those who can re manufacture parts will be able to keep them going, leading to a general devaluation / resistance to increasing valuation.

They are leg openers though, no doubt, chicks dig chrome, wire wheels and big headlamps for some reason.
