    Z32 300zx Nopics chariot

    So after countless hours chasing down a decent shell to transplant the running gear from the written off 300zx we have finally located one worth having.

    Trapsed all the way out to Browns Plains yesterday to inspect a black 2+2 TT manual that I had been following on Gumtree for months. Owner had started out at nearly $4k and steadily dropped it until it reappeared this week at $2k. The photos were awful and made it look like a pig. Had a head gasket issue and the motor was in bits stuffed in some guys back yard. Actual inspection was a pleasant surprise, the car is really straight with no hektik drift damage, has had a recent respray, low kms and has money spent on go fast bits like cooler, proper twin 3" exhaust, boost controller,etc.

    Did some haggling, price agreed on and deposit paid. Will be picked up this weekend to get works started on stripping the spare shell making the new one a runner again.

    fuel flap is the giveaway but they are longer and possibly better at high speed cornering

    Missus had a 2+2 before so it's not really a drama. Besides, can't find a an unfucked 2 seater in the right colours for less than a millionty dollars thanks to closet z32 fanbois who think they are worth actual money.

    Nice. Always liked these, will follow with interest. What are they like to drive, do they stack up well against more modern stuff? I'd imagine they're light by today's standards?

    Haven't driven one for close to ten years now but I remember it being pretty cool. Big wave of torque and a swish cockpit style interior is a nice place to be. 1400kg plus means they aren't super light to throw around but still handle pretty well for what they are. It's a 90's Nissan so plastic but solid enough.

    Fuck all room in the engine bay really. Will just be a tweaked VG30 nugget for now, bigger turbos, fuel, boost and tune/ECU. Enough to run an 11 and that will be it as its the nopics car at the end of the day.

    Boosted VH41 or cammed LSx would be nice but this is a budget build all the way.

    Narp. Gets delivered tomorrow morning. No silly engine conversions, just a clean runner with some extra snort and that's that. Gotta put funds towards wedding and benz resto work next year.

    So now have a car in our possession and works have begun in earne. Car got delivered Sunday morning, wheels got yanked and went on to shifty ' s ute.



    While the wheels were off I gave everything in the wheel well a scrub and an eyeball. The car has new shocks and springs at some stage. Will see how it drives with this stuff before making decisions about coilovers. Could use some more lows though.





    The car also has some bolt on spacers presumably to fill the guards out with the previous wheels. It looks as though one of the nuts has seized and been bashed off st some stage but they can stay for now until road testing time.



    Threw the set of 350z wheels on from the red rig, looks really bloody good I think.




    Also pulled the front bar off to realign and reattach the aftermarket intercooler. Whoever fitted it used horrific thin shitty mild steel brackets that simply rusted through and broke. Just shifted the brackets to pull it all back together and bolted it back on. Will make some proper brackets top and bottom once the car is running. These will also form the basis for some ducting to channel air through the coolers and radiator.

    Then got stuck in to stripping the motor down to pull the heads. What a cunt of a job. Got the radiator and fan, front off the motor, inlet gear and down to the bare heads with exhaust manifolds attached. Could not get at the turbos or manifolds for the life of me so did some research on the 300zx forums. Apparently it's easier to just drop the motor and do everything on a stand. Well fuck, would have been great to know that first. Now I have to put half the shit back on so I can lift the motor out.

    So, decided to shut up shop on the black car for the time being as the red wreck is taking up precious garage space and needs to go. Currently pulling the smashed bits off and getting ready to drop the subframe and drive train. Even more of a prick job because this one has no access at the front from the smash and is covered with spiders and shit underneath from sitting for 4 years.





    Just going to chip away at it every night while the motivation is running because I want this thing done and driving so I can get back into the Benz.

    According to Z32 gurus you can have the engine out in around 2 hours doing it this way:


    Drop exhaust
    Drop tailshaft
    Remove starter motor
    Drop gearbox (or not - a lot of people pull engine and box together - I do). Otherwise, disconnect gearbox (this is harder than you would think and needs a couple of 500mm extender bars joined together
    Remove engine earth's on passenger side rear of engine
    Loosen steering bolts
    Remove intake hoses
    Remove radiator
    Remove belts
    Remove fan
    Disconnect power steering hoses inc HICAS
    Disconnect oil cooler hoses
    Disconnect oil pressure sender cable
    Disconnect heater hoses
    Disconnect fuel lines near filter
    Remove engine mount nuts
    Disconnect all electrical and ancillary lines from top of engine
    Take weight of engine with hoist
    Lower front cross member
    Pull engine forward and up
    Forward and up
    Forward and up
    Done

    I laughed. Hard. I reckon its probably closer to a day job by myself, at least getting it to the stage of having the engine and box ready to come out. Anybody who has a few evenings free feel free to come over and watch my rage build while drinking beer.

    The goal is to have the car back together and driving by 27th October for nopics birthday, lets see how I go.

    I was honestly the same man, but its grown on me this weekend. Its sitting a little high because it hasn't settled after being jacked up. There was a mint set of R35 GTR wheels on one of the local facebook buy, swap and sell fishtanks pages that would have looked rad to the power of sick but they cost more than the car. At the end of the day its the wifes car and she gets the final say so they stay for now.

    Having a look through the 300zx forums reveals that these nugget motors are capable of making some serious grunt. More than a few are well over 400rwkw with relatively minor work so I reckon 400rwhp should be a walk in the park and relatively easy to handle.

    Sounds like you need a plasma cutter, would be faster to cut the car off the engine than remove the engine from the car going by those instructions.

    If you keep the heads on and fuel up to them, they are pretty tough.
