The intention is to use 2 cars per race until the battery technology and efficiency can catch-up to allow for a single car to be used.
At least they'll get bulk discount.

They're barely faster than a good mazda MX5 around a race track, for reference.

I struggle with it. the racing is okay, but I really don't understand why they all have to be on street circuits (and therefore inherently pretty average), I don't get fanboost at all, and I'd prefer the two car system was ditched in preference of either 1: hot swappable batteries, 2: two shorter races, or 3: an endurance race (lets say 2 hours) with multiple car swaps, so race techs can trade off battery capacity/weight and pit stops

I also pretty strongly believe in manufacturer involvement, and that electric motors out of production EVs/hybrids should be used (at least as a base for modification) to try and connect real actual cars to the race cars.

    but fanboost is pretty gay.

you can always hear them when they break and they stop the engine immediately so you can't do any more damage.

Just wait - formula E is a proving ground for the technology

They run them on street circuits so it's not quantifiable how fucking slow they are.

    This.

They might be slow as shit now. But I am pretty confident that one day we will have electrics that go faster than petrol powered cars.

The hanging cars thing sucks tho. They should engineer them to do a quick battery swap.

Yep, and that day will be when there's no more petrol to put in a petrol powered race car.

It's also so they can be run in city centres, with pre-existing public transport infrastructure. It's meant to help the 15 spectators get to the track.
Fraud: The intention is for a control car to get the series going, then allow people to make their cars, but the control car will be available still for those with less budget. Fanboost is a way to get fans involved, because even before it started they knew it would be like watching paint dry.

they should have gone completely the other way and left the rules really open to allow teams to develop the technology. they had a chance to make it like the glory days of f1 when people were coming out with all sorts of wacky things and making HUGE technological leaps. instead we get the motorsports equivalent of a big black dildo

The motors are out of a production car. McLaren P1.

Electric bikes are already doing similar laptimes to World Suspersport 600s and are not far off Moto2.

I had a look at the lap time of these cars at Donnington Park. Apparently they tested on the GP loop and the lap times are similar to a Formula Ford.

The batteries in a Formula E almost weigh as much as my AF2.

Yep. couple of laps at a time - not the 25+ laps of a real race.
Formula Zero at Manx TT - change batteries after each lap. Get fucked.

I read somewhere that the control cars is only to get the series going, after a couple of years they were/are planning on opening up the rules.

Yea they will be switching to their own powertrains as early as next year I think with the chassis to stay common, then switch to a proper formula when the time is right from there.

i might start tuning in at that point then. if it does happen then you can expect to see a very rapid development of electric powertrain technology. not holding my breath though. im sure they'll find a way to fuck it up

Late but oh well, the TT Zero is a one lap dash only at the Isle of Man.
The record lap sits between the sidecar and lightweight records but given it's a standing lap it's very impressive.

I vaguely recall the first one was multiple laps with battery changes...

So, faster than a 600cc sidecar with 2 dudes on it, and slower than a 250GP bike? not bad, but one. fucking. lap.

According to wiki, they're all 1 lap dashes. The lightweights are 650cc road bikes these days.
1 lap is still nearly 20 minutes at an average of 117.336 mph, so it's not a slow lap. (Sidecar record 116.667 mph, Lightweights 119.130 mph. Both flying laps I believe)

Fair enough. I just recall seeing a TTZero bike with swappable batteries.
20 minutes of run time. *yay*
