How much is this HQ LS worth?

I think I am wearing down my neighbour. He has a 2 door 1973 HQ LS 202 auto Monaro. He re sprayed it years ago, but the paint is really crap. It's gold. There is some rust, the inner sill (just in front of the rear tyre) near the rear has a large hole. He keeps it outside under a car cover, and has owned it since it was one year old.
It's all there, and in overall ok condition. It's registered on full rego with original plates.

What's it worth? And what would it cost to restore? I know they are hard questions. Especially the restoration. I know how much paint, etc costs. But if I restore it I would like to make it a GTS rep with a V8 and manual. So need to retrim the seats in GTS cloth, but GTS guards, etc.

I was thinking if swapping the R8.

I would say 20-25k then would prob spend 15-20k restoring. At that price would prob make money back.

Not sure making gts replica is a good idea getting harder to find in original condition and there is a shift to people wanting original look in the old holdens

Could restore it to original LS besides the V8 transplant. And swap back to the 6 cyl when it's time to sell.

I was thinking it was worth closer to $15,000. But i haven't been following the price of these.

Yep on the money with restore to like new and put the 6 aside for later

As these came with sbc as an option it would be the obvious choice you'll need a different diff so could put the whole drivline aside as 6 cylinder has a banjo diff.

I know a bit about HQ's. I owned 14 of them when I was younger. And restored a few as well, but that was 20 years ago, so the price and availability would have changed somewhat.

Agree that the 350 is the way to go. The hardest part will be getting him to part with it. He has two sons that want it, but there not car guys. And if he gives it to one, then the other will get upset. So he would be best selling to me.

I reckon circa 12 - 14, give or take a couple of $k for condition

If you do a replica/driveline conversion/restoration you would be doing it for love, not to save money

It probably works out cheaper to buy one for $50k all done. I just wanted a rough idea what it would be worth, and from there work out the total cost to get it "nice".

Buy one already done. You'll save a fortune in parts and time unless your goal is to actually build one.

You say it's in ok condition overall. Does it really need a full resto?

If the mechanicals and interior are sweet, maybe just fix the body and get it resprayed in it's original colour?

A neat original (or original looking at least) HQ 2 door would make a nice cruiser for someone even if it still has the 202 in it...

I reckon a restored HQ LS might end up being worth more than another GTS replica. Would certainly be more interesting at car shows, simply because when was the last time you saw one?

So long as it isn't San Remo Gold. Then we will know that 2 people were dumb enough to buy one in that colour.

Buy it, fix it, drive it.

LS was the premo model. If you want a pleb GTS, buy a GTS.

How much is this HQ LS worth?

What it's worth depends if the panels are usable, glass is good, chrome/stainless isn't banged up or missing, interior is good. If glass is scratched up, stainless trims are dented, interior is buggered then it really makes a resto expensive. At a glance, two cars can look in similar "restorable" condition but it's all the small bits you have to chase that make one project expensive against another.

A paint job would be all it really needs. The driveline is in good condition, even has a YT head. He does drive it semi regularly.
    The interior is usable too.
I didn't notice any other rust besides the hole on the inner sill. The paint job is very poor, faded and doesn't look like it was done well even when fresh.

Googling for images shows they offered a few colours, the sales brochure that comes up near the top of the list is a metallic green.
Looking at the colours of cars which look original, looks like they may have primarily been metallic ... but yeah, could be that most were silver or gold in the same way most German cars sold now are white or black or grey with varying amounts of metallic.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Yeah there were heaps of HQs that colour...mostly Belmonts and Kingswoods from memory. I'm surprised they offered the LS in that colour.
