    From stage 12

For the second day in a row and the third stage of the rally, Robby Gordon mixed it up with Orlando Terranova on the course. Terranova finished physically right after Gordon, but beat him on time. At the end of the special stage, Terranova blocked Gordon from exiting his car by parking within inches of his door and jumped out of his X-Raid Mini. The Argentine then started yelling and proceeded to write “100 km” on the hood of the Gordini, indicating the distance he claimed to follow Gordon’s dust. “We pulled over at one point but there was no one there,” Gordon explained. “Sometimes these Sentinels can be finicky.” Gordon finished the stage in 13th place, 13 minutes back from Hirvonen. This position is close to where Gordon has run throughout the rally, suggesting that he has more work to do before returning to Dakar. “I’ve got some ideas, and I’m sure I’m not the only one rethinking my program,” Gordon noted. “Peugeot has definitely raised the bar. They can outspend me but they can’t work harder than me.” We tried to reach Terranova for his side of the story, but he was unavailable for comment.

Hahaha Terranova sounds like a hothead. Hopefully they show that on the highlights show this afternoon.

Dammit they didn't show it during the SBS highlights show. Should be a vid around somewhere.

The results of the Dakar Rally in the car category could take “months” to be confirmed, according to sporting director Marc Coma.

Although Peugeot’s Stephane Peterhansel is heading towards a likely 12th career Dakar win, with a lead of 41 minutes overall with just Saturday’s final stage to go, the result will remain provisional due to the rival X-raid team’s protest after the eighth stage.

The controversy surrounds whether or not Peterhansel was permitted to refuel midway through the stage, with Peugeot boss Bruno Famin saying the refuelling point was listed in the roadbook, and X-raid chief Sven Quandt arguing this was only for bikes and quads.

Officials concluded that, because the rules were open to interpretation, that Peterhansel should not be penalised – a decision that has been contested by X-raid, whose appeal could take until March to process, according to Coma.

"Never before in the Dakar do I remember having a situation like this," commented rally director Etienne Lavigne.
    Al-Attiyah resigned to second

Were Peterhansel to be eventually penalised or disqualified, leading X-raid Mini driver Nasser Al-Attiyah would be the man to benefit – but the Qatari insists he is focused on securing second place.

"I will try to gain some time; we'll see what happens,” he told Motorsport.com. “We need to finish second, but we are in a good position for tomorrow.”

Commenting on Friday’s penultimate stage, he added: "It was a good stage for us with many hours of driving.

“It was not easy to open the road because the surface was complicated and decided not to take many risks during the special. It was important not to lose time and were close to Stephane.”

Al-Attiyah also said, with second overall looking safe, he would try to help teammate Mikko Hirvonen move up to third place at the expense of Toyota driver Giniel de Villiers.

“Mikko tried to beat de Villiers, this was something we talked about, so I had to push,” he said.

“It will be difficult to reach the podium for Mikko, but tomorrow is a different day and we’ll see what we can do.”

    Dakar 2016

He's done it!! Congrats to Toby Price for winning the bikes

X Raid Mini really want to win this anyway they can eh? I don't know why they bother, Peterhansel is French so even if the protest succeeds he'll get a token penalty and will still be the winner.

I plan to watch the SBS feed. Can also watch it on sbs on demand. Is a bit delayed from the actual live stage but is decent can create. Keen to hear of any alternatives.

Re the race I will hang my hat on Loeb in the cars and Price on the bike.

Changes to the GPS Waypoint navigation for 2017 will make navigation more difficult.

http://blog.francetvsport.fr/pistes-...u-les-wpc.html : LES WPC (in French)

    google translated:

The Way Points Control (WPC) ... The novelty of the Dakar 2017 and the first of our subjects of conversation, from the first evening. Observer last year, Marc Coma can now "dare" this year. And there is no better position than he (he won the Dakar 2015) to know how the factory stables make use of all the hightech technologies to pre-read and thus predict the Road Book delivered in the evening for The next day.

The Mapmen (cartographers hired by the top-teams) are able to draw hyper precisely the layout of the special. Obviously, surprise and adventure ... there was something wrong ...

To combat the phenomenon, Coma decided to degrade the GPS provided by the organization (the only ones allowed in vehicles). Until last year, the competitors "caught" waypoints in the following way: at 800m (sometimes less) from the compulsory crossing point an arrow appeared on the GPS screen to guide them to the PRECIS point and then second arrow indicated to them for a few moments the direction of the next waypoint.

All this is over! Coma: "Now with the Way Points Control, they will arrive in a virtual circle of 300m radius in the middle of which is the point. The trick is that as soon as they enter the circle, the GPS will emit a beep and validate the point without indicator arrow! You know you've passed close enough to the point to have it but nothing more. The GPS does not tell you if you are left or right of the point and it does not tell you which side is the next point "

In theory, the project is coherent. It will clearly complicate the task of the co-drivers who, I am sure, will come and complain in the ears of Coma every night at the bivouac. I am sure - also - that Coma will hold on. "To find a certain form of adventure, uncertainty, this is the best solution for now," concludes the Clerk of the Course.
    Interesting change.

Generally the day after I think?

Although I had a look this morning and it said you need to login now, so I stopped looking.

That Price Baja vid was pretty cool.

    Stage 2
    http://www.dakar.com/index_DAKus.html#

Toby Price took advantage of the 275-km long special to let his speed do the talking and pick up a very convincing win in San Miguel de Tucuman. With a lead of more than three minutes over his nearest pursuers, the winner in 2016 has a solid advantage in the general standings.

    Focus

While the competitors are now in a country well known to the Dakar as they visit Argentina for the 9th consecutive year, the region of Chaco had not yet been explored by the rally. The participants discovered narrow tracks which kicked up plenty of dust in a setting reminiscent of the African Savannah. Special attention was required concerning the many wild animals and flooded fords. Furthermore, the heat sorely tested the competitors' bodies on this first long stage on the Dakar Dakar 2017.

    The essentials

Toby Price gave a show of force and has not waited long to stamp his authority on the 2017 edition. The Australian won the stage with a lead of more than 3 minutes over his team-mate Matthias Walkner and almost four minutes over Paulo Goncalves. Xavier de Soultrait also put in a solid performance with the day's fourth best time.

    Stat of the day

By winning the Dakar 2016, Toby Price became the first Australian to write his name on the roll of honour, as well as the first non-European.

    Quote of the day

Toby Price: “It was a really, really fast stage but with no navigation. It was a really long day: we had a 274-km special and we're at 38 or 40°C right now, so it's definitely been a hot one on the bike and part of the equipment, but we're here at the end of day two. Another victory there; I can't complain - it's all gone alright. I had a quick look at the time on the thing, but I'm not too sure of the gap. It's only early days so it's just nice and smooth and consistent for the rest of the week and looking forward to pushing hard the second week. It was really crazy. There were a lot of cows. It was really hard coming through all the dust there this morning. A couple of them caught me a bit by surprise. All in all, we've had a good stage and I can't complain and hopefully there's more to come. You're going along this roads that aren't more than a car width's wide and if a cow steps out from behind one of the trees or the bushes it's not going to be too pretty, but you've already got enough to do than think about that when you're on the bike in the middle of the stage. But when you're sitting here right now you just think that was really wild. All is good and I'm ready to go for another day. We have more kangaroos back home than cows, but I'd rather pick on a kangaroo a little bit more than a cow, but all in all, I got through it”.

French but probably one of few long format "live" footage going around.

I was surprised when I watched the stage 1 recap that there was a couple of Toyota utes leading that actually looked like utes rather than some buggy looking things. But Loeb's in the lead already ha.

Also surprised that after being nearly a minute and a half behind on the first stage, Price is nearly 3 minutes ahead after stage 2! Hope he can keep that up.

The truck guys put out some decent quality videos and good to see the rally from their POV which gets lost in the usual wrap up shows so worth a watch.

    Cheers for links.

I find the SBS seems to upload about 8.30pm WA time if you miss the 5.30 broadcast. And its essentially covering something that has happened about 12 hours before it goes to air, so not the most up to date.

Prices pace is impressive as usual on the bike. His ability to pull time out of the field almost at will is impressive. Seems he will try to build a lead and then manage it and only push if he is pushed. Then again it can all go to shit in an instant...which is what make it unmissable viewing.

Barreda gave Price a pretty solid whipping in Stage 3, 20 mins basically right from the first waypoint.
