I think you are quite correct, having been exposed to Group A and seen our home grown Commodore compete against international fields. We were open to a looser homologation version. I felt that it should have been open to all manufacturers from the start and with production engines. Ford should have been obliged to build a V8 Falcon with the engine they wished to run......rather than substituting an SVO engine.

ST might've had a chance if Tony Cochrane didn't come along. In the early '90s, CAMS was very close to dumping Group A altogether, in favour of ST as our touring car ruleset. The team owners, Ch7, Holden and Ford pissed on that idea pretty hard, and took a variation of Group A, and did their own thing. Which over the past 25 years, evolved into what we have today.
I stopped watching AU touring cars at the end of the Group A era, couldn't understand while they were ditching a field with an awesome varity of cars for Holden Commodores and Ford Falcon powered by 5 Litre Pushrod V8s

So I got into the BTCC then thanks alot to the Rat and his to WTCC wins - listening to that Cosworth V6 do its things was simply awesome

Didn't both picking up V8SC again until COTF

None - the current engines sound good, make good power, remain reliable enough to keep them cost effective.. why change.

The thing with the Merc and the Nissan was that they were de-stroked. Much has been said about them difficult to keep on the torque curve in low-speed parts of the track.

Volvo was apparently a bit peaky, and at high revs, it shook all the ancillaries apart.

Yeah, two went back to be displayed in Volvo's museum.

3 were built and raced, one other was partly built, but was finished as a VF for Super2.

I think the rules have been changed about sending cars overseas, because Triple Eight have just sold Whincup's chassis from last year, to Malaysia.

Supercars don't own the chassis anyhow?

They get built by private firms or the teams to suit?

Volvo wanted their cars back because they paid for them I believe.

It w as a legal mess.

GRM, Volvo, and Supercars all claimed IP over various things. Volvo swung a bigger dick, and in the end GRM had to relinquish two complete chassis. The rules at the time, were that a chassis, which Supercars owns the IP to, was not to leave the country, unless it was to be raced at a Supercars event. So provisions were made by Supercars to facillitate it all.

v6 turbo development suspended. Wont be on the table for the foreseeable future. I think this is a good move as a lot of fans were upset about it. Personally I was ok with it, it sounded pretty good and at least other teams were staying V8. Lot of money no doubt potentially wasted.

The whispers i have heard is that the V6 turbo had big reliability issues, Blocks splitting, turbo failing etc, Apparently it was so bad that they wouldn't be able to complete a Bathurst 1000. not the look Holden would of wanted.

Yep itís a Cadillac GT3 engine thatís been used by them in Pirelli World Challenge for a couple of years now. But hasnít been used in any endurance racing anywhere close to a Bathurst race length.

I can see Holden leaving Supercars soon enough. With poor sales there canít be the cash going out to motorsport like in the past when they sold stuff that people wanted.

I'm currently working at the highest performing Holden/HSV dealer in Australia for the last few years and it's a ghost town down in Holden with only Astra & Colorado selling - the ZB drives great but there has been very little in the way or purchases or visits to see the ZB

They should have just killed the name and stopped lying to themselves.

Was interested at looking at some Supercar racing when I heard turbos were coming back... Not really interested now.

Can't see why they don't just give the teams E85 and restrictors that will allow enough airflow for 600lb/ft of torque and leave the engine decision up to them. Would be a shitload more interesting to have an engineering battle as well as driver and strategy.

Oh, and turbo's because of this...

Because of the massive dollars involved - which team has a spare .... 6 figures to develop a random engine?

Most of them buy from external sources as is atm, they don't build in house.

The point is that they wouldn't develop a random engine. They'd take one from the multitude of other endurance racing classes and adapt it to suit.

Cadillac won Sebring 24-hours with the same engine - covered a lot more than 1000kms.

Motorsport teams do not work like that tho, "adapt to suit" is a nice grey area for teams to develop in and spend as much money as they have.

Different engine. The Cadillac Dpi uses a V8.
