    Brad's AE101 Rallycross Corolla

A mate and I figured we would have a crack at the Raleigh RallyX coming up in October. After scouring Gumtree for $500 shitboxes the last few days I found a 1997 Toyota AE101R. Went to check it out this morning and although FWD, it will do the job at $400.

    1997 Toyota Corolla CSi Seca
    14" Alloy Wheels - 185/65/R14
    1.6Ltr 4A-FE with 290,000km
Recently had water pump, belts, radiator, driveshafts replaced and a glovebox full of receipts.

    This is the track

Loaded up for the journey home after pickup

A few beers later and the inside was stripped out and a fire extinguisher mounted.

Will try and get it out to the track in the next few weeks as is and then make adjustments from there.

Bah, was hoping for 600hp 4wd tubeframe car.
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."

I've been weighing everything as it gets stripped (seats, interior plastics and AC Compressor) and it is a 128kg lighter so far, based on what I can find online it should now be around 910kg. I think there is another 10-15kg or so left with removal of the heater box and a few other bits an pieces.

Also cut out the rear muffler and catalytic converter and re-welded up the exhaust, it now as a hilarious side pipe #becauseracecar.

Mudflap extensions, CAMS requirement that the mudflaps must be between 50-100mm above the ground.

Can confirm it limiter bounces nicely. Took it out to the track for the first time today and had an absolute ball. 6000 rpm for just over 40km today.

Put in 36 laps through 9 heats of 4 laps and beat a couple of cars but the clutch lets it down getting off the line.

At lunch time a skud came through and made for an interesting afternoon. The 10 year old rear tyres were not up for the task, the over-steer was horrendous which is an unusual feeling in the FWD on asphalt.

Anyone know much about the gearboxes and suitable clutches for these things? Would be handy to track down a factory LSD gearbag which looks like it might have been an option on the C56 boxes from what I can find online

C56 is the close ratio 5spd. C160 is the same but has 6 gears and is more expensive and difficult to find.
A lightened flywheel and decent clutch would be a good move as well.
C56's are still pretty common and plentiful, LSD ones, not so much.

yeah they are fairly rare. dont buy one without the shafts. try the import wreckers and the usual faceballs toyota pages. iirc trd/quaife used to do lsd's also.

something like a HD exedy would do the job for it. note xAFE's have a 6 bolt flywheel vs 4age that uses 8 bolt flywheel.

Found a few places selling TRD/Quaife LSDs but not at about $1300 considering its a $400 shitter. I Thought maybe a wrecker LSD box could be had for a few hundred bucks.

Will throw just a clutch and tyres at it and go back to the track at the end of October.

Next event isn't until 30th of October so seeing as the C50 gearboxes are pretty cheap and I need to drop the box to change the clutch (will put in a HD Exedy), I'll give the welded option a go. Never played around with FWD cars before so its been a bit of a learning curve to get the diff out.

    Pre-welded

Done a bit more weight reduction since the last outing and the car is tipping the scales at around 890kg

    AC Condenser 4.1 kg
AC Compressor + Lines 6.2 kg
Front Seat Passenger Seat 13.6 kg
    Bonnet Reinforcing 2.4 kg
    misc/trims 21.8 kg
    Rear Seat Tops 12.7 kg
    Rear seat Base 4.7 kg
Airbox and AC Fan 3.2 kg
    Spare Tyre 14.1 kg
    Roof Lining 2.3 kg
    Door Trims 8.9 kg
    Carpet 14.8 kg
    Rear Trims 4.5 kg
    Sheep skins 1.6 kg
    Various Rear Trims 1.7 kg
Floor matts and Trim 2.4 kg
    Drivers Door Speaker 0.8 kg
    Dash AC controls 0.6 kg
    Headunit 1.5 kg
    Airbox Induction box 0.8 kg
    char canister 1.5 kg
    HVAC Box 9.3 kg
    Dash Vents 0.9 kg
    Muffler & Cat 9.5 kg
    Rear Hatch Electrics 4.6 kg
    Total 148.5 kg

Dash going back in, will refit all the dash trim and center console as there isn't much weight in it.

Left the sound deadening in at this stage as I cant be fucked dealing with the sticky shit at the moment.

Hit the deadener with dry-ice. It works a treat and makes the job really simple and clean. Just pack it onto an area, let it go hard (you'll here it crack and pop) then give it a tap with a rubber mallet. It'll lift off in chunks.

All you'll have to do when it's all gone is wipe the residue off with some thinners.

    Update time:

Gearbox glued back together with the welded diff and a new clutch installed.

Wound some camber into the rears by slotting the shocks and then fixing them in place by welding a washer to prevent any movement. Will do the same to the fronts before the racing resumes next year.

Last weekend was Round 4 of the 2016 Raleigh RallyX series. Entered and had a ball. Ended up winning by just over 4 seconds with 15 cars in the field.

My mate in his white corolla finished second.

Heat 1 - Corolla vs BA Falcon

GoPro battery died in heat 4 where I set my PB laptime which is a bit disappointing. Can't wait to get back into the car again.

Monkey wrench racing for toyota stuff.

This model had their own rally series, so there is a little bit of knowlegds in regards parts out there.

    Suspension from MCA would help.

Worked liked a treat, I was worried about popping CV's to start with but they held up all day. The extra acceleration out of the corners was unreal. It takes a completely different driving style to get it turned in though.

Having a bit of trouble engaging 2nd gear at full revs now though, I think the shift linkage cables have stretched a little, will investigate in the next few weeks.

Interesting, I have always thought a locked diff in a fwd would handle like a dog. Maybe not? Will be interesting to see how long the cvs last too. But yeah I absolutely love builds like this, looks like a ton of fun to throw around.

Won't be too much of an issue on dirt.

I know the guys that rally the Excels were blowing diffs if they weren't welded.

Yeah they ran this morning and again tomorrow morning. Going to head down tomorrow to see how they go, from the looks of it they are running the course anti-clockwise.

Next RallyX event is next weekend. I'm hoping the pitlane gets the necessary upgrades to run 4-6 cars simultaneously before next years season.
