VN Group A Race Car (round 2 of the V8's)

I was going to buy a VX that had a 6.0l conversion, cage, etc. But after talking to the V8 guys and weighing up my options, it seemed best to start with something lighter.

Enter 1 very clean VN Group A commodore race car.

    picture upload sites

It is in very good condition, with immaculate paint inside and out. Even inside the boot. I really wanted a VS Supercar as they have the best aero package. But the pickings are slim, and this is cheaper than building a car from scratch.
The motor chopped out its key way and the cam snapped into 3. So the guy decided to sell the car rather than fix the motor.
I plan on installing a 6.0l and 6 speed. And get it onto the track ASAP. And I will upgrade things like suspension and brakes or whatever the car is lacking in as I go.
Eventually I would like to convert it to a VP for the better aero package. They have a wing and splitter.

Keen to see where this goes!

And what do you mean when you call it a Group A car? Is it built to similar spec, or is it a genuine article? (which I thought would be pretty damn hard to find and epic $$$$)

    It's a Group A replica. I don't have $200k for a real one.

    Motherfucker !

I was close to pulling the trigger on Jim's LS1 VN for similar reasons.

Didn't see that one come up for sale, where was it ? Decent cage / suspension / brakes ?

It's all pretty basic - springs and shocks, no coilovers. Cage is very good, not awesome. Brakes are VE like the green car.

It's a good base to start from. It was on a private page on Facebook.

    You are broken haha

Looks like one that had build thread on here somewhere.
an easy fix is get a mate to drive in front of you at 60 then 80 then 100 and mark in on your speedo with some liquid paper.

What happened to selling the green machine first, you have a sickness!.

Keep the car legal for IPRA, once you cut your teeth in VicV8's you can step up to something a little mare competitive. Otherwise, knowing you it will be a sports sedan in no time.

    See you at winton.

I have a wife that must feel sorry for me. She might get sick of buying me cars soon. So I better be careful. 2 x V8 commodore race cars, Hatchback Torana, MX5 race car and our road cars. Need to sell the green car and the hatchback. Things have gotten so bad I have had to start working to pay for car stuff.

I did think about keeping it legal for IPRA, but things like door glass and mechanisms are easily swapped back. Even if it means spend $18.50 to buy new doors.
Once I sell a car, I can get a motor and box.

Now I just need to source a 6.0l motor and 6 speed. As well as clutch, conversion kit, etc.

Is that how you got it with that g/box & vs series 3 hydraulic clutch set up already?

Looks like just needs injected 5l from wreckers or skompa then it's nearly ready.

Like how long route of disconnecting crap for engine was taken.

    Car does look neat.

Yep. Also has a custom ECU to suit Holden V8. Gearbox and ECU will be for sale. I could just throw in a VN-VS motor and it would be going. But I may as well build the car properly. The 6.0l will be the best value for money as far as performance goes. I sold my Hatch, and after paying back nopics I should just scrape enough money together to get the car going.

Pretty sure TK will suggest bang for buck to go for the Holden motor. Worth a query

I plan on keeping this one. It's a nice clean starting point.

The search is on for a motor and box now. I have 3 options I can think of.
1- buy an LS2, conversion bits, gearbox, etc. Expensive option.
2- buy a Holden motor that's already built. But the T5 would need upgrading too. Don't like this idea. Cheapest option?
3- buy Adams conversion kit for LS1, try find a good LS1 and 6 speed. This would be within budget. Only problem all the LS1's are old. I can buy crate L98's, but dont see any crate LS1's.

VN Group A Race Car (round 2 of the V8's)

Question. Are you allowed to swap in a VR-VS front end? They have chapman struts vs the macpherson struts found from VB-VP. Which means better lower ball joint location better camber adjustment and a bolt on bearing/hub with hat style rotors.
