You think it will be quicker than a Honda?

I will be happy to get it on the track and do laps. Beating Honda's isn't my priority. Yet....

Minor update. The UPC (or whatever they are called) rotors are lefts only. So went and bought some good quality rotors. Pick them up today. They will do until I get some 6 piston calipers.
And I Stripped the spare parts car. The entire boot floor is cut out along with the passenger side footwell, as they have been modified for whatever reasons. So OEM floors will be going back in. The doors will be fully lightened to use in VicV8's, and the other doors will be left alone for IPRA.
Car is getting picked up this arvo by my neighbour to take to scrap, even though he owns a commodore wrecking yard. It's a pity, the gearbox was recently replaced as well as the steering rack. Hood lining is unusually good.I even hooked the fuel tank back up so it drives.

I do for IPRA. The car is fine for VicV8's. No point in doing all the fuel system, then taking it all back out to swap boot floors. May as well do it all now.
And the other parts are just there incase I get some panel damage.

Nick started working on my car again. So the car should only be a couple of weeks away from being done. He is doing the suspension brackets, and getting the B.C coilovers to work on the commodore. No easy job...
So once the suspension is all done he can build the exhaust, put the Oem floors back in, fuel cell, etc,etc..

I am getting some much needed seat time sharing a non turbo Silvia at Broadford tomorrow. Should be interesting to compare it to an MX5. I took it for a drive this arvo, it's about as quick as an MX5 with intake and exhaust, diff gears, etc. he has spent some money on 1.5 LSD, brakes, suspension. But it's not a full on track car. I will be happy if it does a High 1:07, or low 1:08. Rain is forecast, so I expect some drifting with the SAU club.

Have you heard about the possible rule changes re 6 speed sequential gearbags and floor mounted pedal boxes?

They are only proposals at this stage and need to be voted on and then submitted to CAMS, so it will probably be at least 12 months before they get into the rule book, if they pass the vote. However worth keeping in mind while the car is being built.

I wouldn't have the funds for a sequential box. But I do have a pedal box that can go in.

So the Silvia wasn't as quick as I was expecting. He tried to build a track car, but wanted a weekend road car. So it's not a good mix of parts. The big heavy 18" wheels will not help. The gearing is way wrong, 3rd takes you half way down the straight, so way too tall geared. It handles similiar to an MX5, but you can feel the extra weight is there. So won't change directions as quick.
I came 7th in RWD class, and the guy that owns the car came 14th. Best lap was a 1:11.5. Even with lightweight 15's, gearing and things, it won't come close to an MX5 with mild track prep. ( I did a 1:07 on my first Broadford day in my old red MX5) He is thinking of buying on MX5. 😈

I get a phone call the other day. Nick tells me he sat down and worked out there is 147 hours in the car so far, and to bring down big wads of cash. 🤕
It runs, but needs a few finishing touches, like an exhaust.
So much for a cheap race car.....

It will get corner weighted then run on the dyno to check the tune. Then I will book in a day at Sandown to test it.

Still needs the brakes done, and the diff. So about another $10k by the time it's sorted.

You will only have another 20kw's or so. Cars would be similiar in weight, so will only pass me slowly.

I got a phone call today, the car is finished at Nicks shop for now. So all I need to do is bring a wad of cash and the car trailer and bring it home. There are a couple of small jobs I need to do, plus I want to run it up on a dyno just to make sure it's all good, and check the tune. Then it's off to Sandown with Nick to do a shake down run.

Haven't booked Sandown yet, but I will soon. Will let you know. I am not expecting the car to be awesome, but I really hope it's better than my expectations. It's only running the stock 3.08 diff with a locked centre and VX SS wheels with R specs. The brakes are just big heavy UPC fronts and stock rears. If I spent this much on an MX5 it would be as quick as Liam's Sports Sedan. I will be disappointed, but not surprised if this car is not as fast as my $16k MX5. But all the work carried out is impressive, and will give me a good chance of having a reliable car. At Sandown it should be faster than the MX5, but let's see what happens at a proper drivers track - Phillip Island.

Time to book Sandown.. Went down to the dyno and had the tune checked, lucky I did. The car had some minor issues that he quickly sorted like the oxygen sensors being plugged in on the opposite sides. But it ran well, and has good A/F ratios now. With the baby HSV road cam it runs out if puff at 5550rpm and made 293.2rwkw's.

Worked out a good way to park when on the street and no room to reverse off.

Time to charge all the electronic bits for data and video as it gets to stretch its legs at Sandown tomorrow morning. I am not overly excited about it as the car isn't finished yet. Maybe it's also because I haven't had a chance to bond with the car. I bought it months ago, dropped it off, helped put the motor and box in, and then picked it up half a year or so later. The car looks exactly the same as when I bought it, and even had the old owners name on it until last week.
I will take it easy on the brakes and just try and get comfortable driving it. I hope by the end of the year to have a very competitive car. At the end of the day, if you tip enough money into anything you would hope for a decent car.
For now let's see what it can do. If you know how I drive, you will know I will make the most of what I got. I won't be pushing it too hard at Sandown, as the real race event is next weekend at Philip Island.

I was at Sandown last weekend, glad I did because a year off the track equals some pretty average driving. Enjoy the day and creep up on the speed, cols Sandown doesn't offer much grip.
