    Big gamble for a RBR driver to jump ship;
They are going to be in a quality car next year with the engine sorted.

Might be better, might be worse. But it would be a huge effort and call if on contract.

The obvious choices will be Wehrlein or Bottas.

He has partnered with Lewis previously and done well.

I'd expect Mercedes to get some young blood into the team, and I'd expect that they could pull strings with just about any of the teams using Merc. engines to ease contract difficulties. Wehrlein Is contracted to Mercedes, Bottas is managed by Toto Wolff .....

Not really a secret though is it, that next year Merc's dominate lead is likely to come to an end. New aero regs opens it to many especially RBR and with the development tokens gone the engine lead is likely to disappear pretty quick. So when he doesn't just have to beat his team mate but several other drivers his chance of getting another WDC are very slim so why not go out on top? Look at the massive strides McLaren-Honda has made under the token system, seems everyone in the field seems impressed by the turn around they've made so I suspect there are a few worried people in the other teams about what McLaren could show up with next year. There is no doubt they can put together a good car as JB said the type of failure they had in Abu Dhabi never happens to them as opposed to several other teams having experienced structural failures this year. The issue McLaren has is whether the dropping of Ron is going to unsettle the development of next years car.

Am I the only one who thought Rosberg was retired all the time?

I was about to say he's too young, but he turns 18 4 days before the start of the season. Bigger issue would be that he doesn't have the prerequisites for a super licence.

As if Merc didnt know until he announced it and this is all really a mad scramble. They would have known at least a while ago... and totally coincidentally Wehrlein both didnt get the contract he wanted and was testing for Merc with Lewis shortly after Abu Dhabi.

Wehrlein will be driving for merc 100%

Nico said he only told the team Monday.

But yeah Pascal is the logical move.

While slotting Wehrlein in makes sense being part of the Merc programme so far I've not seen anything that suggests he is worthy of the seat. He wasn't that much faster than Hariyanto in qualifying and Ocon was pretty much 50/50 in results against him despite joining the team mid year.

Naturally they'll be privy to a whole bunch more data with his simulator time but from the outside I don't think he is a 100% certainty.

Problem is by December contracts are fairly tightly locked in for most people.

This would be an epic story if he had dropped it in June/July

I agree but do they really need two WDC contenders again?

Im sure Wehrlein is capable enough. He was pretty impressive in his first couple races.

conveniently for hamilton this has completely diverted attention away from the fact he was supposed to be getting reamed by his bosses this week

i assume it will be quietly forgotten about now

Bend over backwards to manipulate him into a WDC and then he just bails!

Latest comments were that the team had realised he wasn't acting like the anti christ in hindsight.

I wonder if Jenson may be tempted to jump from his ambassador role at Mclaren. With all the changes there he might have an out for the contract or he may have stuck a cheeky clause in allowing him to drive for another team for a year if a seat came up????

Living off the assumption Mercedes would want him.

Yes a big assumption, but cheaper to buy out his contract than a driver with a seat for next year, especially for a one year fill in deal whilst they sort out a longer term driver.
