Who isn't tempted to leave their current seat for a top seat and a crack at the championship?

Maldonado to make a comeback and win the 2017 WDC

This scenario feels like when Senna left Honda to go to Williams that was dominating with the Active suspension only to have it banned and the next years car wasn't the best.

Yup, Dan would be mad to goto merc with the changes next year likely to be in Red Bulls favour.

0.000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance Dan was going to Merc

How did you come to this conclusion?
Yes he is contracted to Red Bull, but we've seen in the past that this is not a huge barrier.

I cant see that Merc seat being filled by anyone other than a currently contracted driver TBH. All the good rookies have been taken, and TBH I don't think Merc would fancy a rookie in that seat.

Putting Button in their for a year while Merc considers drivers who are free in 2018 might also be an option???

Yeah but Mercedes isn't a one trick pony though? I still reckon Merc will be the dominant team next year.

Ric has driven a version of next years car so will have some idea if it's a doge.

Are they lifting the fuel flow limits to increase HP for teams or what other measures?

merc should still be up near the pointy end but so should red bull. it would be a sideways step and burn bridges at RB, and tbh i reckon there are others higher on merc's shopping list anyway

Because it is December and he has already begun prepping for 17 with RBR - the 2nd best team this year, with Newey back in the game... please

Button, No. He didn't quit because Macca was shit, he quit because after 17 years he doesn't want to go through the grind again. A merc might change that feeling but as a Merc boss it's not what you want to hear from a guy you are considering?

Overall fuel allowance is up, flow isn't I don't think

Hopefully that eliminates some of the 'turn the engine down'. It depends on whether everyone is able to go at full noise the whole race without running out of fuel. I.E. Is the only reason they turn the engines down currently is to save them mechanically.

to be brutally honest, it will make fuck all difference. in 2014 there were a lot of tracks which were marginal, and the mclarens are still overly thirsty, but the rest of the field has been on top of the fuel consumption for a while now apart from one or two tracks which are on the edge. they will always run the bare minimum of fuel to get them through a race, just as they always have.

if they want people to go maximum attack then they need to make the regs promote that type of driving. refuelling and tyres which dont exhibit high rates of thermal degradation is what is required to get a driving style like that again

As above, none neck the fuel they don't need to. The v6 is phenomenally good on fuel, turning them down allows reserves as required and keeps them good for more races.

Engine pools going down in future only equals less HP for longer engine life.

They are also making such progress that 1000hp with less fuel is going to happen as is.

    FIA publishes 2017 entry list
    http://www.formula1.com/en/latest/he...ntry-list.html

So still 4 seats to be confirmed.... but more interestingly, if a driver is on this list, does that mean hes locked in? Every speculated possibility for Merc driver is listed as expected (ie. not with Merc), except for Wehrlein.

hp figure is definitely combined. but yes they are already close to 1k, the development in power output has been nuts considering they can't inject any more fuel. it's all efficiency gains.

Still pretty damn impressive to be pushing 200 maybe higher HP out of an electric recovery system, even more 800hp out of a baby turbo that runs off a sniff of fuel.

for reference the old turbos used to drink like fish

They're pushing 50% thermal efficiency these days aren't they?
