    2festi - B6T in a WB Festiva

so 4 years ago after a sat arvo karting, over beers talk turned to a motorkhana the next day.
none of us had a suitable car, and a joke was made to buy something off gumtree.
which quickly turned into a purchase, sight unseen (no photo's even) of a ford festiva.

picked it up bright and early sunday am (bloke was in town clubbing sat night and deal was done via sms) for $200.
drove it the the event, 4 of us raced it, won trophies, and had a ball.

the car lasted around 15 months, had over 15 drivers through it, and won over 15 trophies (drive it like it's stolen)
    lost count...

we starved the motor of oil out at a track day at mallalalalaalalalallaa doing hot laps to see who could punt it around the track fastest, and the water pump was fucked, so the usual process was off to the wreckers after stripping out the good bits (battery and extinguisher), and buy another disposable racecar off gumtree.

however, a bit of love had developed, and instead, she sat in a mates front yard for a bit...

said mate had heard the mazda b series motors were interchangeable with the gearboxes, and a B6T from a capri was sourced from gumtree for $300.
(chassis by kia, motor by mazda, ecu by mitsubishi, and badge by ford, cause that's how things were done in the 90's)

well she dropped straight in with minimal mods, in fact, it bolted straight into the 1.3 festi using the top engine mount from a 1.5 festi.
conversion was done in the front yard, on the dirt.

    farken factory!!!

it then took us a year to do the wiring (yeah slack), and got an ecu (well, a microtech) off here (cheers Dan!) and got it running.
    pod filter
    intercooler
straight thru exhaust to side pipe
ran with the tune on the microtech

    dyno'd at 115kwatw with 221nm

    mental fun.
took a mate (with a 400+kwatw wheels skyrice) for a drive the other day (before the clutch upgrade, so I was feathering the throttle trying to get power down) - his words: "it's like it's constantly trying to kill you"
    mission accomplished.

we used the 1.3 (e series box) and got the heaviest duty clutch we could find (400kg), but the clutch was slipping for event #1 (Mt Alma)
ran with 2nd hand (free) 888's

note at 1.10 a boost hose blew on that run, hence why it looks so shit/slow

did nothing else until a club day at collingrove hillclimb, and it was pissing down, so clutch slippage was not a problem - just wheelspin.

so for Willunga hillclimb (this weekend just gone), we knew we had to upgrade something to get power down.

so gumtree to the rescue again.
picked up a 1.5 big block WFfesti for $165

drove it home (and therefore knew everything works)
stripped out: gearbox, flywheel, 2 engine mounts, crossmember, driveshafts, gearbox selector rod and starter motor.
stripped off bonus parts: power steering rack (3 turns lock to lock instead of 4), front KDM spec clear indicators, 2 x hatch gas struts (yay, hatch stays up now!!), and roof racks of love.
rang around and got the car collected and $60 back.
got hold of a 800kg race spec clutch (ceramic solid centre etc)

result: no more clutch slippage, just *major* wheel spin and torque steer hahahahahaha.

we also fit a set of second hand excel coilovers in the front, haven't managed to do the back yet.
and found a couple of (free) second hand AO50's for the front (mediums)

ran at willunga and finished 50th o/r (130 competitors and around 110 finishers), 2nd in class (2 to 4l modified), beaten by a skyrice, and 2nd fwd (beaten by a damn integra type r)

    upgrade list:
lsd (fuck it needs an lsd - the wheelspin everytime a wheel unloaded - fuck me)
    rear coilovers
    a tune
    decent rubber
a seat and harness I guess
    a cage...

total cost to date: just on $1k

photo from Mt Alma earlier in the year

Find a Ford Crapi Turbo and flog the G series trans and driveshafts out of it, or buy the whole Crapi if you want a spare engine.

The g series is the strongest trans that your engine will bolt up to. The driver's side driveshaft is 2 piece with a support bearing that bolts to the back of the block, this reduces torque steer a bit. Mazdaspeed make an LSD that will fit the G gearbag but they are expensive and probably not worth it. Some people swear by locked diffs in FWD cars but I have never tried it.

cheers all, half the fun is putting smiles on other people's faces.

mondo2000 - thanks for the tips, gratefully received.
we did investigate a g series, but couldn't find anything cheap, so the f series (with bonus goodies) for $105 outlay it was.
but if anyone hears of a cheap turbo capri, let me know...

for you festiva nuts (tumble_weeds.gif) out there, the wd festi 1.5 runs a 190mm clutch and the wf runs a 200mm clutch with a slightly larger fly. wtf?
and xtreme make a race spec clutch for the 1.5 wf but not the 1.5 wd.
    of course they do.

did think about a cig locker but something tells me that will be a bad bad thing in a fwd.
    especially on tarmac.

    anyone ever tried it?
damit. idea. we shoulda bolted the 1.3 box back in the wf after hitting it with a welder and fucking tried it!! ffs.

    run 2.

Yes, go for a locked diff. Great on tarmac as long as you commit to the corners.

How has this no r been done before in a street car? (That I've seen)
Or has it been done and death resulted?

I know your pain well, I turbo'd an E5 motor in a GB Meteor. Clutches, pistons, broken second gear.

This still looks like great cheap fun.

All over this like white on rice. I heard about the mazda/ford/kia parts bin swapping years ago and have harboured plans to do the same conversion in my grandmothers kia rio wagon when she eventually passes it on.

Like most of my stupid conversion ideas it (hopefully) won't happen.

Yep, welded is great for FWD on tarmac or autocross.
Haven't tried it for motorkhana as I think it would be a PITA.

Fabulous. Did many miles in a 121 Bubble and then a 1.3 Festiva 2 door back in the day.

Have you had any serious killdeath moments yet? Ex end over end flipped hers after the rear end went light going over a crest and did some pretty major bone breakage in her chest etc.

I had a 1.5 KE laser GL hatch. Could not kill it.

Rthirty1 - yes, can't beat a disposable racecar for sheer fun factor imho

    Paddington - I've had a couple of 121's - great little cars...

this one cost $350 - I overpaid haha, but she won more than her fair share of trophies

so far, touch wood, no killdeath moments, but now that 2festi is, errr, a bit quicker, I would like a cage in order to avoid such

little bro had a kf laser years ago, went through clutches and brakes like you wouldn't believe, but yeah, pretty indestructable
