    Budget CB250 nighthawk cafe/brat project

My late father in law stopped riding this bike about 5 years ago after laying it down at low speed, and decided he was getting to old to ride anymore. After sitting in the shed for a few years, he gave it to me. The bike didnt run, battery was flat and had (still does) surface rust all over anything shiny...this makes it perfect to chop up without feeling bad if i fuck it up. the bike was destined for a $500 lawn sale otherwise.

Cb250 nighthawk. forget which year, theyre all the same anyway. Ruthlessly boring learner bikes. I have my open R's...but no cash, so you ride what you got. this is all about making it as cool as I can, while spending as little as i can.

after mucking around a bit, i was fairly sure the bike didnt run due to a stuck needle & seat, as it would breifly fire up if i sprayed start ya bastard into the carb. ordered a kit, and did my first carb rebuild. bike is a goer. of course, in PF style, that means its time to put it under a tarp for a year.

I dug it out yesterday as i have been getting the itch to ride again lately, and started making plans. basically end goal is something like this, but QLD roadworthy (ish)...until rego is obtained of course.

anyway here is the stock bike. the toyota echo of bikes. the cb250 nighthawk.

started by ripping off all the superfluous shit..

and then cut the arse off it, along with some no longer needed brackets. also chopped the seat down to 495mm (qld single seat rego means no longer than 500mm). also starting marking cut lines on the seat, as i plan to use as much of the original one as i can.

flipped the handle bars and threw the seat back on to see how it looks. looks better already, but im not sold on the bars. too low for me, and puts my knees in my chest.
will have to splash the $37 for a pair of clubmans on ebay.

next up is to shape the seat, trim the front fender and do something about the tank. im not sold on using it, but i havent got the budget to use anything else. the part i have the most about is where it dips below the frame, to match up with the farings. im thinking on caving the section in with a hammer, trimming it off and welding it up. any ideas?

Couldn't backdate to a 70's CB tank cheaply? Can't imagine they would be uncommon or valuable, and would suit a heap better having a flat line across the base.

A mate of mine had the same drama with a CB750 of similar era he is doing, ended up with a Kawasaki tank of some sort he picked up for $50 that looks much better and just needed some mounts welded to it's base.

The shape of the rest of the tank kinda looks at odds with what you're going for to my eye.

Hot tip, hit up swap meets not eBay. EBay sellers hope their junk is worth a fortune, swap meets are packed with people trying to exchange junk for cash to buy the bits they actually need and are generally happy to haggle. I seem to get stuff for about half of going eBay rates.

swap meets seem to be pretty scarce up here, so its pretty much gumtree or ebay for me. but point noted.

Seriously, someone from Pf will be able to collect and post for a few bucks, also ask the seller if they're willing to post. Half the time they just couldn't be bothered filling in that bit of the form.
